Four months into potty training and about to give up

After four months of sticker charts etc My DD (age 2 and a half) is still pooing on the floor or in her pants sometimes twice a day and weeing between once and four times a day. I should say that on a good day she will take herself to the potty do a wee and empty it into the toilet several times without any bother at all and at nursery she often doesn't wee all morning until we get home. I have never been as short tempered as i am over it at the moment and desperately don't want her to become anxious about it all. I think because I didn't make a fuss intially about poos and wees on the carpet - saying nevermind love just do it on the potty next time - she nows says to me nevermind Mummy it's alright and doesn't seem in the least bit bothered by it. Any advice please?? I am planning to break what seems to be a cardinal rule and put her back in nappies tomorrow.

DS has been doing really well on the wees lately. No accidents for three days now. But still no poo on the potty. Went in his pullup when he was changed for bed yesterday and didn't go at all today. When I mentioned before bed that he hadn't done a poo today he said "I don't like poos, that's why I haven't been for a few days - I'm not going to do them anymore"!!! I don't know how I going to get him to change his mind.

I've started giving him choc buttons for if he says he needs a wee / takes himself. One today so far....just realised I forgot to clean his teeth before bed. Oh well, you can't win them all!!

Reece · 21/08/2006 18:07

Well we have had the 2nd day in a row of poos in the toilet/potty. He knew it was coming and off he went all by himself. He was so proud and is enjoying the responsibility of wiping and washing hands etc.

How long will it last is the question?
1 wee accident in the car seat again.
Getting better all round but weeing in the car is a pain in the a** Especially since I have not used bed mats in the seat for about 4 weeks.

barney2 · 22/08/2006 09:06

Well....my D has had NO accidents with wee's for the last few days and if anything is driving me absolutely mad sitting on the loo every five seconds saying she needs a wee only to say 'not there' with a big smile on he face.....grrrrwwwww...!!!

BUT she hasn't done a poo for almost 3 days now, the last one being in her knickers. She's farting for England and has eaten enough food to explode. I've told her its no big deal to do a poo in her nappy at night and to be honest I don't care if she does one in her knickers - but obviously I won't encourage her to do that!

As far as accidents when kids are tired (Reece) I think thats pretty inevitable - the last accident my D had was in the car seat which is a pain in the neck because it means stripping the seat down (although its only a booster seat with a back, but still a nuisance!) and peeling off soaked through clothes, socks, shoes etc etc.....

Why do we have these children????? I often think back to life prior to children....more money, plenty of sleep, loads of holidays, no grey hair, lie-ins.....!! x

lol Barney2. I do sometimes think about the days before kids as well but would we be without them? Not a chance. I also wonder what we did with all our spare time!!

Your DD is doing great. Any poo yet today? I have read so many thread that contain posts about kids holding in the poo for days on end. It has to come out eventually. Lots of fruit and I always find a piece of chocolate does the trick with DS.

DS has not done his poo today but after his successes with the last couple of days he ended up doing 2 poos yesterday (1 which went in his pants). I think it took him by surprise as he only normally does 1 a day

His 1st wee of the day today - he did a standing up wee into the toilet!!!! I was amazed. Where did he learn this? I asked DH and he said DS had seen him going this morning. So funny how he has copied. Hope he does it again. 1 more wee in potty since. He must be storing it all in for this afternoon when we go to the park!!!

Reece · 22/08/2006 13:44

Hey Rosieglow - Any sign of poo yet?

barney2 · 22/08/2006 14:44

Hi Reece....no poo to report so far today.....oh dear.....!!!

VickyA · 22/08/2006 20:25

My ds is has been completely trained at Nursery for over 6 months (he's now 3.5), but he refuses to have anything to do with the potty/toilet at home. I even turned up at Nursery today as he was on his way to the potty, and he refused to go, getting really upset, until I took him home (with a pull up on). I haven't been remotely forceful with him about potty/toilet, just given him the option and left it up to him, so I don't know why he got upset about it... The control issue referred to before strikes a chord with me - it's something he can decide to do or not, and I don't feel I should be pushing the issue, but should I?

Rosieglow · 22/08/2006 20:39

VickyA. We tried to force the issue with DS (3.8) and it got us nowhere. He just realised he was making me cross and started to ask if I still loved him every time he had an accident.
I am trying to back off about it all and last few days have been better for wees. Still refuses to do poos in the potty but I think he's thinking about it. Yesterday he said he was going to start doing them in the potty soon. Sunday apparently - We'll wait and see!

