This is minus Cod's expert advice at the moment as she's busy (see boot camp thread)
We've been going a week (ds is 2.4) and he's doing ok I think. Had a poo in the potty last night - first (in the right place) of the week! and and an all dry day on Friday - Grin Weekend was not so good as we were visiting people both days but he was still pretty good considering. How is everyone else doing?

got woken up at 5am 'muuuuummy muuuuuummy' - normally i ignore them till 6am but i did hear the word 'potty' thrown in! so tough decision: do i tell him to go in his nappy or get up, hmmmmmm ....
well, i did get up and got a wee+poo in the potty!

i did try to go back to bed but he kept standing next to my bed and telling me all sort of things!!!! and 5 min later he asked for potty again
i was up rather quickly and good it was - got another poo in the toilet that time!!

'sigh'

We just got our first poo in the loo!!!! I'm so excited - I had just stripped DD2 as she had done a small poo in her pants. I was coming back with a change when she started to push again and told me she had a poo coming. We rushed to the loo and voila!!! She got very excited when she did it and of course had to have a good look at it before any loo paper went in on top. She then got to ring the toilet bell for an extra long time as she had done poos and not just wees (the toilet bell is an old dinner bell I had hanging around that she is now allowed to ring whenever she goes)- she also got a snake to celebrate. Hopefully we are turning the corner!!!

gladbag · 19/07/2006 08:36

I'm starting today - can I join? Ds 2.6 - he's been using the potty and big loo in the mornings and evenings for a while, with some success, but this is the big push, so to speak

Had 2 wees on the potty so far this morning.....Will be spending the next few days around the house and in the garden. Starting off bare bottomed, as so far he's refused to wear pants, say they hurt his willy.....(anyone else had the same problem?!) Will cross that bridge later in the week, I think.

kiera · 19/07/2006 11:11

Hi everyone, how has it been going today so far?

Thanks iwearflairs for your encouragement well done pippigirl and susieS.

Well we're on day 3 now. No poos yet today and he's been up since 4.30am We're getting plenty of wees in the toilet but he seems to most times do a little trickle then ask to go, is anyone else getting this? It's not all the time though...he doesn't seem to realise until he has actually started to wee and he's 33 1/2 months...it's early days though I suppose?

Keeping him naked from the waist down and a short T-shirt so he is more aware if he does a little puddle. Sitting him on a towel with plastic bag under if sitting on sofa or his chair where he eats! I am putting nappy back on for naps though as he soaked himself yesterday while sleeping.

Must say I am pleased about how positive he is being about it just finding it v hard work at 7 months pregnant esp in this hot weather, I am very big already, can't stand up for more then a few secs, so I hope we crack it soon...

I think you've had beginners luck for day1 - all wees in the potty (one potty-full knocked over....) and one poo on the big loo, all independently. I did put his pants on half way through the morning, as he was doing so well, but he just sat on his potty and weed through them () so we'll work on pants later in the week. Chocolate buttons prooving a great incentive, and we've watched far too many dvds today (was actually raining, rather than the heat wave the rest of the country seems to be having) which has helped. He also had a dry nappy after his nap for the first time ever, so that was great. We'll see what tomorrow brings....

When did you all venture out of the house? I'm dreading it.

kiera · 20/07/2006 07:51

Morning all

Well done gladbag and iwearflairs!

Well we have to go out today as I have an antenatal appointment - eeek! I am taking 3 changes of pants and shorts, a potty, a roll of kitchen towel and a big pack of wipes!!! And it's only a 10 minute walk away fom home, lol. It's just that ds is due a big poo, didn't do one all day yesterday, and he'll have to wear pants to go out, so the combination could be disastrous! Tomorrow I want to take him to soft play which is a 20 min car ride so that could be interesting. We have to get out of the house tho' I'm going stir crazy in here!

Is anyone else finding this as stressful as me? I get really anxious about getting poo everywhere with all the bacteria etc, I just can't help it, and I've gone completely off my food which I do when I'm worried about something. Maybe ds is picking up on the vibes...

