Grow veg with your children there is no excuse

I can not tell you how much fun it is to grow plants with your children and how good it is for your own self. Currently living in what i call my concrete garden (slabs and gravel) but managing to grow veg. Its a must please try it. Even if its water cress

Any tips??

We started a kitchen garden last year and the DC loved digging up potatoes in particular. We have large raised beds on tarmac.

I agree that having a sense of where food comes from and taking ownership of some of that process is great. It is also good for understanding life cycles and connecting with nature.

I can imagine that some people may have a valid reason for not doing it mind you

Only tip is start with peas they are so quick to grow and take i think 70 days from seed to harvest If i can grow them anyone can

Actuall the easiest and quickest thing from what i can think is probably water cress

Radishes are super fast growing as well.

Op can you post a pic of your concrete garden? I want to grow veg but have no idea how to. Ill soon have empty water play tray tables though. Would that work?

You can grow tomatoes from the seeds on a normal tomato, I'm not sure why that shocked me but we tried it and it worked!

Cloudtree that's great did you grow the potatoes inside? I am no expert on growing, myself and little one have just enjoyed it a lot.

But the joys of walking round at night with a torch and a bag of salt cann't be described.

What age is your child? Mines currently 15months and would love to make a start but just envision him eating mud

If your looking for an alternative to salt you can buy slug tape

The title of this thread comes across as quite patronising but I understand the sentiment behind it.
My DS does gardening club at school which he loves, so I guess I’m off the hook!

This was my horrible tarmac area before we started, couldn't have been more ugly if it tried. You can see the size of the beds we put in. We have three of these and four smaller ones made from old crates that held patio slabs.

Dd1 is a fussy eater. It was suggested to grow veg. Together we grew various veg, she harvested them, we cooked it together and made little faces and such. Would she eat it? Would she fuck! It was fun until dinner time though!

Um not everyone has a garden nor space to house an indoor veg patch

My little ones school age. Not sure how to avoid eating mud but i'm sure little one could throw mud and compost into a pot (and all over the floor) and push seeds into it with there hand. You may have to save the seeds and replant them later when small ones not looking. Even things like helping fill up a small watering can or cup. It'll probably be fun but i doubt it will be clean.

Also I can't bear cress and nor can DH or DS so would be an utter waste.
