What's the earliest I can take newborn out of the house in the pram for a walk?

Hi

We have a six-day-old and I need to give her mum a break for an hour or so. Am I okay to take her out in the pram? She and her mum are dubious, but it's 13 degrees and I have friends who did it in London in November...

Yep hat on, blankets etc. You'll enjoy it, she will be fine and the mum will get a break.

Of course you can take her out
Just make sure she has a hat on and is wrapped up
Also make sure you take layers off when you come inside as babies can't regulate their own hat and can overheat quickly

Wrap baby up nice and warm. Ensure a clean nappy and a full tummy.

Fwiw MiL took DD out for two hours in November at 3 days old and she slept the whole time.

Day 1?
Babies tend to be cocooned, whether it be in a puschair, a car seat or wrapped in blankets and held in arms. I would say your friends baby is plenty old enough to be taken out for a walk in a puschair. I once met a woman in Mothercare changing rooms with a 3 day old.

Baby will be fine as long as she's warm, dry and fed.

Why are they dubious?

Wrapped up warm she'll be fine, we took our little one out a few days post birth, (late October on peak district border). Congratulations

I had my daughter out from the day after she was born went out to do food shopping with my husband... nice blankets, hat and coat suit your baby will be fine ... make sure you put the rain cover on in the night for the night cold so the cold.

She'll be fine. We took our DD out for a walk at 4 days I think, I couldn't walk far but we were desperate to get out for a bit of fresh air. If you want to check how warm she is pop your fingers against the back of her neck.

We went to the pub when DS was 4 days old! Out for a walk and ended up in a pub. Did the same on day 8 (back in hospital days 5-6 so that's the only reason we weren't out then!)

I don't understand this. But chances are it's morning where the op is, I don't think there's much danger of night falling while he's out.

I love taking babies out in a pram for a walk.

Thanks! There's something here in Italy called 'colpo d'aria', it's like a breeze but if you come into contact with it you apparently DIE IMMEDIATELY :-P. I'll take that risk.

Congratulations on your baby. We have a 6 day old too and have been on a couple of short walks with him wrapped up warmly.

Of course it's fine to take them out. I understand the concern though - I'm from a country where fresh air is essential, but any kind of breeze or draft will KILL YOU DEAD

I have read threads here about the Italian attitude to children and fresh air, your OP suddenly makes a lot more sense

You sound lovely. Just check baby's mum is completely happy for you to take baby. I got persuaded with my first for someone to take her for a walk in the pram at a similar age when I didn't want to be away from her. I know they were trying to be nice but it was horrible. The feeling of being separated from my baby was just awful (completely irrational as I knew she was safe) but think it can be the hormones, etc.
Everyone is different though so she might be really happy to have a break. Just thought I'd mention it incase that was the reason she was saying she was dubious but she didn't want to say.
If she is happy for you to go then no reason not to take her.

My ds was born in middle of January in a really cold winter, ds6 wanted to play out sledging, walked up hill with 3day old in -3, all still alive and no one blinked an eye

So the cold don't hit up the baby's nose
