right

  1. this is for any kid over hte age of 2
  2. imo the best age ie 2 - 2.5
  3. there is NO going bakc
do not start if oyu are going ot poof out
  1. remmeber it is hard work - hence hte training - yes life will be more difficult for a couple of weeks
  2. do NOT use pull ups for day time naps or anythin short of a 2 hour journey
  3. night training is a wholey seperate issue

Twirl - I can't advise you on if it's too early as my ds has just turned 3 so I can have a proper conversation about it with him.

I just wanted to tell you that it's quite normal for accidents at the start, even my ds would just stand there and let me know he was wet after.

I'm a childminder and look after several other children so potty/toilet training went downhill during the week - lack of concentration. Since it's been just the family again, he's been MUCH better.

Here is my daily record since starting last Saturday (just to reassure you):

Day 1

1 tiny poo in potty (size of malteser)
Went out and playing in garden excited – 2 accidents (wees)
Another accident at home (wee) on sofa (little)

Day 2

1 accident on sofa (wee)
1 wee in potty
Another accident (wee)
Another accident (tiny wee – not long after previous one)

Day 3

1 accident whilst playing on floor (wee)
Another accident (wee)
Tiny accident on floor (wee)
3 wees in potty
Accident (wee)
Accident (wee)
Accident (huge poo in pants & wee) – doesn’t want to poo on potty as worried will make mess on floor
Accident (wee)

Day 4

Wee on potty (started off weeing in pants but finished and got lots in potty)
Wee on potty (tiny one to show off to friend)
Wee on potty (big! I asked to sit on when mindee in bumbo for lunch!)
Wee in pants/on carpet (whilst holding poo in)
Poo’d in pants (soon after)
Wee on potty

Day 5

3 wees in pants/on carpet/sofa etc

Day 6

Wee upstairs on carpet
Wee in potty (pretending to push spider out of bottom)
Wee in potty (pretending same)

Day 7

Wee in potty (by himself, me and dh upstairs)
Wee in potty (on sofa eating lolly and jumped off saying needed a wee)
Poo on potty (by himself then shouted surprise)
Wee in potty (by himself)
Wee in potty (little – by himself)
Wee in potty (little – by himself)
1 wee accident (playing with daddy and bit over excited)
Wee in potty (little – by himself)
Wee in potty (little – by himself)
3 tiny wees on toilet (novelty, kept wanting to try again) with softie seat

Day 8

Wee on toilet
1 wee accident (in pants/carpet)
Wee in potty
Poo in potty
Wee in toilet
Wee on potty (at friends house)
1 wee accident getting ready for bed

Day 8

Wee on potty
2 Tiny wees on potty (when trying to do poo for an Easter egg)
Wee on potty
Wee on potty
Wee on toilet

If she's showing signs of being ready then I would keep at it as they seem to just 'click' when they are ready. She does seem young still so don't be too upset if she's not quite ready!

Best of luck :)

oh no cod, i think after all these boot camps you're pretty much an mn expert. i know you don;t do hugs and appreication lol but you and this thread kept me sane thorugh this. thanks! (and i hope the support continues over this week!!!)

looneytune · 16/04/2006 19:56

Totally agree with ALBS :)

alittlebitshy · 16/04/2006 20:11

loon - at least i'm not the only mad one keeping a record of potty action.

seriously once i've cleaned dd and potty up and rewarded her i then dash to my notepad to record the action. lol. helps me see where we;re going. did it for first few weeks of breastfeeding too. am crazy!!!

knat · 16/04/2006 20:12

blueteddy i've had the same with my dd with the pooing - she gets realy upset if she needs to poo and tries to stop it coming (and can succeed!) and then does one in her nightime nappy before she goes to bed. However, last few days we've had poos in the potty and she's not got upset about it and hasn't leapt off th epotty as the poo comes!!! I decided that the best way was to let her knwo its good to poo ( whether in pants or potty!) so she just poos and tell her she's a good girl for pooing and next time try to poo in potty. It's taken quite a while for this to work (been at about 3 months in total) and if I see her trying to poo i try to ignore it and not worry about putting her on the potty just to get her to poo and then when she does poo she looks at it and tells em to clean her up and flush the poo away!!! She nwo seems a little mroe comfortable with the whole poo thing now!!! Sorry if tmi.

alex8 · 16/04/2006 20:26

am pretty close to giving up and doing it again in the summer. Its been nearly 2 weeks now and it has not really clicked at all. I was at work today and found later he had done another poo in pants and whilst being changed had wet himself too. He has done about 5 poos in the toilet since we started it all and lots of wees but at least 2 accidents a day and there has been very little progression since day 4. I did stay in for first 2 days and I do use pants and star charts and chocolate button rewards. Everyone here has clicked after a week so maybe hes not ready but he said he doesn't want nappies. But he has never really told us hes needs to go, its only us spotting the signs. He has told us after or during and once he did manage to hold it in. Am so fed up. I wanted him to have several months gaining confidence before starting school nursery in september where they don't help them much.

The only things thats stopping me giving up is thinking it might be just this bad again when I do start again.

looneytune · 16/04/2006 20:31

ALBS - I've found it really useful keeping a note and if I have bad days, I'll just refer to show what he can do and keep at it!!

