Hello I have a DD 2.6 and a 9mth DS. My DD is now interested in what boys bits are because she sees them in the bath every day.
What do you call the genetalia with your children?
We've slipped into 'tinky winky' for his little willy but what do you say for a girl? I can't remember having a childhood name for mine!

honestly, I think we should call all the parts of the body cutesy names.
ideally after teletubbies characters. that'll confuse the medics
so where's the pain, Mrs Harpsichordcarrier?
It's is my, you know, dipsy

Overrun · 19/07/2006 20:09

Jazzi, I agree with you about "the gash", I guess they do just copy their dads, my dh, just mumbles something vaque whenever the subject comes up. It is left up to me to answer all awkward questions

foof is patently ridiculous. It's really depressing that people turn up to antenatal classes full of such nonsense - makes you wonder how on earth they managed to get up the duff in the first place. Dumb luck maybe

no I'm not sure I can cope with vulva, but really there's no choice. I don't mind willy though

harpsichordcarrier · 19/07/2006 20:11

seriously, ladies, what if (god forbid) your dd's ever need to mention their vulva to a teacher or another parent.
have you considered that the other adult won't know what they mean?

MrsJohnCusack · 19/07/2006 20:12

oh dear I really do seem to have a rum turn of phrase this evening. don't mind willy indeed....

Overrun · 19/07/2006 20:12

Yep, Mrs Jc wins! Mind you is that Micheal Bolton with long or short hair?

Kelly1978 · 19/07/2006 20:12

MrsJohnCusack · 19/07/2006 20:12

no I promise I'm going for vulva harpsi, because I don't like all the silly words

Kelly1978 · 19/07/2006 20:13

harpsi, never quite understood that arguement, even though I don't like silly names; surely they could point?

MrsJohnCusack · 19/07/2006 20:13

well, he doesn't look quite as much like JOhn Cusack as he did

mind you, neither does John Cusack...

mustrunmore · 19/07/2006 20:14

Long Dont do short haired men, so to speak

YeahBut · 19/07/2006 20:14

I'm with Harpsi on this 100%. They're going to hear pretty revolting terms for parts of their body in the playground. Do them a favour and give them the correct vocabulary.

spidermama · 19/07/2006 20:17

Willy and fanny.
They now also know about penis, vagina and vulva. My dd has an accurate knowlege of the anatomical difference between the two v's. (She's 8)

I wasn't going to tell her just yet but the school, unbeknownst to me, have been teaching these things. They taught her the word 'vagina' so - and Harpsi you'll be proud of me - I had to point out that the word only describes the 'tunnel' and the rest is called the vulva.

harpsichordcarrier · 19/07/2006 20:19

Kelly, because they are embarrassed, because they have picked up that it isn't something to be talked about, maybe?. I was involved in a case once where a young girl had told her teacher that her uncle (iirc) was touching her canary. the teacher had no idea of the significance of this for a long time, until the abuse was detected another way.
(sorry don't mean to put a downer and god forbdi anyone's child would need to have that sort of conversation)

harpsichordcarrier · 19/07/2006 20:21

spidermama - the vagina is the only part of the body with two different names, depending on which direction you're travelling.
vagina on the way up
birth canal on the way down
