What's the earliest I can take newborn out of the house in the pram for a walk?

Hi

We have a six-day-old and I need to give her mum a break for an hour or so. Am I okay to take her out in the pram? She and her mum are dubious, but it's 13 degrees and I have friends who did it in London in November...

Thanks!

Rich

I read this and was a bit confused, but now the OP has clarified that they are in Italy it makes perfect sense Grin For the future, watch out for hysteria around bare feet (babies must NEVER EVER have bare feet or Bad Things happen) and when the baby is older and running around, a pathological fear that he will sweat, the sweat will cool, and he will catch the flu from the cold sweat.

DC4 went on the school run on day 2 in October

Am I the only one that is giggling away at this thread?

I can just imagine the OP sitting thinking "the what? The who? The...eh?" 🤔😕

Aww you sound lovely. Get out with baby, clean nappy, wrapped up and fed. Put the rain cover on to keep the wind out. Enjoy

atheistmantis · 05/02/2017 12:03

My youngest was two days old and it was winter. Go for it.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 05/02/2017 12:06

We walked home from the hospital, ds was about 8hours old. Your little one will be fine. Enjoy your walk.

No problem with taking a newborn out however of the baby is breastfed you can't go far. In addition newborns often get their security from being close to their mothers. It is worth checking with your wife. I wouldn't have wanted any of my babies going out without me

Poverty...I'm giggling as well

I once asked a lady in TKMaxx how old her baby was. The answer was 5 hrs. I was Shock but she waved at her 3 or 3 older children and said "but they need clothes and this place has got the easiest parking". Fair point well made I thought.

Frazzled2207 · 05/02/2017 12:42

You sounds like a lovely dad. Wrap baby up and all will be well. Walk in the pram is likely to induce sleep which is why my baby was out a heck of a lot in the early months!

dotdotdotmustdash · 05/02/2017 12:45

I took my baby to see the Dentist at 5 days old because he was born with two teeth.

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2017 13:37

Wow :) I bet you got asked if he glossed, am I right?

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2017 13:37

*flossed

NotLadyPrickshit · 05/02/2017 13:51

DS was doing the school run at 2 days old... he was born in January.

Salumeria · 05/02/2017 13:52

My friend's wife (and by extension, mother in law) are Romanian, and have a similar attitude - I think the MIL was vehemently opposed to taking the baby outside at all for the first 3 months (may have been longer).
I know it caused a lot of angst when their son was a newborn.

My winter-born baby was having walks in the pram the day after she came home, so 2 days old. Wrap up warm, and it helps them sleep.

DoItTooJulia · 05/02/2017 14:25

Brilliant thread.

AWaspOnAWindowInAHeatwave · 05/02/2017 14:31

HateSummer, yeah I could have called on people for help if desperate but to be honest after both births I felt like I could take the world on Smile "needed" was perhaps to strong a word to have chosen.

JennyOnAPlate · 05/02/2017 14:44

I didn't go out with mine until they were 5 or 6 days old, but only because I was recovering from difficult births. There's no reason not to take a brand new baby out as long as you wrap up warm.

Congratulations Flowers

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 05/02/2017 14:52

I'm saying the NIGHT air is COLDER than DAY air so I think it's better to use a rain cover so the cold don't hit their nose

But the air may well be colder in the daytime of a colder day than in the nighttime of a less cold day!

OP, do you have the maglia della salute for the bambino? If so all will be well and he will be safe from the colpo d'aria Wink

Pasithea · 05/02/2017 15:07

Kid will be at school before this thread finishes ffs.

PurpleTraitor · 05/02/2017 15:15

As soon as you'd like to. Mine did the school run at hours old. By six days we were Christmas shopping at a factory outlet 45ish minutes away by car for most of the day.....

Solasum · 05/02/2017 15:46

I am very familiar with the colpo d'aria, being blessed with Italian outlaws. When DS was tiny (winter baby) they insisted on so many layers on him inside that when I popped out very briefly I came back to find him red faced and very uncomfortable in newly acquired snowsuit and extra blanket. Moving forward I suggest you adopt a less is more approach to reporting on health matters, otherwise you will spend ages having to reassure that a minor sniffle is not in fact pneumonia etc.

LauraLovesDaisy · 05/02/2017 16:24

How exciting! Wrap baby up warm and take supplies just in case. You'll be fine Smile