SusiS · 20/07/2006 08:40

morning! you go girls
and oh yes!! i too found it very exhausting!!!

i did go out on the day 2 already
chose an outdoor event though i wasn't too bothered if he'd wet himself (a nearby animal farm!) - and of course he had a couple of accidents in his pants but hey, it dried off really quickly - and he managed to do a wee in his potty too.

persistance is the key!

after getting up today i've put him straight onto the toilet and got a wee.
a minute later he himself (!) sat back on again and did a poo

and re pants: he went naked for about 3-4 days; couldn't be bothered with pants just then! one step after another ....

he's doing so well now and i am very proud of him!!! we've just have to get him to do his own pants

gladbag · 20/07/2006 08:52

Morning!
kiera- you sound very organised - hope the appointment goes smoothly, for you both . And SusiS - that's a great start to the day, hope the rest keeps going well.

We've got another morning at home, then we've got a couple of toddlers and mums visiting us this afternoon. Not sure how ds will cope with so much going on, but we'll see. I was hoping it would be drier today so we could spend most of the time in the garden, but more rain this morning....

I made a mad dash to Tescos yesterday (was desperate) with ds in shorts and pants. We survived with no accidents, but I've never whizzed round so fast! I think we were back home in under 15 minutes. Think I might do the beach tomorrow, if the weather clears up, as accidents won't be such an issue (and we need to get out of the house lol)

kiera · 20/07/2006 09:57

SusiS - sounds like he's doing really well!
gladbag - good luck with the visitors! glad you made it round tesco's ok - I am giving dh lists of shopping to bring home atm - it's like we're living under siege or something!

well ds has just done another poo on the floor he seems to be getting it with the wees but the poos just come out without him even seeming to realise it. i'm torn between getting him some pull-ups for when we're out of the house and gritting my teeth and sticking to pants in the hope that he will learn from wet/dirty clothes. what are you doing?

K

pippygirl · 20/07/2006 10:07

Another good day today. Went out with a pull-up on as we had to go for dental checks (didn't think he'd appreciate a puddle on the floor) but she was ok. She went for me on the loo afterwards at the park and then didn't need to go again but she did fall asleep in the car and she had done a small wee in her pull-ups when we got home but she sat on the loo straight away for me when we got home and gone a couple of times since then. So far today no poos so I'll have to monitor that to make sure she is not hanging on. By the way I am sooooo jealous of all of you up in the UK as at least it's so hot and good for no knickers - not like winter in Australia!!!!

Helennn · 20/07/2006 10:53

Hope you don't mind me butting in - have been half-heartedly potty training DD1, (aged just 2). She knew she needed to go for a wee but would not sit on her potty to do it so just kept trying it for a bit every day, (have DS1 to take to school etc. so not consistent I know).

Anyway, what I mainly wanted to say was that on Monday we went to a friend's house where another little girl was happily sitting on the potty going for a wee - and when we got home my little girl just sat on hers, (with training pants on), and went for a wee. She then did about 6 little wees in the next hour!! HOOOORAY

So, if you know anybody who is further on in the potty training marathon perhaps a visit would be a good idea, so you can all admire how clever their little one is. Who knows what might come of it!!!!!!!!

By the way - what is the best way to get poo out of the carpet??

kiera · 20/07/2006 13:19

pippy - I wish we could swap places, I can't stand this heat! dh loves it though, I reckon he must have roman blood in him while mine is scandinavian...he also loves italy while my dream is to go to the scandinavian countries...glad to hear things are going well.

helen - about the poo - I don't know, I've been lucky enough that all poos have landed on the bathroom floor so far! I would say soapy water and a sponge followed by some antibacterial spray? Let us know if you come up with some good tips, it's only a matter of time before it happens to me I'm sure!

kiera · 20/07/2006 16:18

iwearflairs - I'm starting off with ds sitting for everything as their aim is not very good at this age. although I'm sure at some stage he will want to be like daddy...

well we've not had a great day today as when I went out for my antenatal ds announced that he wanted to nap so i put a nappy on knowing that if he went to sleep he would wet himself, well he was wide awake the whole time so I may as well have put him in pants. but he did nap on the sofa when we got home, i woke him up an hour ago but as he was still sleepy i kept the nappy on until just now.

