GreatEXPATations · 14/04/2012 21:07

sounds interesting, is that an OU course?

Meglet · 14/04/2012 22:01

yes, Understanding Society.

OU for beginners Smile.

madwomanintheattic · 15/04/2012 01:16

Expat, no idea tbh. I think they have just given up on attempting to dictate what/when I produce stuff.... Grin it's been a fairly haphazard ride and I think they are at the point that anything will be a bonus, and if by some miracle I finish the thing it will surprise everyone. Blush

In all seriousness, I think the latest decision was an admin error, but as it is clearly in my favour I'm not arguing with it... (actually, I'm not discussing it at all, as I don't want them looking too closely and announcing it was a mistake...)

3000 miles was a guess. It's a nine hour flight. Grin I suspect yours is longer. Wink my Athens login doesn't work though, so I'm going to have to email the library and find out why... I'm tempted to fly back next month and renew all my software. Easier to appear legit in person.

hello again all...good to see you all timewasting on here working hard Wink
My TMA05 is a flippin enormous qualitative study thematic analysis (keep up) to be written by Wednesday. It's taken well over a fortnight and I've only just started the write up Hmm
ohhhh I need more Wine

good luck the rest of you putting a pen to paper (aka staying off mn long enough to type your work)

neverknowinglyunderdressed · 15/04/2012 14:58

Hello, can I join too?

I have 4000 word EMA due in week and a half. I have currently done 988 deeply average words. Finding it very hard to motivate myself, as usual, but on the bright side this is my very last assignment!

MrsS3 do you drink wine and write? I had glass of red today before doing 300 words and wondered if it is bad form?!

madwomanintheattic · 15/04/2012 15:11

oo, mrss, topic?

tumbleweedblowing · 15/04/2012 16:14

Ah ha MrsS3 I think we must be on the same course!

I keep looking at DD1's friend Chloe with x-ray specs, trying to code her utterances - which given that she is a teenager consist of "yes" "uh hu" "ok" - and so make the other Chloe and her "sort of"s seem positively eloquent.

MrsS3 · 15/04/2012 23:22

Grin tumbleweed, that Chloe one is positively boring and it's like trying to code a dripping tap. Searching for meaning with my best glasses on, yawnnnn...
I'm doing stuff in strange order, having already done ed209 and I have to say it helps, if a tad weird. It means I haven't done any got to do more work on attachment theory or language (or identity for that matter) cos it was all in the last course ohhh I will still naff it up though.

madwoman, you are truly, err, mad. Grin Social constructivism, attachment, I keep wandering into identity - coding an interview of a rambling woman in her fifties and trying to find anything remotely interesting suitable to analyse for qualitative report. there were far more interesting interviews, this particular one is sooooo mediocre.

neverknowing - wine is an essential lubricant of the neurological transmitters in the brain. I'm a psychology stoodint, I oughta talk a lot of nonsense psychobable know Wink

Why is it that everyone else's courses sound so much more interesting and academic than your own?
Hmm

madwomanintheattic · 15/04/2012 23:32

Grin I have four of my own interviews sitting waiting to be coded, lol. I can't decide whether to do the rest of the interviews and transcribe, and then code all together, or to do it piecemeal whilst they are still relatively fresh.

It takes blooming yonks. But I do find that once I start, I can't stop, and it does all come together alarmingly fast. Until I look at the clock and realise days have passed, y know....

MrsS3 · 15/04/2012 23:56

oooh, madwoman, decisions. I think I'd have to go the piecemeal route as four or more transcripts to code would make me lose the will to live. I've been over the first coding about three thousand times (feels like) and have way too many codes. If you have any tips, hand 'em over I got my final themes from watching the interview the first time, that bit was easy (yes I know...but it worked!!) Grin

littleducks · 16/04/2012 10:56

Am sitting in ikea cafe, kids in crèche....I have my book but am drawn to post here instead Grin.

Back to school tomorrow but I may need a day or two to recover before hitting the books hard!

Expat- how you doing, will you beat deadline tomorrow (without staying up til silly o'click tonight?)

neverknowinglyunderdressed · 16/04/2012 11:06

Have been sitting at desk for 2 hours already but inevitably written 0 words. 11am too early for wine?!

HolofernesesHead · 16/04/2012 13:22

Grin Neverknowingly!

Yukkk.I am re-drafting a paper today and it is crap. I have to submit on Friday but...it's crap. Oh well...

