Did anyone else do progressive Christmas presents?

It seems like I'm the only one. According to Facebook atleast. My son is super excited to earn his next lot. There must be others though right?

Wow. Some threads just leave you a bit speechless. Why bother starting a thread if you wont explain yourself further or answer people's questions and then be so rude when people aren't all gushing wow, what a wonderful idea. For the record no I didn't have progressive presents as a child, nor did I do them for my children. A gift is a gift. They may add to their sets with money they received or for birthdays but I thought that was normal. Sometimes just for the hell of it I see something I think they'll like on a random day and buy it!

Sorry but the thought of a child having to be a very good boy for a BUTTON sort of breaks my heart a little bit.

If buttons are his thing and he gets excited by them, just embrace it, don't turn it into a chore. Poor little sod, sucking the joy out of gifts for him.

Eh?

This is bizarre, and not very present like. Give a gift because you love your children and can afford to treat them, not as a tool to manage their behaviour. Even if I thought it was a good idea, my kids would definitely not keep their room tidy if I offered them their name on a dressing gown or a new fancy button.

BackforGood · 29/12/2017 21:44

Shame OP has gone really, as, bizarre as it sounds, I'd still like to find out what it is she is talking about. Shame she won't tell us.

Oh jeeZ once was enough for that song lol

NorbertTheDragon · 29/12/2017 21:53

Fgs, I bought all my kids a 5 pack of socks, and spoilt them by giving them all 5 at once.

If only I'd done this progressive Christmas they'd have had 1 pair on the day and could have earned the rest by tidying their rooms etc. Now all they have are 5 pairs of socks and messy rooms.

Maybe I could take the chocolate oranges off them and make them earn each segment?

RebelRogue · 29/12/2017 21:57

Actually it makes more sense in the "age old" context. Ofc from a poverty pov rather than life lessons.
Grandma would get a proper dress, as in not homemade from scraps or hand me downs, once a year at Christmas if that.
Then during the year she might get some nice lace to make a collar or the little sleeve thingies for it. Or maybe some nice buttons. Or some material to increase length if she outgrew it.
Ofc she only went to school for 4 years, was worked in the fields and married at 16.... but you know... buttons!

Jayfee · 29/12/2017 22:01

Is the op American..or am I showing unreasonable prejudice?

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 22:06

Well it certainly isn't an age old tradition in the UK that's for sure. If it I was my tight arse PILs would have told DH about it!

starzig · 29/12/2017 22:15

I believe the actual concept is:
Boy gets coat
Coat has plain buttons
If boy is good jan, he gets to swap plain button for fancy button
If boy is good feb he gets to swap another
Etc until all buttons swapped and coat is now too small

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 29/12/2017 22:23

Jayfee · 29/12/2017 22:46

Hmm..what school of child psychology does this gem come from??

buttercup54321 · 29/12/2017 22:50

Never heard of it. A gift should be a gift not something you earn.

RebelRogue · 29/12/2017 22:56

@Jayfee I'd tell you, but you haven't earned it yet.Grin

Babybauble · 29/12/2017 22:59

My DC got two each yesterday, thought would stretch the fun out a bit :)

nestletollhouse · 29/12/2017 23:23

You said this:

It seems like I'm the only one. According to Facebook atleast.

Now you're getting a unanimous 'no never heard of it', but somehow it's an age old tradition?

Just admit it's a parenting fail op.

RebelRogue · 29/12/2017 23:31

@Babybauble 2 what? Buttons?

I've said buttons so much the word has lost all meaning..

SimultaneousEquation · 29/12/2017 23:42

But wouldn’t it be be embarrassing for the kid to have non-matching buttons? Mine would freak out about the January button being different to the proper buttons.

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 23:46

I used to love playing with a big basket of buttons at my grandmothers house when I was about 4 or 5 (bearing in mind it was the late 80's and there was nothing else to do!) couldn't see children of today being quite so into buttons...Confused

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 23:49

Progressive gifting would really push my buttons Grin

clumsyduck · 30/12/2017 00:17

I was done at the button upgrading part

Speechless

GreenTulips · 30/12/2017 00:25

She's really into Barbies

Clearly you decapitate barbie .... oh hang in that's just my kids ...
