Did anyone else do progressive Christmas presents?

It seems like I'm the only one. According to Facebook atleast. My son is super excited to earn his next lot. There must be others though right?

What the fuck is progressive christmas presents. Is it like receiving one earring now and the other if I am a good girl?

Well she's not into buttons so that wouldn't be part of the present. She's really into Barbies

AGE OLD? How far back does this "tradition" go exactly?

Parker231 · 29/12/2017 20:40

I’ve just read the whole thread and still non the wiser. Why not just give your DC’s their Christmas presents. Christmas presents don’t have to be earned. If you can’t spoil them at Christmas when can you? All seems very odd.

@MiaowTheCat don't!!! Never realised how wrong that song is until listening to it with my 5 yo.

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 20:42

Never heard of progressive Christmas presents and not sure it's something I'd do personally.

AlexaDoTheDishes · 29/12/2017 20:42

Well I hate Barbies and YouTube so that wouldn't work.

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 20:43

Oh that barbie song had far too many inuendos in its hardcore

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 20:44

With ds I like idea of him just diving on to pile of presents and it being super exciting and not like any other day. I think the progressive thing kind of shares out the fun/excitement and I like ds to have it maxed on one day

Hoppinggreen · 29/12/2017 20:44

freak

GerdaLovesLili · 29/12/2017 20:45

Presumably there must be a website explaining this age old tradition. Please OP, show us where it is!

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 20:46

Certainly don't play that terrible song though it was awful

SimultaneousEquation · 29/12/2017 20:47

I have now consulted my dc. Ds1 says he’s good anyway and doesn’t need extra bits on his clothes to make him better. Ds2 said he’d do it if one of the buttons was the nuclear button, then changed his mind and said he’s not wearing anything with weird stuff on, and he’d behave better just to avoid it. So win-win.

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 20:51

Have you had one Christmas that you haven't done progressive presents and just let your son dive in and have fun with now having to earn them?

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 20:51

not

Curtainshopping · 29/12/2017 20:52

Did anyone else do progressive Christmas presents?

I think it's fair to say the answer is 'No, we didn't'

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 20:52

without rather

Fromage · 29/12/2017 20:54

I am so confused by this. I don't think this is an age old tradition - not in any UK culture anyway. Maybe it's an ancient tradition in some minority region/culture/nationality, but I have never heard of it.

The OP still hasn't spelt out exactly what goes on in this progressive present thing. As far as I can gather, presents are given, then the recipient later gets to add on to the present, if they've been good.

Oh, and not doing this can contribute to a generation of spoiled children and thus a nation of brats and the eventual fall of civilisation.

Well merry christmas everyone.

But in answer to the question of the title of this thread: no, no one else did progressive Christmas presents, because no one else has heard of them, and now we have heard a little about the concept, pretty much all of us think it's madness.

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 20:59

I think this thread is a hoax

EvilDoctorHogmanayDuck · 29/12/2017 21:00

Even DD 10 thinks it's crazy.

Gazelda · 29/12/2017 21:03

What happens once you've replaced all the buttons? Is the second half of the year an unhappy ordeal of insolence and bad behaviour? Or do you start a whole new progression?

If a dressing gown has (progressive) buttons, doesn't that make it a housecoat?

I can't google Barbie Girl - can someone tell me what the problem is with it?

Fromage · 29/12/2017 21:09

I think I would request buttons with letters on them. And then I would end up with a dressing gown that, when buttoned up, said

It would be a long, long dressing gown. I might also request a pair of stilts for Christmas, to accommodate my progressive present review.

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 29/12/2017 21:18

Surely if you did this behaviour to another adult it would be considered to be abusive? If my husband bought me a dressing gown for Christmas but removed the buttons and I had to earn each button back by cleaning the bathroom etc, I’d be advised to LTB.

Maybe I’m just still not getting what progressive presenting is about but it seems cruel to me tbh.
