I was looking forward to reading this thread, hoping for lovely pics and some tips and tricks for beginners but no it had to be ruined by the professionally offended.

You earth up the potatoes as they get taller OP. That basically just means piling more earth on. Potatoes are really easy (as long as you don't get blight). You can actually just plant one that has started sprouting in the cupboard (although you get better success rates if you buy seed potatoes).

Rhubarb is the food of the gods.

I just moved my toms and they have sprouted a little Shock so hopefully there's no stopping them now they are called minibel tomatoes and they grow like a bush rather than needing support.
The rhubarb you just buy a plant or crown and grow it we chopped down a tree bushy thing in the flower bed at the weekend ready for it. So hopefully we will get one tomorrow plant it in but wont know how good it tastes until next year (have to wait a year for it to establish)

Irene thats a good idea no need to buy a pot either.Sweet corn wow i didnt even know you could grow that here.
I wouldnt have a problem witht he tomatoes im going to have to try and stop her eating them all. Sods law i probably wont be able to get them to grow though
Mavis thats not good. I would love one. I totally agree with that idea. Even if its allottment sharing. My selling is terrible im trying to type quickly to reply.

Yes queen city. If i can manage to get a seed to sprout im sure yourll manage it. Smile

Tartan, I'm sorry that things have obviously been difficult for you but you really need to give it a rest. Start your own thread and see if people can give you support on that. Let those of us that want to discussing gardening get on with it.

formerbabe · 24/04/2018 19:05

Do you have idea what the grind of spending years and years trying to do your best and there’s always something else

Don't take this thread personally...I get the titles a little Hmm

I'd imagine the vast majority of children aren't growing their own veg! Including mine!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 24/04/2018 19:06

Fosters you don't need a garden....do you have a window? You can grow herbs & tomatoes in window boxes. And nasturtiums are as simple as popping a seed in some soil. Edible flowers for your salad & cake decorating - SO cool 😎

QueenCity · 24/04/2018 19:06

Discuss not discussing

Waiting for my nephew to finish his exams and make me a greenhouse. Had some success with green beans last year but slugs and caterpillars ate everything else. Sad Chemical war has been declared on the slugs this year. Now dc are old enough not to eat attractive blue pellets off the floor. Wink
Dc loved having a tallest sunflower competition.

formerbabe · 24/04/2018 19:07

This thread could also be quite useful and interesting but the 'no excuses' comment comes across as smug and patronising.

AgentHannahWells · 24/04/2018 19:08

Dear keepdlingwhatyourgutsays

Develop manners with your children there is no excuse

It's really easy and makes the world an even better place than growing dress does.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 24/04/2018 19:09

Omg stop looking for reasons to take offence people!

If you don't want to grow veg then don't. But why not try to be nice and a bit more kind to posters? Hmm

AgentHannahWells · 24/04/2018 19:10

PS I tried growing veg with children and it was not fun in the slightest.

We planted beets & greens in pop up bags last year (about £12 x2). This year we've got an allotment. Horses for courses though, it's interesting for some folk, dull as dishwater for others.

I keep meaning to try potatoes. I bought a deep tub ready but never filled it. Is it really as simple as putting soil in and a sprouted spud?

Peas sounds like a good shout too. I used to like eating those out of the pod when we went picking.

I meant to buy tomatoes to plant on the weekend but forgot. Going to do it this weekend!!

IntoTheFloodAgain · 24/04/2018 19:11

It’s just a phrase.

So pleased I found this thread.

Furious outbursts and passive aggression interspersed with pictures of vegetable beds. This is why I love MN

Isadora666 · 24/04/2018 19:12

Maybe some English lessons would be time better spent? 😈
