If your child has brown eyes, were they brown at birth?

Or, if they changed from blue to brown, when did this happen?

DD is three months old and has blue eyes, like me. Her dad has brown eyes, so I wonder if DD's will turn brown.

I've seen other threads about eye colour changes and when they happened, but I got confused as some people were talking about more subtle changes, such as a change from blue to grey (which I think tends to happen later?)

I have blue eyes and dh has brown.

Dd had vvvvvvvv dark brown eyes when she was born - now they’re a bit lighter at 7.

Ds had very very blue eyes now but at age 10 they turned green.

WyfOfBathe · 06/06/2018 22:56

DD was born with blue eyes. At about 7 months they started becoming pale hazel. At 18 months they're now mid-brown.

BetterEatCheese · 06/06/2018 22:56

Dd had blue eyes and brown hair at birth and by 8 months her hair was blond and her eyes were brown

DD was born with blue eyes. Within a couple of months they'd turned to an intense hazely green, and were completely brown by about 6 months. I have brown eyes and DH has green.

Freetodowhatiwant · 06/06/2018 23:03

Ds1 was born with blue eyes like his dad (I’m mixed English/Asian) but they went greenish after about 6 months and then brown by about 12 months. Ds2’s eyes stayed a very bright blue and haven’t changed. He’s also got white blonde hair but looks very similar to his Indian grandad! Genetics are fascinating like that.

JellySlice · 06/06/2018 23:05

One had very dark blue, black in some lights, and turned chocolate button brown by the time they were 10 days old. Two had gray-blue. One likewise turned chocolate button brown, though this one took 4 weeks. The other changed colour several times, and was nearly 2 before they settled as hazel. I'd read about 'violet eyes' , but this was the first time I'd ever seen eyes that really looked purplish blue! That was when they were 6-8m. Wish I'd captured them in a photo.

skankingpiglet · 06/06/2018 23:16

DD1 had very dark brown eyes from birth. They would/still do soak up a room.
DD2 had steely-grey eyes when born, but they were a deep brown by 3mo. They are lighter than DD1's though.

I have blue/green eyes, DH has dark brown.

Cattenberg · 06/06/2018 23:17

So, anything could happen then? Genetics is indeed fascinating. I think brown eyes are beautiful, but I love DD the way she is and find the idea of her eyes changing colour a bit strange. But if they do, I'll definitely try to catch the transition on camera. I've never actually seen anyone's eyes change colour so far.

Both of my children were born with blue eyes so I was surprised when my second child's eyes changed from blue to brown. It is a really odd thing to see happening - it took several weeks to fully change into a dark brown. I came across a picture of him at several months old with dark blue eyes and it was interesting to see. They had completely changed by about 9 months.

I have very blue eyes (often get comments on them which I like) like my dad, my DD has grey eyes like my mom, My DH and DS have the same shade of brown eyes. It's interesting to see genetics at work!

mcqueencar · 06/06/2018 23:38

DC1 born with blue eyes that got lighter so I knew they wouldn’t change to brown. They went through a few shades of blue & are now blue/green. My eyes are blue/green (used to be more blue when I was younger) & DH are hazel. DC2 is 15 months & I think his eyes will be hazel, they went a darker blue since his birth. He has hazel but a blue rim around them which I assume will darken. It’s weird because he looks very much like my family members but everyone has blue eyes.

numptynuts · 06/06/2018 23:47

Fun fact: eye colour can continue to change right up to early 20s!

Both mine and my DD and DS did early 20s from blue to blue with green in the centre. Blzzare because they were both away at uni and when you visit one day at random they look so different!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 06/06/2018 23:55

Mine were very dark brown until - well I'm not sure but I remember in my teens looking in a mirror and thinking 'Christ they are very green!'. Mum said 'oh yes, they were very brown when you were little'. One of my sisters eyes change colour now if she is tired or run down - brown to green (we call her the hulk).

GinIsIn · 07/06/2018 00:02

DS has bright blue eyes, like me, and at 16 months they’re probably staying as DH’s are blue too. He does, however, have strawberry blonde hair, which startled us as although I do, DH’s hair is nearly black so we thought that would win out!

pieceofpurplesky · 07/06/2018 00:07

DS was born with dark brown eyes and loads of midwives cake to see him as it is unusual

foxpox · 07/06/2018 00:09

My first two dc stayed blue-eyed. One that changed to a lighter blue over a few weeks and the other a rich blue that has stayed the same since the first few days. My third started dark blue and over 2 months slowly got darker and are now dark brown. Dh had very dark brown eyes but now (mid 30's) they're hazel! I have blue eyes and if I'm remembering my a-level biology correctly I would have expected a higher proportion of brown-eyed children. Though, I'm sure my genes gave dh's a shove at some point as all dc's look like me!

Tortycat · 07/06/2018 00:09

Ds1 - dark blue at birth which have slowly turned blue/green (he's now 4). Ds2 were very dark brown at birth and still are at 2 - don't think he'll change. Mine a green and dh are brown- love the lottery!

PastaSauceHoarder · 07/06/2018 00:15

My little girl had very dark blue/grey eyes when she was born - now that she is a year old she has the darkest most beautiful big brown eyes, which go slightly greenish in the sunlight.
She gets her eyes from her daddy, I absolute love them!

Ariela · 07/06/2018 00:22

I was born with very dark brown eyes, as was my daughter. Yet she has OH's freckles and fair skin, but my dark hair

CatchingBabies · 07/06/2018 00:24

The vast majority of Caucasian babies are born with blue eyes and it darkens over time, up to around 9 months old. Some will darken earlier, it all depends on the level of melatonin they have. Darker skinned babies tend to have eyes that darken quicker than fairer skinned babies. Genetics is a fascinating subject!

Jozxyqk · 07/06/2018 00:29

DH & I are basically the same colouring, with hazel eyes. DD had deep violet eyes at birth, they were hazel within a month.

Gibble1 · 07/06/2018 00:29

DD’s eyes started turning brown when she was about 2 hours old.
DS had blue eyes which went greyish and then when he was about 8 months old I remarked to DH that I thought they might be turning brown. MiL piped up that he was far too old to change eye colour.
He now has brown eyes 😂.
The 3 of us all have the family eyes but ours all change colour in certain lights or when we’re tired.

RhinoBlue · 07/06/2018 00:45

I find eye colour fascinating. At birth my youngest were like a really dark almost black navy. They quickly changed to the most gorgeous dark chocolate brown. His eyes are huge too, so he is absolutely gorgeous. In photos it can be difficult to tell where his pupils start. But neither his Dad nor I have brown eyes! Not even close to brown - so don't believe what they teach in GCSE biology 😂

My oldest had dark navy then violet coloured eyes, they are now like mine a kinda blue/green/grey.

My middle child had blue blue eyes when he was born and they haven't changed at all still very blue.

AornisHades · 07/06/2018 01:05

DC1 -blue eyes for about 6 months then went to the deep brown that DH has.
Dc2 - blue eyes for about 9 months and them went slowly greeny brown.
I'm going to be the last blue eyed person in my family...

BabiesDontNeedDaddies · 07/06/2018 01:12

Me and one of my sister's had blue eyes until we were around 5. Then mine turned green, hers dark brown.

UndomesticHousewife · 07/06/2018 01:33

Dd1 had quite light blue eyes at birth and they stayed like that although I looked at her the other day and thought her eyes looked green (she's 18 now)
Dd2 has dark dark brown eyes at birth they stayed like that.
Ds had blue grey eyes at birth they turned brown after a few months.
