6ft 12yo Dd ! School threatening detention as I can’t find trousers or skirt long enough!

Ok here goes!
Dd is 6 foot tall in flat shoes. Last year I got her long trousers ladies size 10 and no problem. She had slim leg trousers. I always ensure correct uniform !
This year was hell! 35 inch legs now so even tall in most shops are 34” She needs 36 “ with shoes/ growing room. I cannot find any and eventually had to settle for Next trousers with horizontal zips covered by her jumper.
I emailed School to explain I have looked in
Matalan
Asda
Tesco
Sainsbury’s
New look
River Island
Dorothy Perkins
Wallis
Marks and Spencer
H and M
TK MAC
Debenhams
Beales
Top Shop
Primark
and online at ASOS and long tall Sally . We made several online orders for long trousers from Next and New Look, also tried skirts in long. All too short. Eventually we found what were described as black trousers in size 10 xl so got them.

I emailed School to explain the situation on her first day back with no response.

Fast forward 4 weeks and I email School to discuss concerns regarding what I felt may be back chatting teachers. I advised if she was being cheeky there would be consequences. Teacher was meant to investigate.

Since last week all the teacher emails about is her trousers, rather than my original question.

I said the only other trousers that are plain black and age appropriate are in Long Tall Sally and £60 per pair! She needs 3 pairs so £180! I explained I am not paying that for 3 pairs of trousers. The head of year then sends me links to ASOS which I already trawled through , none suitable and also to long tall Sally sale which has jeggings, faux leather, suede, baggy trousers ( would get teased by peers) .

She is trying to insist we buy new trousers. WWYD?
🙄

To answer a few questions

I emailed about the trousers because I knew they had zips and dd May be spoken to about them. So I emailed to say I know and this is why! To avoid her getting embarrassed!
They didn’t say a thing until my latest question. Dd was saying things she doing/ saying in class which I felt may be disruptive/ cheeky. If this was the case I wanted to deal with it. They still haven’t addressed these concerns! 😡

She hates the knee length pencil skirts as they are restrictive walking/ silly boys trying to look up them.

She wants to wear similar to her friends who all wear skinny leg trousers.

Don’t get me started on non uniform day. They sent her to the office ( it was very hot so went in denim normal cut shorts but short as length issue again! A short but not cropped top with sleee ( short sleeve) Told to sit facing the wall as “not wearing enough clothes!” 😡

The trutex uniform site has trousers in short/medium/long. I don't know if the long would be any good for your DD? Good luck. My daughter is 5'10" so I know it can be difficult.

AnxiousElephant · 11/10/2018 22:24

Aventurine she is 6ft tall! Her legs are 35” and shoes on 36” she is ladies size 10 28” waist!

No school uniform shops cater for 6 foot tall girls! Age 12 and more growing to do!

If you sign up for LTS emails, they bombard you with discount codes. Or check out the LTS Buy/Sell/Trade group, there is an ongoing thread of discount codes on there.

Aventurine · 11/10/2018 22:27

Ok. I was off googling trying to find something longer. I was trying to help! Not sure why you have got cross about it.

AnxiousElephant · 11/10/2018 22:28

Last year at 5’10 the long we’re fine and we bought correct trousers. Long are now too short so need extra long and only next and Asos do reasonably priced. Asos ones are out of stock in size 10 xl, next ones are ones she has but not suitable.
Only other place is long tall Sally at £60 per pair !

How about learning to do dressmaking with your Dd? She may be very grateful to have the skill in the future.

AnxiousElephant · 11/10/2018 22:34

Sorry Aventurine I didn’t mean to come across as cross.
My post isn’t really about how to find uniform as I have googled and googled. More how to handle it with school.
I.e what would you do if you had looked everywhere, done what you can to get as close as possible. Then had school going on about it , had two teachers staring and pointing at her but not even speaking to her directly to acknowledge her .

Not cross with you! Only school! 😞

Can you un hem? Would that give you the extra inch ish you need? Then re hem as less as you can.

bershetmelon · 11/10/2018 22:34

Op I'm over 6ft and it's a nightmare to find trousers that fit they're either all too short in the leg or too big in the waist, apparently no one can be a size 10 and require a 35in inside leg! Consequently I live in leggings a large amount of the time.

It was even worse when I was at school as tall ranges for adults were few and far between let alone for kids.

I don't think you're being unreasonable at all. Your dd is not of average height for her age or even that of a grown adult woman. I'm all for rules but these are, imo, extenuating circumstances and unless they are willing to contribute then they shouldn't force you to purchase the LTS trousers and what's more there are many families out there that simply wouldn't be able to afford the £60 anyway.

elephantoverthehill · 11/10/2018 22:36

Also look at American websites, they seem to cater brilliantly for the most tiny premature babies to the tallest most skinny boys, however I have not had reason to look for tall girls.

AnxiousElephant · 11/10/2018 22:37

I would love to learn dressmaking but there is nowhere local to do it. I also work full time, have another dd and mums taxi service ongoing as no public transport.

Aventurine · 11/10/2018 22:39

I don't know what I'd do in your position. Never had to buy school trousers as although they are allowed they all wear the regulation skirt as short as possible. They are allowed it up to mid thigh which i think is quite short so your dd would probably be fine with the longest one at their school. That's no help to you at your dc's school though

AnxiousElephant · 11/10/2018 22:41

Bershetmelon that’s summed up exactly the issue and also why out of principle I will not pay £180 for 3 pairs ( working on wash one dry one wear one) .having already spent £31 per pair which is still well above most 12 year olds clothes in price.

OP posts:
Unicornandbows · 11/10/2018 22:43

Could you perhaps ask local tailors to increase trousers by a few inches??

I think your school is being very unreasonable and I would escalate this further.

mnahmnah · 11/10/2018 22:43

Are the zips on the pair you have bought, the issue with school? If so, could you remove the zips and sew the space up so they look plain black?

AnxiousElephant · 11/10/2018 22:44

Reaa I will have a look but I think it’s quite a small hem anyway x

elephantoverthehill · 11/10/2018 22:44

Anxious us elephants should stick together in our herd. If you live in a village, I am assuming this, as mums taxi service ongoing as no public transport there will be someone nifty with a sewing machine who can help your Dd learn a valuable skill. Stick a card in the PO window.

BikeRunSki · 11/10/2018 22:45

Ec36 gives 30% off and free delivery from LTS.

Aventurine · 11/10/2018 22:45

Good idea, or ask a tailor to remove the zips

AnxiousElephant · 11/10/2018 22:48

Mnahmnah I have thought about doing that with zips. Originally they were trying to say they were jeans but they aren’t . I sent them a pic of invoice clearly showing they are trousers. Got an email back saying just they are unsuitable.

Skittlesandbeer · 11/10/2018 22:50

You need to buy boys trousers in a bigger size and get them tailored back to her size at the top. Or make friends with a seamstress/tailor and have them make pants from scratch (with added length for growth). You’ve got quite a few years of school pants ahead, so you can likely do a deal. Frankly, I can’t see tailoring being more expensive, or more Raff than you are currently putting yourself through. Marching endlessly up & down the high street won’t help this problem, nor will email battles with teachers.

In the time you’ve spent hand-wringing on this problem, you could probably have taught yourself to make the pants for her. Or earned the money for a Saville Row pair or two!

Check Etsy for dressmakers who might custom make to measurements you send, could be cheaper than high street tailors. Or advertise in your local area. There’ll be a granny or grandad sat in their lounge watching their sewing-machine rust away who’d probably love to do it!