GreatEXPATations · 16/04/2012 18:06

hell-ooo! ikea? that's entreprising! i'm at my desk..still..hope not to be so at silly o'clock as have managed to bash out 4,638 words of something or other but now need to proof-read and check formatting, refs, appendices, biblio, spellcheck. I must, I must beat that deadline! am fuelled by dark choc, coffee and boredom with myslef at getting tied up in such knots about it..

Never, I know what you mean about sitting at one's desk for hours with 0 words produced..don't know why i'm so crap (well, am back on here for one!) sometimes SO focussed, other times desperately keen to find a new recipe (and even bake it!), update my FB status and do some online window-shopping! WHY?!! i did after all voluntarily choose to do this course...

Holo, if you've got til Fri, there's hope. Get a good night's sleep and review/improve tomorrow?

madwomanintheattic · 16/04/2012 21:07

Nah, no tips, mrss. I usually go by gut response, which is why I'm deffo a qual girl and loathe quant. Grin I find it better to group like codes and simplify if I can, but sometimes you just can't. Not seen chloe though lol.

Ikea Envy

HolofernesesHead · 17/04/2012 09:27

Yes Expat, that's what I did - had a nice long bath (reading an interesting, but not-related-to-my-essay academic journal in the bath Blush) (Does anyone else do that?) and here I am to see this thing off today (the voice of steely determination!) Well done on your writing!

gingergran · 17/04/2012 18:30

OK iCMA done - just need to go over the answers but have till tuesday to do that.
TMA to do for tuesday also - have thought about it but not done it - as in thought that i really should be doing it!
Another TMA for 6 May - haven't even read the material let alone decided on the option and ...
just about 6 weeks behind on module to catch up on...can't leave too much stuff out as there is an exam at the end and my luck is to have the bits i have ignored come up so better get my act together except I am going to italy tomorrow until sunday and have no intentions of working when i am away

OP posts:
HolofernesesHead · 17/04/2012 19:59

Well done Gingergran! Have a gorgeous time in bella Italia.

Right - I shall procrastinate no more. Am submitting my two pieces on Thurdsay afternoon, and dammit, they will be good!

fuzzpig · 17/04/2012 20:04

Hello all.
Thankfully I did a draft of my assignment (due 24th) ages ago because I haven't looked at it since.
Really need to phone the student support people about my Aspergers referral.

In the meantime I have a booklet to finish for my apprenticeship and I really can't be arsed.

chipmunksex · 18/04/2012 13:07

Does everyone else hate their course? What was I thinking? Is it just that studying and writing essays about stuff sucks all the fun out of it?

My course forum is a desolate wasteland, it makes me laugh now every time I look at it, what crap.

MrsS3 · 18/04/2012 15:28

hehee chipmunk - I love the idea of my course, even the actual content of it, but I fear you have hit the nail on the head with the statement that "studying and writing essays about stuff sucks all the fun out of it" or perhaps just leave it as "studying and writing essays about stuff sucks" Grin

I should not be on here. I have 650 words of discussion to write, all my refs to do and am shit at it and an abstract to do. By this evening Hmm

madwomanintheattic · 18/04/2012 15:46

Holo, I read in the bath all the time. Quite a lot of my text books are slightly distorted by the damp air as a result... It's only since I stopped using public transport though (there isn't any here) - that used to be my reading time.

neverknowinglyunderdressed · 19/04/2012 10:01

Word count now 2191. Today's word count after 1 hour 0. If I spent as much time writing essay as i do on doing word count, I'd be 1000 words further on.

GreatEXpat - you probably wont be on here now as you will have handed it in! Must feel great. Good luck with you dissertation. I finished mine last Nov, and found it extremely challenging. Nothing worse for a procrastinator, than an extra long essay!

I'm finding this last essay of the whole MSc to be the most annoying, its like getting blood of of a stone. Or maybe I always feel like that? Tricky one this, as you choose your own topic but then still have to structure reply around 3 preset questions.

This time next week I will be submitting it, finished forever. So need to just get my finger out!

HolofernesesHead · 19/04/2012 20:33

Grin Madwoman! I made the mistake of eading a library book in the bath a while ago... Blush

Well, the good news is that I submitted two pieces today! Yippee! Grin I only have an editing job to do, a journal article and a book chapter to write, two exams to sit in June, and then...on to the next exciting round of study! What a glutton for punishment I am. Do you ever feel like that?

Right now though, I'm going to kick back and look at clothes websites this evening...

HolofernesesHead · 19/04/2012 20:34

Neverknowingly - jus tthink of how you'll feel next week, when it's out of your hair forever. Trust me, it's a good feeling!
