If your child has brown eyes, were they brown at birth?

Or, if they changed from blue to brown, when did this happen?

DD is three months old and has blue eyes, like me. Her dad has brown eyes, so I wonder if DD's will turn brown.

I've seen other threads about eye colour changes and when they happened, but I got confused as some people were talking about more subtle changes, such as a change from blue to grey (which I think tends to happen later?)

They were clear light blue at birth, started to get darker blue about 6 months, then gradually greener around a year, now at 20 months they are definitely hazel like his Dad’s.

Kenworthington · 07/06/2018 08:08

All my Dc were born with blue eyes but the one who turned out to have brown, his were dark oily almost metallic blue at birth.

Furrycushion · 07/06/2018 08:08

DD & DS2 both born with blue eyes that turned dark brown by a week old. Dd's now an amber-brown colour, DS2's still dark brown.

How interesting. One of my 3 has dark brown eyes. I have no idea when they changed colour. It must have been so gradual I didn't notice. I need to go and dig out some old photos now. The other 2 have green-blue-brown eyes that look different depending on what colour of jumper they are wearing.

All mine had blue eyes until 12-24 months. Then they changed to their respective colours. It was a bit of a shock.

mostdays · 07/06/2018 08:40

All mine stayed blue eyes which was annoying, I thought at least one would get my brown eyes! My DM says mine were definitely going brown when she brought my home at 10 days old. She can't remember with my brother as she was so sleep deprived.

Trinpy · 07/06/2018 08:44

Both my dcs had dark blue eyes at birth which slowly changed to brown within the first 6 months or so. It was hard to tell exactly when because for a long time they could look blue or brown depending on the light. MiL was very disappointed because she'd been hoping for a blue eyed grandchild. No one on either side of the family has blue eyes so very unlikely that that would happen!

My daughter was born with really dark brown eyes and they've stayed that way so not all babies are born with blue eyes! Most yes but not all!!

Babynonamee · 07/06/2018 09:12

I think it probably depends on how blue your DDs eyes are?
Are they light sky blue? (I really doubt they will change)
Or are they dark sapphire blue? (They might change, they might not)

Brendatheblender · 07/06/2018 09:16

Both my DCs were born with deep brown eyes, they have lighten slightly but still a gorgeous brown

JessicaJonesJacket · 07/06/2018 09:44

I've just realised I don't know exactly when DS' eyes changed. He was born with dark blue eyes but by the time he was 11 months, they were more brown, then they settled to a beautiful hazel.

Skyejuly · 07/06/2018 09:46

Ds born blue and stayed blue till 13mths then slowly went Brown
Dd1 born blue but went Brown by 6m
Dd2 born blue and still ice blue at 5
Dd3 born blue but went green/hazel by 6m

AllIHaveToDo · 07/06/2018 09:56

Ds1 has brown eyes. They were a deep blue at birth. They remained blue for a long while. Eventually they turned green and I actually thought they'd remain that way. Then they started gradually getting darker and now they are a light brown shade.

Ds2 eyes remained blue.

WildCherryBlossom · 07/06/2018 11:27

One of mine went from blue to green. The others were distinctly brown at birth.

Baubletrouble43 · 07/06/2018 15:43

Dd1 born blue gradually changed fully brown at 9ish months
Dd2 born brown
Dd3 born blue still blue at 18 months odd because me and dp both brown eyed!

yumscrumfatbum · 07/06/2018 15:51

Three of my children have blue eyes, one has green. I have very dark brown eyes and DH has blue eyes. I thought brown eyes were a dominant gene but I guess they can't be!

Roomba · 07/06/2018 16:12

DS1 had a sort of dark slate grey/blue at birth. They gradually changed to dark brown by around 4 months.

DS2 had much paler blue eyes at birth. Still not quite sure what colour I'd call them now (he's 5). They're a greyish blue but with thick a golden brown ring around the pupils.

Both parents have brown eye but there's two blue eyes grandparents. Have had to spend many hours explaining to my ex how it is possible for DS2 to have blue eyes!

Silversun83 · 08/06/2018 15:40

Also find eye colour genetics fascinating! DH and I both have dark brown eyes and dark brown hair so were expecting any offspring to follow suit..

DD was born with blue eyes and dark brown hair - we expected the hair colour to stay and the eyes to change! However, at two, she now has dark blonde hair and still has blueish grey eyes!

DS is only 12 weeks however still has his blue eyes.. Statistically they should go brown (there's a 12% chance that both our children will have blue eyes!), however I'm sure they're actually bluer than DD's were at this age.. Again was born with dark brown hair which has gone a little chestnutty so be interesting to see what will happen there!

Furrycushion · 08/06/2018 18:30

Each child has the same chance of being blue eyed. It's not a combined risk as they are independent of each other

Mamabear12 · 08/06/2018 21:31

Thats not true about the eyes always being blue at birth. My dd eyes were very dark brown at birth, no mistake at that! And her eyes are currently still very dark brown, almost black at 6 years old! My ds on the other hand were a very dark blue at birth, but more clear in the centre. I have noticed the babies that are navy blue, w no clear centre seam to turn brown and babies like my son, that has a clearish blue centre stay blue. Hard to describe really, but to me that is the best way. My son still has light eyes at almost 5 years old and blonde hair, while my dd has brown eyes and brown hair. However, my son has more of light grey or green grey eyes then blue.

SamPotatoes · 08/06/2018 21:44

Dd had black eyes when she was born- she really looked like it was all pupil. She now has the most beautiful golden eyes- green outer and amber inner. I find it fascinating as she is my spitting image apart from her eyes.

MelanieSmooter · 08/06/2018 21:50

No. Of my 4, all of them were born with blue eyes.

DS1s are blue, but much lighter.
DS2& DD have green.
DS3 are brown.

SansaClegane · 08/06/2018 22:10

DS1 had slate grey eyes at birth. Quite dark, but very clearly grey and not brown. They changed to brown at around 6 months (like lots of PPs have noticed with their babies too!).

DS2 had light blue eyes at birth. Since everyone on both sides only has brown or hazel eyes (grandparents, aunts/uncles etc) I kept waiting for them to turn brown... however he's now 7 and still blue eyed! As he's also very fair and platinum blond, I reckon the blue eyes will stay with him.

DS3 had slightly darker blue eyes at birth than DS2. I actually managed to get a few close ups of his eyes as I noticed they were changing Grin from blue to green speckled to hazel.

ittakestwo · 08/06/2018 22:15

All my boys (3 of) were born with brown eyes and my daughter green. Their dad has brown and I have green.

butlerswharf · 08/06/2018 23:00

My daughter's eyes were grey for many months. They are now brown.