Reece - yes another poo in his pants today ( at nursery). Thy're still in the sink waiting to be washed out......

Reece · 22/08/2006 21:05

VickyA - Try your hardest not to make too big an issue out of your DS. It will only stress you both out. btw I am no expert on these things and have been taking advice from MN for 2 months

Rosieglow - your DS sounds like a character! Telling you he will do a poo in the potty on Sunday.... Thats so funny. Bless him.
Let us know if it happens.

My DS was great today. No wee accidents (jinxing myself again). He has not been dry for a whole day for about 3 weeks so I am really pleased. He also did 2 more wees standing up!!. No poo for us today either.

barney2 · 22/08/2006 21:24

Now here's a question for everyone.....how long can a child go without doing a poo???!!! My D hasn't done one since Friday and here we are almost Wednesday. I've just made a mental note of all the things she's eaten since Friday and my god its a scary thought that all that food is in her stomach which is no bigger than the palm of my hand....she says she needs a poo, gives it one push on the loo, and jumps straight off again and walks off. I'm getting just a little bit worried that when she does pass something it'll be so big she'll need a fork-lift to help her out! What a gruesome thought.....!!

barney2 · 23/08/2006 14:49

BREAKING NEWS....!!!! She's done a poo!!!!!! Two actually......heard her grunting and groaning in bed lastnight and my god did her room stink when I went to see if she was ok - so that was one HUGE one in her nappy last night and then, you'll never believe it, she came upstairs this morning and said she needed a poo so I suggested she sat on the loo and she did one!! She was so shocked she jumped off the loo and ran away! I calmly got her back and told her to say goodbye to poo and flush but she wasn't having any of that but hey, atleast she did one!! That'll be her quota for the next week and then we'll be back to square one again!! Hey Ho.

Rosieglow · 23/08/2006 21:29

Congrats Barney2! I bet you never realised before you had kids that flushing poos bye-bye could be the highlight of your day .

Still no poo here but I've said several times today that if he does a poo in the potty I'll be so surprised that I'll probably fall over. I can see he's tempted!

barney2 · 23/08/2006 22:14

I'm not impressed..............the little madam was going upstairs saying she needed a wee, with me walking behind her and I noticed a little bulge in her knickers......and judging by the aroma it wasn't a rolled up bit of loo paper!!! Was I happy with her??? Errr no but I didn't show it. I simply and easily turned around on the stairs, went back downstairs and called for my husband to take her to the loo for a wee and let him deal with it! Ha Ha!!!

I then went out into the back garden and heard my husband saying 'oh no, you've done a poo in your knickers......' He then returned downstairs and asked if I knew she'd done a poo in her knickers to which I replied 'no, did she?'...

Hee Hee xxxxx

Rosieglow · 23/08/2006 22:48

But did your DH deal with it? Mine would have been off like a shot. He would never change pooey nappies either. DD is 9m and I think he's done about 3 nappies

Reece · 23/08/2006 22:49

But Rosieglow its only Wednesday !!!
Well done Barney2. That siege is over thank goodness says you
I have found that(as Toady said) if I refer to his wee and poo as 'Mr wee wee and Mr poo poo' he likes it and has more of an interest in actually going to the toilet.

He had another dry day today. Well I am classing it as that. He did wet his bed during his nap but he has not napped in months, fell asleep in the car and I didn't want to wake him by putting a pull-up on.
He also did ALL of his wee's standing up and has a great aim . He is sooooo proud of himself for this feat and couldn't wait to show Daddy when he came home what new trick he as learnt to master. It is so much easier for me as well because there is rarely a spill onto toilet, floor or clothes!
Pre-school starts in 1.5 weeks. Lets hope he can keep this up and not regress once he starts back again.

barney2 · 24/08/2006 17:27

Sounds like we're all getting there!!!

Yes my DH did deal with my DD smelly backside yesterday - he's a very hands on Dad fortunately but then I've always said it takes two to make the baby in the first place and he knows better than to run away!!!!

No poo's today.......but had two yesterday so don't expect one till tomorrow. This is a bit like waiting for a parcel delivery isn't it??!!!! I wonder if Royal Mail have ever been compared to poo??!!!