Alex8 - how old? Sounds like they are ready if not wanting nappies, some just take a little longer than others and I'd say as you've already put this much hard work into it, try and keep going. We'll be here to support you :)

alittlebitshy · 16/04/2006 20:33

alex8- is he upset by the accidents? if not, then that's your cue to keep at it. I was getting really upset earlier in the week, but dd wasn't too bad, so it was not right for me to stop cos i found it uncomfortable. when we weren't getting there ealier in the week i thought about what would it mean if i stopped and like you i realised that it would be harder next tine especially if she remembered i had stopped once so she might think she could get her own way by it not working....

I was texting a friend who did her son last year. he was a bit older than my dd when she did him, so over 3, and she said it took about 2 weeks for poos to "click" and a month for wees, and about 3 months for him to reliably tell her etc. although that sounds horrifically long, take heart, it can happen even if it takes longer than you hope!!!

if you can bear at it try and keep at it, we'll all suport you here - promise
xx

alex8 · 16/04/2006 20:47

thanks everyone. Hes 2 yrs 10 months. I did have a friend who gave up after a few days, tried again in 2 months and she got it in 2 days then! But also have a friend who perservered and her son got it after 2-3 weeks.

Hes not upset by the poos but maybe a little by the wees. He mostly doesn't even tell us about the poos.

Am just dreading a day out tomorrow.

puff · 16/04/2006 20:51

alex - I'd suggest giving it another 5 to 7 days. If you can't see a light at the end of the tunnel by then, then ditch and try again in a couple of months.

looneytune · 16/04/2006 21:03

I agree to give it another week! :)

Keep coming for support - they're a great lot! :)

cod · 16/04/2006 21:14

Twirl · 16/04/2006 23:07

Thanks for the advice Cod and Loonytune... think I'm going to abandon the potty as she is perhaps a bit too young. See you at the next boot camp!!!
Can't wait to leave the house tomorrow after 2 days imprisonment Grin. Good luck to all the rest of you - keep going Smile.

chipmonkey · 17/04/2006 03:00

alittlebitshy · 17/04/2006 11:03

lol cod!!!

snafu · 17/04/2006 12:04

First poo in toilet!!!!!!! Grin

Oh, am so proud! Especially when ds waved bye-bye to it as he flushed the loo and said 'Bye-bye poo, see you tomorrow!' Er, hope not, darling, but well done anyway Grin

Did have a slight wee accident this morning but that's only two in the last four days - by Jove, I think he's got it!

alittlebitshy · 17/04/2006 14:21

lol we had poo in toilet lst night. oh the drama of getitng it out... the straiing the "it's out", "no darling it's not". I guess in nappies it started stopped, came and got sat in (urgh) over a course of minutes so sititng concentration is a bit more difficult.

Now i'm faced with the omg, it's hard witping her bum standing up issue. lol.

i think dd has got it too. no accidtens since one on saturday, and before that 1 on thursday. i think i have a potty trained child. amazing!!!!! she even called me at 7.15 this morning with a dry nappy (last wee at half 7 last night on potty ) saying "i need a wee" i am amazed, and amused that potties can make me so happy lol.

looneytune · 17/04/2006 16:53

Great feeling isn't it - think we've cracked it too! Sooooo pleased :)

Went out at 10am this morning and didn't get back until 3.15pm and no accidents! Even managed to get him to use the public toilet (big seat - he's used to a softie) in town when he was desperate! Dh tried with him in the mens twice but nothing then ds said he really really needed to go so mummy took him and just pulled his trousers down and plonked him on (no asking questions or anything) and once he was reassured I had a hold of him and he would not fall, he relaxed and had the biggest wee yet!!

Got home and another poo in potty (was worried as he was nervous and didn't go yesterday and seemed to have a problem again).

I'm so proud of him. Seems like they just need time to 'crack it' and then that's it! :)

ALBS - just get her to bend over (hands on floor, bum in air) to wipe. This is what I did at first with female mindee and have now started doing with ds. Now mindee goes on normal toilet seat so I have room to put arm down and wipe whilst she's still sitting on loo iyswim Wink

Please wish me luck for tomorrow. Am hoping that he won't go backwards once the mindees are back as now he does know the signs, he SHOULD be ok?!?!?! [nervous emoticon]

cod · 17/04/2006 18:14

well done all
you see onyl a week!

Latz · 17/04/2006 19:01

Think we've cracked it too - no accidents again today!!!

After a slow start she seems to have cracked it! (Sorry bad Easter joke!)

By the way have a couple of hour car journey later in week - do I risk it or put on pullups just for the journey??

Passionflower · 17/04/2006 19:08

Day 8, and another positive day here too.

Small wee accident on the way to the potty first thing this morning.

No further wee accidents.

Coddy will be so proud, we went swimming and she went on the ladies toilet before getting in the pool.

Big poo accident though - she was engrossed in a game and didn't even tell me. Found it when I told her to come and try on the potty.

Then we went to a friends for drinks and nibbles and she went on their big toilet.

Very hppy today despite poo. Smile
