This is minus Cod's expert advice at the moment as she's busy (see boot camp thread)
We've been going a week (ds is 2.4) and he's doing ok I think. Had a poo in the potty last night - first (in the right place) of the week! and and an all dry day on Friday - Grin Weekend was not so good as we were visiting people both days but he was still pretty good considering. How is everyone else doing?

Well I am feeling like giving up at the moment - might start another thread as I'm kind of lost on this one as to who is up to where.
I started with ds2 just over a week ago - he is 2.8 and has been asking for big boy pants for weeks and weeks.
it has not been a great success - he is still doing lots of accidents per day (4 yesterday) although he is also doing lots of wees in the potty and will occasionally initiate going. But he seems to need to wee at least every 45 minutes and making him do a wee doesn't mean he won't have an accident 30 minutes later....
This is really not practical to maintain - can't really trust him to go out for even 10 minutes.
Shall I give up and try again in a few months?

6 pairs of pants,5 pairs of shorts,4 t-shirts, 2 pairs of socks! all today. what more can i say! This from the child that managed to go most of last week completly dry. When will he learn to ask/tell me he needs to go? aarrghhh

elliott · 08/08/2006 09:38

justamum, you have my sympathies! With ds1 it was absolutely ages before he would 'ask' to go - months and months, maybe even a year - but if I made sure he went every hour or so he was usually ok. I'm afraid he is still not 100% (at nearly 5!) I did find that encouraging him to drink a lot helped - by getting him used to the sensation of a full bladder - but this was much later on.

Hi can I join in to?

I am desperately trying to potty train my little man and he wont have any of it. That would be fine if he wasnt ready but he is as he wont wear his nappies and keeps pooing on the floor whe he needs to go!

My HV says hes just being lazy but im lost I dont know what to do next

Hello - can I join too - have just sat nearly weeing myself with everyone's stories - soooo nice to know everyone else is wiping poo & wee up all round the place!!

We've (DS 2.6) been wearing big pants for 10 days or so - he's been slowly improving, and is now asking for the potty occassionally, and usually performing when I remind him/notice he's clutching his tackle... Luckily, he's been pretty good about poos - most of our accidents are liquid...(he is a GREAT fruit eater - so his poos do exit at a scary speed - sorry if TMI!!)

Had our first all day/clean day yesterday - very very exciting!!
Not such a great day today as he was at the childminders from 9:30-3:30 and in that time only did one wee (on potty) & one poo (in pants - hurray for someone else having to deal with it!!!) Which meant he then needed two wees once he got home - 1 of which was in his high chair - d'oh!

I know that the real answer is 'it depends' but can anyone give me an idea of how long this is going to take??? I've been trying to stay in as much as poss/only heading out just after wees - and am going totally stir crazy!!

justamum · 09/08/2006 22:42

elliot , i am going to try your getting him to drink a lot idea as we are just going backwards with the weeing now. He seems to be mostly ok with poos but he wees more often that it has been occuring to me to ask- i was going for once an hour but he did it 3times in one hour this evening, luckily being a slob i hadn't actually dressed him from the first time so the sofa got the brunt of it (thank god for wipe clean leather)
i am running out of ideas how to deal with it now, i've just read anothe thread with cod's advice about sweets but i know i'd end up in a screaming match about wanting more and how do you stop when you start that?
georgeandharvey-put him in pants, they quite like that mostly cos they can feel their bits easier, then at least the poo is contained amd pants from asda etc barely cost much more than nappies so it doesn't matter if you chuck a few pairs away.
this is so frustrating, I really wish i'd left it another couple of months but i am back at work in November and wanted it done by the end of the summer

Hi all,

I started training DS at Easter, he was doing really well (after struggling for the first week or so) for about a month, then he got chicken pox. Since then we've only had a couple of good weeks where he's only had occasional accidents, and more often then not he's really bad, even standing beside the potty and just full-flow peeing his pants.

DH wants us to start putting him on the naughty seat if he wets anywhere but the potty, my mum (who looks after him 4 days a week while I'm at work) thinks this is a BAD idea, as he will associate potty with battles and punishment.

What do you think? I asked DS this week if he wants me to put his big-boy pants away and put him back in nappies, he said not. He was 2 at the end of April.

(We use training pants when we go out, over the top of his knickers, so he feels the wet, but we have dry car seats)

GeordieVik · 12/08/2006 09:52

oh, and he gets a potty sweetie and a moderate amount of praise when he does go in the potty (we toned down praise from rounds of applause & cheers when I read that maybe too much praise was putting pressure on him to perform)

Why is it so bl**dy difficult?
