Hello I have a DD 2.6 and a 9mth DS. My DD is now interested in what boys bits are because she sees them in the bath every day.
What do you call the genetalia with your children?
We've slipped into 'tinky winky' for his little willy but what do you say for a girl? I can't remember having a childhood name for mine!

Yuck

Squarer · 19/07/2006 21:51

That would be love button DG.
In the "work" telephone directory years ago, there was a lady called Joy Button.

harpsichordcarrier · 19/07/2006 21:51

not me, I hasten to add.
guess what I call
oh you'll never guess

I'm sorry but pmsl at Joy Button

Squarer · 19/07/2006 21:53

I know. I used to imagine myself in meetings with her introducing herself. There's no way I wouldn't have spat my coffee out.

tenalady · 19/07/2006 21:54

I see, its all got dirty now

tenalady · 19/07/2006 21:55

Met a girl the other day her name is truly Chelsea Bunn! ffs what were the parents thinking. Anyway, thats for a cleaner thread obviously!

stapo1 · 19/07/2006 22:03

only have boys & always called them Willy's my bits I have just called my Privates (cop out I know).
It doesn't matter when they get to school, they call it Dick, Nuts, Todger & much worse! Much to my disgust,
Never dared ask what they call girl bits at school.

fishmitten · 19/07/2006 22:05

privates - now that is wht we called it! now jsut makes me think of nice fit army men for some reason!

flutterbee · 19/07/2006 22:24

Well I don't give a stuff what any of you think we call boys bits - squig or squiggle and girls bits - front bottom.

My Mum used these names with all 5 of my brothers and my sister and trust me none of us have ever had any hang ups about body parts.

Call them what you want does it really matter?

fishmitten · 19/07/2006 22:27

but waht about harpsi's post 8:19?

flutterbee · 19/07/2006 22:30

Well being embarressed to talk about them was never an issue in our household and trust me you can find disturbing and shocking stories behind pretty much anything nowadays.

bouncyball · 19/07/2006 22:32

Oh my god. over 100 replies over this!!! I can't quite believe it really. No real thought process went into tinky winky just came out as my dd tried to tickle it in the bath and I said " NO we leave his tinky winky alone it belongs to him!". No conscious decision just happened and now its stuck. Can see the argument for proper names to start off with and usually do use proper language to describe things but penis and vulva seem very grown up words to use for a 2 yr old. In most conversation don't give it a name actually just say "Have you wiped yourself?".

Obviously there has been many a discussion about this before but never realised my innocent little muse would bring about such a response. When I asked about how to discuss the dealth of my father with my daughter I had 4 replies. Isn't it funny what people get worked up about and can offer advise about.

In short BB, yes

fishmitten · 19/07/2006 22:46

some psots are jsut more common than others and have been done so many times before. At least it wsa fun, and you choose whatever you are happy wiht. Though I do think it is worth bearing harpsi's comemnts in mind.

harpsichordcarrier · 19/07/2006 22:48

absoutely, make your own mind up.

subliminal message**

tortoise · 19/07/2006 22:51

My sister and i called it a woozel! No idea why.Know a woozel is in winnie the pooh stories though!

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 19/07/2006 22:59

girls 'pinkies' boys 'widgys'

NotQuiteCockney · 20/07/2006 06:53

We say "willy" and "bits" (when we need to discuss women's bits, as it's all boys round here, anyway. Oh, for a while I had a "furry willy", but thankfully that's passed).

I probably should change "bits" to something more direct, but I do think "willy" is clear enough.

(I am a little weirded out by people coming on to ask "my child asked where babies come from! help! help!". I see "where babies come from" as being regular knowledge like "where food comes from" or "how do they make buildings", and as such, DS1 has been aware of the general system for ages.)

earlgrey · 20/07/2006 06:55

Quim or front bottom . No idea for a boy.

alligator · 20/07/2006 10:47

just had to add a bit to this. (just to stir of course)

we do use other names besides the correct names for lots of different parts of the body tho dont we? Tummy for the digestive area, Food pipe rather than oesauphagus (sp?), wind pipe, funny bone, gullet (Mammy HATED us saying that), belly (she didnt like that either) and so on and so forth. Doesnt give us hang ups about those areas tho or does it?

housemum · 20/07/2006 11:31

My nan & mum used to refer to a "Looloo" which was not a good thing when you consider I was a kid in the 70's and Lulu was on telly a lot.

My best friend was the first person I'd heard use the word "noonoo" (she didn't have kids then, so I made sure I bought her a "Friction Noonoo" for Xmas - from Toys R Us, not Ann Summers!)

We tend to cop out by using "bits" or just generally referring to "bottom" (front or back as appropriate)

housemum · 20/07/2006 11:36

Not sure why I'm telling you this, other than lack of sleep. DD2 likes to rub her tummy, saw her the other day with hand heading further south. I asked why she was doing that, and she said "cos it feels soooo nice", as well as saying she was rubbing her woolly (can't say willy) - pointed out that girls don't have a willy, and she said "but I can feel one in here...!"

What with that and the fact that she pole-dances around the post office queuing system I think I'd best send her to a convent or something...

Squarer · 20/07/2006 11:36

I remember now.... Tail!!! My mum used to call mine my tail!!

Hmmm. Perhaps I should have had issues with that actually
