What's the earliest I can take newborn out of the house in the pram for a walk?

Hi

We have a six-day-old and I need to give her mum a break for an hour or so. Am I okay to take her out in the pram? She and her mum are dubious, but it's 13 degrees and I have friends who did it in London in November...

Thanks!

Rich

Yes but the baby won't be breathing cold air ... the baby will be warm inside the buggy with the rain cover..

Ah, Italians. My nana and grandad were Italian. When I had my first baby I wanted to take him out in the car when he was a couple of days old. They were worried he'd catch 'something' between the front door and the car. Anyway, now I'm on baby number four and he was out in his pram on the school run before he was 24-hours old. He is fine.

Congratulations OP.

Stealth yup - you need a car seat to leave the hospital. If you are leaving it in a car. We are not, we only live 10 mins walk from the hospital, and have checked that this is fine with both the GP and the midwives. DH will bring the baby home in the pram - a 10 min walk through the park, and I will jump in a cab with my hospital bag.

I was in John Lewis on day 2 and in the pub on day 3!

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2017 11:22

Sounds like your hospital engage commons sense :) there have been lot of threads from people who weren't allowed to leave without the baby in a car seat despite the fact they were not driving rhe baby home :) madness!

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2017 11:23

Presumably people that live in vv cold countries manage to take their babies out without all this stress.

Goingtobeawesome · 05/02/2017 11:23

Whenever you want. They've already been out unless they weren't born in hospital..

GinIsIn · 05/02/2017 11:24

Grin Hope so, stealth! It might be something to do with us being in a place where lots of people don't drive. We do have a car seat, so DH could nip home for it if needed, but as we don't have a car, it would just be to attach the car seat to the pushchair before we went Grin

Thingywhatsit · 05/02/2017 11:26

Take the baby out - will be fine! My last baby was wondering round local waitrose at less than 24 hours old, collecting people from airport at 36 hours old, and at the bowling alley at 5/6 days old!

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 05/02/2017 11:26

Yes but the baby won't be breathing cold air ... the baby will be warm inside the buggy with the rain cover..

So recycled air is better than fresh air?!?! That's actual madness.

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2017 11:27

Wow, fantasically developed gross and fine motor skills plus sense of familial responsibility there!

GinIsIn · 05/02/2017 11:28

user it somewhat defeats the point of taking the baby for a walk in the fresh air if you put the cover on and poach it in carbon dioxide. Unless you are in sub-zero temperatures your baby is not going to suffer nasal burns from fresh air.

Noodlehair · 05/02/2017 11:29

Blimey, someone should have told the Eskimo people about the need for a rain cover against the cold air. Clearly wrapping baby up isn't enough. It's a wonder they didn't die out, what with all the cold going up their noses!

NormaSmuff · 05/02/2017 11:32

6 day old baby,
not too long i would say. not more than 2 hours definitely. 1 hour max.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/02/2017 11:32

Don't mind me I'm just sat here laughing at the thought of 'night' air being somehow more dangerous than day 'air'.

Op- yes the Italian attitude to taking babies out is a bit odd, my Italian friend told me I was incredibly brave to take my baby out for a walk on day 3. The only reason I hadn't been out before that is because it was pouring down.

MaudOnceMore · 05/02/2017 11:33

Ah yes, the colpo d'aria. We were once on a bus near Rome in the summer holidays. All windows closed, sauna-like conditions, so we opened a window. Roman ladies clutched mohair scarves to their throats (this is Rome in July, remember) and glared at us as if we'd released anthrax into the air.

boolifooli · 05/02/2017 11:33

I had a home birth. Next day went to Asda with him for some fresh air. Cashier does the usual 'how old is he?' He was 14 hrs old Smile

C8H10N4O2 · 05/02/2017 11:34

Feed and change baby, wrap up, take outside. If you are lucky the fresh air will trigger a long sleep :)

boolifooli · 05/02/2017 11:37

How do people think we survived as a species before rain covers?

SloanyAnne · 05/02/2017 11:40

Just out of interest, what would a hospital actually do to physically prevent parents leaving with their baby to walk home if they didn't have a car seat?
Would Justine have to lend them her SWAT team?

AndNowItsSeven · 05/02/2017 11:41

User makes sense the raincover keeps it warmer.

HateSummer · 05/02/2017 11:41

DS was out at 1 day old because I needed to do the food shop.
DD was out at hours old because I needed to do the school run.

I find this really sad for you wasp Sad was there no one to help you?

SolomanDaisy · 05/02/2017 11:48

I knew you'd be somewhere other than the UK. I'm in the Netherlands and was told to wait until the baby was maintaining her temperature at night, I.e. staying around 37 degrees without needing a hot water bottle. And cos DD was premature I was also told not to take her inside places for as long as possible, so fine to do the school run when she could maintain her temperature but don't go inside the school.

dotdotdotmustdash · 05/02/2017 11:51

Can you fashion this type of arrangement perhaps?

What's the earliest I can take newborn out of the house in the pram for a walk?
StickyMouse · 05/02/2017 11:51

Straight away, I took my DD out on Day 2, it was similar temperatures to now but I would be a bit cautious if we get -6 again, wrap baby up and enjoy being out, you will get admiring glances from lots of people. Congratulations
