MIL fed 12wk old....

My MIL has watched DC2 overnight a couple of times as he’s a terrible sleeper. She watched him last night and said he’d slept great which is unheard of. She then said she had given him custard before bed. She said she knew we wouldn’t be happy about it but did it anyway. AIBU by being thoroughly pissed off?! Angry

Meh. It's no worse for a baby than formula milk. Granted the proteins in it have not been broken down like formula is to make it more easily digestible. My great gran mix fed all her babies on breast and carnation milk. All bonnie babies from what I've heard.

Maybe your MIL was desperate as baby seemed distressed?. I have heard that FF babies usually need to wean much earlier than BF babies, as formula does not/cannot adapt to meet a developing baby's changing nutritional needs.

Times like this I'm glad I persevered with breastfeeding.

When baby is born the HV give you red book for girl / blue book for boy. It is used to record weight/height/immunisation/illnesses and also has advice on weaning sleeping etc

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 15/12/2017 19:09

I'd be seething.

She's shot herself in the foot, really, hasn't she? No more babysitting.

Taylor22 · 15/12/2017 19:11

I've never seen a blue book.
Here it's red books for all.

BertieBotts · 15/12/2017 19:15

Ky probably because the idea of absolutely everything lining up and conforming to some official guideline (who decides this anyway, and how?) is rather a modern one led by the internet and all the official pages needing, basically, to match.

In past decades there wouldn't even have been the same guidance nationally, let alone from individual HCPs and such sources.

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/12/2017 19:15

It's a red book, no other colours given out in my area.

It looks like this:

wtf @runwalkrun thats just strange.

always a red book in our area regardless of sex.
i would be pissed off that MIL breached that trust.

I'm regularly reminded that my baby dc was hungry at 2 months and that my in laws gave dh rusks and weaned at 3 months along with formula. i bite my lip to remind them off all the allergies he now has.

BertieBotts · 15/12/2017 20:13

My red book looks like that picture as well but I don't think it has any advice, just space for records.

run - nurse can definitely mean cuddle! Not always breastfeed.

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/12/2017 20:25

Mine has a section of advice (which id never actually looked at before...) which mentions infant feeding as in milk feeds. No mention of weaning at all.

GreenTulips · 15/12/2017 20:37

I have twins so one red book/gold writing one red book/ blue writing

ProperLavs · 16/12/2017 08:43

I have never seen a blue book. The earlier red books were colour coded dependent on sex. So I had boy specific books for my older 2 with just blue growth weight charts for boys, later for my girls I got girl(pink) specific books. For my youngest 2 the books were mixed.

You heard wrong.

I agree that this is bollocks

bruffin · 16/12/2017 12:59

Found the books
Blue for ds 95 and red dd 97. Intestingly the 95 book has no mention of solids, lots of other advice but not feeding. The 97 one has the attached advice plus more info on bf

The trust would be gone for me. She knew you wouldn’t have wanted her to do it but did so anyway.

To reassure a previous poster, my dad uses the term “nursing” to describe giving the baby a cuddle or rocking them if they are upset. No idea where he got it from, maybe it’s a generational thing.

That is reassuring.
I have no idea why my post was deleted Confused

BakerBear · 17/12/2017 08:58

I would be absolutley fuming!!!

What happens now though, has he has had food and therefore being started weaning would you have to carry it on?

I was always under the impression that once its started you cant stop

frogmellah · 17/12/2017 09:00

I think you got confused with Pringles

MynewnameisKy · 17/12/2017 10:11

I think this is the definition of nursing that many older people like my Dad use. hold closely and carefully or caressingly. eg.
"he nursed his small case on his lap"

My Dad has often offered to "nurse" Ds while I get my lunch etc

BertieBotts · 17/12/2017 10:39

Huh? Why wouldn't you be able to stop weaning once started?

BakerBear · 17/12/2017 10:45

When I had my first 5 years ago health visitors used to say once you started them on food then you had to carry on.

I don’t know why they said this but it wasn’t just one health visitor that said it

BertieBotts · 17/12/2017 10:46

How strange, never heard it before.
