This is minus Cod's expert advice at the moment as she's busy (see boot camp thread)
We've been going a week (ds is 2.4) and he's doing ok I think. Had a poo in the potty last night - first (in the right place) of the week! and and an all dry day on Friday - Grin Weekend was not so good as we were visiting people both days but he was still pretty good considering. How is everyone else doing?

did that make sense????!?!?!?

Another thread-crasher...

Just wanted to say to Cmac, that I am in same situ as you and ponka (DS1 is 2.5, DS2 is 16 wks and is breastfed) but was convinced DS1 was ready, although potty/pants averse, and started PT last Weds (Cod method). Very hard work for first few days, and poor DS2 got ignored a lot, but by day 4 DS1 had got the idea, and now only has accidents if I can't accommodate his potty needs quite in time (like in the high street this morning). I would definitely go for it with DH around, it might only take a week. Good luck!

SusiS · 13/07/2006 21:23

we had another dry nap 'woheyyy' and a slight accident whilst running around with the neighbours kids outside. i did ask him a few times because i knew he'd be too busy. but i was also busy getting dinner ready so i missed it! oh well, pants changed and next was on the potty again - will have to try him on our toilet!!

Thanks Spiker - i'm getting myself all psyched up now! Will have to go on a mammoth pants buying spree. how many pairs do you think i'll need? Reading some of these posts it looks like i'll need far more than I was expecting! Will no doubt be back on MN for advice in a couple of weeks time.

SusiS · 14/07/2006 19:11

day 15: morning was allright - no accidents. took both kids to our forest with playground. he actually asked (!) for the potty and did a wee!!!!

came home and had an accident 'sigh' - another one later. and when dp ran the bath and put him in he started a poo
but dp was calm and asked him if he wanted to use the toilet instead. YES! - so he did!!! - sat on the toilet (quite proudly ) - and finished his poo!!!! (got some chocolate for it) - did a tiny wee too (just to get some more chocolate!!) - but hey, another step in the right direction!!!!

sockmonkey · 14/07/2006 20:09

Well, last time I said we had cracked it, we had 2 accidents in the same day, but this time I think we really have. No acidents now for well over a week, and he will take himself off to the loo now without being asked. Maybe it's cos DS1 is a bit older than most he seems to have got it faster.... cue lots of accidents tomorrow now I've said that!!

FrayedKnot · 14/07/2006 21:36

Can I join please?!

DS chose some Thomas & Noddy pants yesterday ready for us to start on Monday but insisted on wearing them to nursery this morning. I forgot to tell DH, who was picking him up, so by the time I got back home tonight, he was soaking and DH hadn;t even noticed (duh)!

Anyway, he got through nursery with no accidents, so I think we're away.

He's 2.4 BTW.

SusiS · 15/07/2006 19:16

day 15 and i am very proud of ds!!!!!!

morning was good; only 1 accident - but he did ask for the potty; just too late
AND he sat on our toilet!!!!!!!!! (he was scared of it so far although we've got a special kiddies seat - so well pleased)

he did wet his bed during his nap though; but hey: happened only 3 times in all 15 days!

then we went out to a park with playground and pond and everything - so lots of excitiment!
still every time i asked him he was 100% spot on!
instead of putting him on his potty i just stood him towards a tree and he did his wee that way

then again at the restaurant he went to the toilet with me and sat down there - even without the kiddies seat

AND he had the runs all day and only 1 very tiny accident! but he did repeatedly ask for the potty -especially if it was a poo!!
so i am well pleased with him

sockmonkey · 15/07/2006 21:10

SusiS that's great! i bet you are proud.

pippygirl · 16/07/2006 01:24

New to site so please forgive any mistakes etc. I have a DD who is 3years 3months old. We have been slow to train as I have been unwell for about 2 years and only feel strong enough now to tackle it. Started last week with just knickers and had the gentle "it doesn't matter" approach (that all the sites tell you to do) if there was an accident. Now, she has adopted this into her psychy with tell us oh well, no big deal if she has an accident and doesn't seem to even be bothered by wet/dirty knickers. She can also hold on for ages which doesn't help. We can only get her on if we REALLY bribe her (ie stickers dont work) and even then it is a struggle - I have quite a bit of guilt as I figure if I hadn't been unwell then we would have trained earlier and it wouldn't be such an issue for her. Anyone got some ideas???

SusiS · 16/07/2006 06:56

don't feel guilty! everyone in their own time; and it's important that you are ready too!!

well, it's always a difficult one. they are all so different!

does she use the potty/toilet at all?? that's already a big step.
any chance to let her be naked? - helped us to actually get ds to realise to use the potty!
i gave him a few days to 'adjust' but then i got 'crosser' by the day! after a week or so i did tell him off for weeing on the floor or pants!! and asked him what he should have done instead (where does the wee go?? and not where ..?) - and yours is older so she should understand even better i guess!
he also got/gets treats but only 2 small chocolate raisins and mostly he actually forgets about it (i leave them out now unless he remembers and asks for it!)
i've got a 'potty bag' always and everywhere with us (spare pants/shorts, wipes, potty!)
first few days i did put him on it every 30min, then every hour - you have to find out how long she takes in between and when you think she needs one!
and try to know when she has her poo and put her on till it's done (sit with her with a book, or sing, or draw, or watch tv - whatever makes her stay) - and then of course the BIG potty dance afterwards

