If your child has brown eyes, were they brown at birth?

Or, if they changed from blue to brown, when did this happen?

DD is three months old and has blue eyes, like me. Her dad has brown eyes, so I wonder if DD's will turn brown.

I've seen other threads about eye colour changes and when they happened, but I got confused as some people were talking about more subtle changes, such as a change from blue to grey (which I think tends to happen later?)

Definitely brown within a few days. I have blue eyes and dh has brown: we have one blue-eyed, blond child and one brown-eyed, olive-skinned.

The blue-eyed one is now 18 and as blue-eyed as he ever was. He'd be perfect casting for a Viking warrior in an old-fashioned film; dd otoh would do nicely as a Spanish princess.

DS's eyes were blue at birth, started to get brown bits around the pupil about 6 months, gradually got darker and were almost fully brown about 2. I think that is relatively late though.

mindutopia · 06/06/2018 12:23

They’re always blue at birth. Dd’s turned to brown around or a bit after 6 months. Both of ours are brown. Ds is 3 months and they are still blue, but will surely turn brown eventually. I would think you would know for sure by a year.

DS was born with blue eyes (identical to mine), the changed gradually and at 18 months they were greeny/hazel!

Sagegreen · 06/06/2018 12:27

My brown eyed child had brown (almost black) eyes at birth. As someone said, they only go from blue to brown but not brown to blue. However they can get flecks etc in as another child (blue) has.

evilharpy · 06/06/2018 12:27

Very dark blue at birth I think but it was hard to tell. They were very obviously brown within a week. She has very dark brown eyes. My eyes are blue and her dad's are sort of hazel.

Mrsfrumble · 06/06/2018 12:29

DD's eyes changed from blue to brown at about 9 months. It seemed to happen quite quickly, over a couple of weeks.

DS's eyes changed from blue to green when he was 3/4, and that was very gradual. His eyes were a very pure shade of blue at birth, whereas DD's were darker and sort of "murkier", so I wasn't surprised when her's changed but I was surprised by DS!

blacklister · 06/06/2018 12:47

Blue at birth, turned to green around 6 months and settled at brown by 12 months. I was hoping they'd stay green like mine, but nope, she's a brown eyes babe like her Dad.

My DS has gorgeous dark blue eyes when he was born, changed to a really dark brown when he was a few months old.

BornInALighthouse · 06/06/2018 12:54

Over 6 months or so. They were a great dark blue colour for a while, I was beginning to think that was her colour then kind of suddenly they were brown.

immortalmarble · 06/06/2018 12:55

Mine have been dark brown since birth Smile

NoSuchThingAsAlpha · 06/06/2018 12:57

Fun fact: eye colour can continue to change right up to early 20s!

overmydeadbody · 06/06/2018 12:58

All my children are brown eyed, but started off as a very dark indigo blue, very different to the blue of my nephews who are all still blue eyed.

By six months they were completely brown.

steppemum · 06/06/2018 12:59

I have 3 dc, 2 have blue eyes and the youngest has brown

The blue eyed ones were clear bright/pale blue at birth
The brown eyed one was very dark blue, obviously not the same colour as 'blue eyes' and they gradually went brown, can't remember how quickly, but within weeks I think.

My nieces are mixed race and their eyes were brown from birth

HoppingPavlova · 06/06/2018 13:00

Sapphire blue at birth. Around 6mths started to change colour, ended up brown by 18mths.

GummyGoddess · 06/06/2018 13:01

@NoSuchThingAsAlpha or during pregnancy! I used to have bright blue eyes until I had dc1, they're now light green.

Aprilshouldhavebeenmyname · 06/06/2018 13:01

Around 18 weeks my dd eyes started to go brown. After many many blue eyed dc it was very weird looking at her and realising she was actually mine!! I have blue eyes also!!

CoodleMoodle · 06/06/2018 13:04

DD's eyes were blue at birth, and have gradually turned a lovely green/brown (hazel?). I have very bright blue eyes and DH has very dark brown eyes, and we did expect hers to turn eventually. She's 4 now. She has my hair (light brown) rather than his (very dark brown, almost black), though.

Due DS soon, looking forward to seeing what colour eyes and hair he comes out with!

MustBeThursday · 06/06/2018 13:09

Mine were brown at birth, as were DC1. Dc2 was grey-brown and now are properly brown. DC1 was darker haired than DC2.

HappyLollipop · 06/06/2018 13:10

DS went from a light brown to a darker brown within a month. I'm black so have really dark brown eyes (almost black) and my DP is mixed race with a weird blue/green eyes mix their more blue on the outside but look greener towards the pupil. DS eyes are now a darker shade of brown but not as dark as mine.

Theweasleytwins · 06/06/2018 15:43

My DT had blue eyes at birth. My mil was convinced they would stay that colour😑

They were brown by six months 😁

WeaselsRising · 06/06/2018 16:32

I have 4 with brown eyes and 1 with blue. All were born with blue eyes; the youngest with an almost navy blue colour. Don't remember when the older ones' changed but DC5 had brown eyes by about 16 weeks.

CPtart · 06/06/2018 16:48

DS1 has had dark brown eyes since birth, now 15. Just like DH and both PIL. They're lovely.

Gillian1980 · 06/06/2018 22:48

Dd was born with blue eyes like me. They started changing at about 4-5 months I think and it happened slowly ... by about 12 months they were dark brown like her dad.