She's been dry all day today and we've been out a fair bit in the car - one journey taking over an hour stuck in traffic and there's me panicking - not because of the traffic or running late but more worried about a smelly soaked car seat!!!

DD has got the start of pre-school on 5 September - I only hope she keeps going till then and not back in pull-ups........

I can safely say this is the hardest most stressful part of having children - first child not a problem, second.....trouble!

Reece · 24/08/2006 18:41

Well it sounds like the wee is really cracked at yours Barney2. Well done to your lo and you

DS was dry all day until he did a wee on the kitchen floor a few mins ago. He was so proud and came shouting to tell me 'mummy Iv'e done a wee wee!' but I didn't show it. Just cleaned it up.
He's been playing up the last hour or so, attacking DS2 again, ramming into him with his ride on car, pushing him over etc so I reckon the wee on the floor episode is jst part and parcel of him wanting to pi** me off.
No poo either today.

barney2 · 24/08/2006 19:16

Poor you Reece! Kids. They do push our patience to the limit don't they!??!! My delightful charming little darling had me taking her to the loo about 8 times this afternoon for a poo and each time I tried to be enthusiastic/supportive etc etc but by about the 6th time I'd had enough of hearing 'no poo mummy'....I can appreciate that its not easy for a child to know when they need to go but to have me take her 8 times is just getting ridiculous, especially as I was trying to cook tea at the same time!

I shall be soooooo glad when this child of mine is at school and everything sorted and then when she gets her first boyfriend....oh boy is he going to know all about it!!! I shall be paying him to take her off my hands....

Rosieglow · 24/08/2006 21:52

Not a great day today. A big poo in his pants while we were at a friends house. And then wet himself playing in the garden. And he'd been really good at wees lately.
I think once he's had one accident he just sort of gives up for the rest of day.
Oh well, tomorrow's another day.

barney2 · 24/08/2006 23:02

Oh dear Rosieglow. I don't think you've got anything to worry about - poo in pants....never mind - this is normal with most kids I think and wee whilst playing - I'd say thats pretty normal cos they can be so busy they simply forget!

Tomorrow is another day.....xxxxx

barney2 · 27/08/2006 19:28

Rosieglow and Reece - how are things going? We've definitely got the wee's sorted out - we can go out and about with DD and she'll go on any loo anywhere!!! BUT!!!....she refuses to sit on the loo to do her poo's and fills her knickers instead. We tell her she ought to do her poo's on the loo and all she does is laugh. Got any ideas anyone???!!!! Got playgroup starting in ten days....help!

Rosieglow · 27/08/2006 21:21

That's our sticking point too. DS has only had one wee accident in the last week so he's doing well there. We have to take him to go regularly & sometimes it's a battle but he seems to hold it all in in between times.

But he absolutely refuses to do a poo in a toilet. We've done all the bribery, cajooling, getting cross, not getting cross we can think of and it's made no difference. We're just going to have to wait for him to do it I think.

No poo today so definitely one tomorrow!

Reece · 27/08/2006 22:17

Hi everyone Sorry haven't posted in a few days and this will be a short one as we have parents over for a few days

DS has no problem doing his poo on the toilet although he also has no problem doing it in his pants either! It wasa toilet last 2 days, pants today. I reckon it depends on what he is doing at the time and what mood he is in.

The wee's were going really well. He will do them on the toilet no problem and has been doing the majority standing!!! I was thinking of taking the potty away for good but he had 1 accident yesterday which made me hold off It was actually on purpose to annoy me as he came running to me telling me what he'd done with a big smile on his face.

More news on Tuesday. Hope you are all ok.

barney2 · 28/08/2006 18:54

mmmmmmmmm.......had a brilliant day today. Been out all day. No wee accidents but plenty of trips to the loo in readiness for a poo. No sign of a poo until an hour ago when she decided to empty her bowels in the bath.....oh well.

Reece · 30/08/2006 08:10

DS has been dry last 2 days. Poo in toilet both days as well
Really pleased.
I am keeping everything crossed that it says like this next week when he stats pre-school. That's when things fell apart the last time.

Barney2 - sounds like DD is trying to do the poo on the toilet/potty she just can't make it happen yet. Don't think it will be long before you have success.