well, what else? it got better on day 8 or 9 i think. i got off his case and stopped asking permanently (because he started to resent the potty ) - so i only asked about every other hour (you realise the times she needs to go more often though) - that worked great!
we are on day 16 now and if i ask him i ask so long till he gives me a deffinite yes/no! and it's 100% lately
if i think he hasn't been for too long i do remind him. he's not that good yet with going on his own!
although the last 2 days he's improved!!
first he told me 'potty' but was too late
he's fab with his poo now and always catches it in the potty on his own!! -
AND also the last 2 days he actually uses the toilet!!!! we've got a kids seat at home with a step and no problem there! and he even asked for it too. - we went out yesterday and after being asked he said yes to a wee. and i just stood him to a tree, held him slightly bend forwards and woheyyy - he did it!!
and then in the restaurant i asked again and off we went to the toilet. no seat, i just held him and woheeyy, another one!!
it does work - but it's hard work and quite exhausting - but so worth it in the end

all we need to crack now is for him to take his own pants off and on again

SusiS · 16/07/2006 06:56

oops, didn't mean to write a whole book!!!

hmm, maybe i could make money with this

i am in awe myself

FrayedKnot · 16/07/2006 20:27

Hi all!

Can't believe we have just done Day 3

One or two accidents at home, mianly due to me or DH forgetting to ask him

Have been out to the park today for a couple of hours (chose teh one where there are public toilets), which went fine.

We have also abandoned nappies except for at night.

Rubineski · 16/07/2006 21:51

Hi. Can I join please?

DS is nearly 3. Have been leading up to this for ages.

last Monday decided to go for it and...would you believe it...the washing machine broke down!!!!!!

So i took it as a sign that the time wasn't right. DS on the other hand, had decided that it was perfect timing and is soooo in love with his 'big boy pants'. So we carried on.

Thankfully neighbours are helping out with washing. Repair man not due until tomorrow morning!!

Anyway, my big problem is that DS is fine with wees. Does in potty and on loo. But poos - well, he does them in his pants every time.

have a chart full of stickers. Have smarties on the go for those extra special times. Have sat with him for AGES, trying to distract him at the right time of the day, so he will go.

but he's obviously freaked by it. Have talked about poos loads - he's seen his friends and me do them.

he says it hurts but i suppose it's just a different feeling for him.

What can i do? Any tips? Does it get better???????

bozzy · 17/07/2006 14:13

Hello, back again. Had been going well with potty training but it is because my son holds on while we are out - ok if we are out for the morning but he refuses to go on a travel potty or on his toilet seat in any public toilet! Any ideas?? We are going on an 8 hour car journey soon and I don't think he will hold on that long!

bozzy · 17/07/2006 14:26

susis, you said your son did it outside next to a tree - has he ever peed at home standing up? The reason I ask is (as you will see from last posting) my DS refuses to pee away from home!

SusiS · 17/07/2006 15:36

bozzy: never standing up!!! (unless watching himself weeing his pants )
i asked him as usual and he said 'yes' - so i just took him to the tree, pulled down his pants/short and well, let him hold on to me and push him bum out iykwim
i was so impressed myself
and he wasn't bothered at all!!

bozzy · 17/07/2006 20:42

Oh I see SusiS! It is just that my friend's son now pees standing up (very soon after being potty trained) so I wondered if there was a trick! I am so worried about our 8 our journey as I don't want him to hang on that long!!!

pippygirl · 18/07/2006 03:50

Thanks SusiS for your comments. Well we are just going for it. Have stopped all this "don't prompt them - let them do it for themselves" and are taking when she needs to go - we have come up with resistance sometimes and no resistance others. I took her and DD1 to MacDonalds yesterday and put her in knickers - took everything spare with me 4 X knickers/trousers etc and a big roll of paper towel just in case and she was ok - no accidents - but I had put her on before we left. Even managed to put her on the loo at Maccas - feeling a little bit more comfortable now and realise that if we need to go out she can still wear knickers - we'll just deal with the circumstances. I'll give an update on our progress in the next couple of days. Thanks

Hi everyone and good luck with your PT!

Can I join you?

Ds turns 3 at the end of August but has to be dry for preschool (first week in September) also I am expecting a baby mid-September so want to have it cracked by then. We're on day 2.

Day 1 - started mid-afternoon after a trip to Mothercare to buy trainer seats and pants. ds initially unenthusiastic about abandoning nappies but seems motivated by going on the toilet and likes the trainer seats I bought. also keen on using kandoo soap and wipes I bought for added motivation! one proper wee in the loo, otherwise lots of puddles on the floor...

Day 2 - 2 poos on the floor, lots of puddles, but managed to get one poo in the loo. ds seems positive. wore pants this afternoon as playing in neighbours garden and wanted to protect his "bits" from the sun - one wet pair followed by trip to toilet otherwise dry. lots of trips to the loo at home with no result as he wants to play at wiping his bum and washing his hands! is this good or bad, bearing in mind the waste of wipes, soap and water??

Ds is having a great time discovering his willy though! lol

How do you think we're doing?

K

tamsino · 18/07/2006 18:58

keira - if he is interested then let him wash his hands as much as he likes. sounds like he is into it and the actual toiletting should come.

iwearflairs - i started with stickers and then went onto choc buttons and then smarties (a big bag is cheaper). Now DD only asks for a sweet every other wee and i dont remind her if she forgets. Today it was every 2nd wee so i guess the novelty just wears off.

My DD has only had 2 accidents in the last week so i'm oretty pleased.