i find that if I ask if he wants to go he always says no and will only go when HE asks to, neither will he stay on there more than a few secs and he has lost interest in books atm. so i can't get him to go after meals or before/after naps and outings...typical independent 3 year old...so I am hoping he will just learn from his mistakes and figure it out himself!

hello again. ds has had nappy off since his nap and doing really well at asking to go to the toilet for wees at least...tomorrow we are going to soft play so he has to wear pants and shorts so we'll get to see how he copes with pants and distractions and also a 15-20 minute ride each way in the car... just hope i can keep him out of the ball pit in case of accidents lol - he had a pooey nappy leak in there once and they had to empty the whole thing and wash all the balls so please keep your fingers crossed for us!

gladbag · 20/07/2006 20:34

Well...... after yesterday's successess, today wasn't so great. Ds has definately got the hang of using potty/loo when naked on his bottom half, but put him in a pair of pants and the whole thing falls apart . He had a great morning (pantless), no accidents etc, so decided to put in pants this afternoon and we got through 3 pairs with 3 puddles.
Will keep it up tomorrow and see if there's any improvement. I'm really pleased that he's actually wearing the pants, as he refused initially, so I'm focusing on that being a major achievement, and hoping the rest will gradually follow.

Good luck at soft play, kiera - you're a braver woman than I, lol. Hope your ds has a great time.

SusiS · 20/07/2006 20:52

woheyyy no accidents!!! not even at nursery - and good it was because (as usual) i did take the changing bag but didn't leave it
dry nap too! and even another poo in the afternoon!!!!
i think he's got it

still lots of reminding but hey, no nappiiiiiiies

kiera · 20/07/2006 21:35

wa-hay! way to go, SusieS!

gladbag - good for you at persevering with the pants, I think that's the way to go, just grit your teeth and hope they get it eventually! we got loads of puddles on day 1 naked so I know it's going to take time again to get used to the pants. I bought 22 pairs from Mothercare on Monday, do you think that's a bit excessive? dh does, lol!!!

aragon · 20/07/2006 21:41

Sorry if this has already been covered. DS aged 3.5 has been dry for ages but still wants a nappy for poohing in. Now I am not overly anxious as I am sure that once he is 15 it will have passed . However, is there anything I can do to help him progress. I am well versed in the idea of toddlers having the idea of not wanting to let go and not liking the feel of the feel of the pooh falling away etc. I don't want to force the issue but should I justlet matters lie and await the day he'll decide that "nappies are for babies" or should I be more pro-active?

SusiS · 20/07/2006 21:41

lol kiera - i think i got more (but you will need it!!!)

the first week was very tough!! lots of accidents but i tried to stay supportive.
i did put him onto this potty regularly though - luckily he wasn't bothered! - all naked for the first 3-4 days.
then he sort of got it and i put him into pants. oh boy, back to square one!!! lots of accidents.
took another 3-4 days till things started to improve! - but from then on every day got better and better.
i never put a nappy on him (apart nighttime) - i did have the odd wet bed after a nap (but i think only 3 times in all the 3 weeks)
i took the potty everywhere!! and did ask alot alot alot - untill one day he sort of protested and i sat back a little bit. and he got better again

now i still ask him but only if i think he really is due one soon. and sometimes he even asks for it...

so don't give up!! patience and lots of chocolate raisins

kiera · 21/07/2006 12:48

how are we all doing today?

ds left his morning turd on the kitchen floor this morning....but we did manage to get out to soft play this morning, this is his first day in pants (day 5 of PT). He wet himself an hour after we got there, probably too distracted by the toys, changed him into dry pants and he remembered to ask the next time and only left a little dribble in them we also survived the car journey and walk there and bac unscathed although I did put a plastic bag and towel on the seat just in case. Feeling much encouraged.

aragon - my SIL had same problem - she just persevered and made her ds sit on the loo till he pooed in the end and after that he was much better. Another alternative is to put him on he potty with nappy on, then for next poo loosen nappy, then for next one loosen it some more, finally nappy is lying in potty and gradually remove it. Your ds might be a bit big for a potty tho' and I would imagine a nappy would fall through a trainer seat!
