6ft 12yo Dd ! School threatening detention as I can’t find trousers or skirt long enough!

Ok here goes!
Dd is 6 foot tall in flat shoes. Last year I got her long trousers ladies size 10 and no problem. She had slim leg trousers. I always ensure correct uniform !
This year was hell! 35 inch legs now so even tall in most shops are 34” She needs 36 “ with shoes/ growing room. I cannot find any and eventually had to settle for Next trousers with horizontal zips covered by her jumper.
I emailed School to explain I have looked in
Matalan
Asda
Tesco
Sainsbury’s
New look
River Island
Dorothy Perkins
Wallis
Marks and Spencer
H and M
TK MAC
Debenhams
Beales
Top Shop
Primark
and online at ASOS and long tall Sally . We made several online orders for long trousers from Next and New Look, also tried skirts in long. All too short. Eventually we found what were described as black trousers in size 10 xl so got them.

I emailed School to explain the situation on her first day back with no response.

Fast forward 4 weeks and I email School to discuss concerns regarding what I felt may be back chatting teachers. I advised if she was being cheeky there would be consequences. Teacher was meant to investigate.

Since last week all the teacher emails about is her trousers, rather than my original question.

I said the only other trousers that are plain black and age appropriate are in Long Tall Sally and £60 per pair! She needs 3 pairs so £180! I explained I am not paying that for 3 pairs of trousers. The head of year then sends me links to ASOS which I already trawled through , none suitable and also to long tall Sally sale which has jeggings, faux leather, suede, baggy trousers ( would get teased by peers) .

She is trying to insist we buy new trousers. WWYD?
🙄

Insist the school pays for them if it's such a problem

RitaFairclough · 11/10/2018 21:48

I only have boys so not sure about girls clothes but could she try teenage boy trousers? They do skinny fit most places I think if that helps style-wise, and would probably cater for taller kids.

MarklahMarklah · 11/10/2018 21:51

Can you go in and show them the measurements against your daughter? I get that schools have uniform policies but they shouldn't be so rigid that they prevent people from complying.
Also, detention for clothing violations to me seems ridiculous. If people can't do whatever it is without being distracted by someone else's garb, then I'd suggest that they are the ones who need discipline.

I get a bit annoyed by this crap.

Teen girls have super short skirts but DD 'ankle grazer' trousers are unsuitable because they (gasp) show a cm of ankle. The boys just won't be able to contain themselves!!

Seriously I'd ignore and say she's not doing detention

I'm shocked they sent you links!

Lwmommy · 11/10/2018 21:54

The school are being ridiculous. As an aside Gap have a tall range which is 37" leg length.

PerspicaciaTick · 11/10/2018 21:56

Could you get the 34" ones and then either them them yourself or find a seamstress to make the change. It might eek you out an extra inch.

SimplyPut · 11/10/2018 21:56

School need to compromise!
This looks like a decent skirt for school...

could she try teenage boy trousers

From experience with a boy with the length and proportions of a stick of bamboo, the waist / leg length / waist:hip ratio will be a problem.

At anything less than around 32" waist, 36" inside leg trousers for men are very hard to find (having had to search for 26" / 36" and then 28" / 36" I know). Girls have hips and definite waists, so anything long enough with a slim enough waist will be too tight on the hips, anything long enough in the legs will be HUGE on the waist.

Fatted · 11/10/2018 21:57

Why don't you just buy men's trousers for her?

Why did you even email about the trousers in the first place?

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/10/2018 21:58

They want then they pay for them. They need to stop body shaming your dd

Lucked · 11/10/2018 21:58

Surely skirts are easier as midi length will still be at least knee length. What colour does she need?

cantkeepawayforever · 11/10/2018 22:00

I did also have the 'but he's not wearing the correct trousers' / 'the correct trousers aren't made in his sizer'/ 'they're made in a wide range of sizes'/ 'yes, a wide range but not wide enough to cater for a genuine outlier' conversation with school.

It never got to the stage of DS having to try on clown trousers in the SLT member's office, as common sense kicked in....

ChoudeBruxelles · 11/10/2018 22:02

Fatted Do you wear means clothes? There’s a reason why shops make clothes for different genders. It’s because we’re different shapes

Aventurine · 11/10/2018 22:02

Are they allowed skirts or does she not want to wear a skirt?

AnxiousElephant · 11/10/2018 22:03

I looked at all the links and nothing different. We had already ordered one skirt that looked suitable but it was too short and her hips are small so size ten waist but really big on hips 😞

Boys unfortunately don’t accommodate the girls bottom as we tried that too! Thighs too skinny for waist too.

I emailed saying if they find the trousers I will purchase them from LTS but I will not pay.
I will tell dd not to attend any detention ( regarding trousers!) and have told School I will make a formal complaint to OFSTED.

I could understand if I was a parent who doesn’t engage with school but I clearly do!! Suffice to say I won’t be now!

Why does she need 3 pairs of trousers?

Buy 1 of the pairs that match uniform rules for her to wear most days. If they can’t be washed and dried overnight when necessary then she could wear a current pair as a backup.

MadameButterface · 11/10/2018 22:05

This uniform madness drives me batty

As if girls of this age with atypical body proportions need more attention drawing to it Angry

Schools should allow leeway where it is very very obvious that the child cannot easily buy clothes which comply to the letter at a reasonable price

A friend of mine had to resort to having her 15 yo dd’s trousers tailor made. She was tall and slim like your dd. The only high street trousers she could find that fitted her lengthwise and stayed up on the waist fell foul of the school’s ‘no skinny fit jeans’ rules. Truly truly ridiculous.

Somerville · 11/10/2018 22:09

Hope you’re joking. Please keep engaging with your child’s school, because if you don’t your child won’t, and that will end up hurting her much more than the school.

My daughter has friends who are over 6 foot. They all wear skirts and tights to school because trousers are tricky.

MadameButterface · 11/10/2018 22:11

cost of school uniforms has been debated in parliament very recently, i only know this as my mp was involved and asked on her social media for submissions from constituents regarding how they had been affected. It might be worth looking through that link and seeing if your mp was involved, and contacting them.

Aventurine · 11/10/2018 22:12

What waist size and length skirt does she need? School uniform shops sell skirts in different waist sizes and lengths so i could see if they have one suitable.

Aventurine · 11/10/2018 22:16

The longest length here is 22 inch but comes in different waist sizes

Think I've seen longer ones. Will check

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 11/10/2018 22:17

Long Tall Sally! I get all my leggings from there and they're a little long on me, I'm 5"10.

elephantoverthehill · 11/10/2018 22:18

From which outlets does your Dd buy her every day clothes from, surely that might be a starting point?

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 11/10/2018 22:19

Oops sorry missed that in the list. They're stock changes fairly regularly though so I'd keep an eye on it for future.
