How was everyone's summer?

So...after having sniffed our new lovely course books, did anyone start yet on actually reading them?

This year I'm doing A215 Creative Writing and A300 20th C. Literature. Full time, then. And I'm supposed to go back to work within next few weeks Hmm After having procrastinated terribly last year and barely scraping by I am somewhat erm, well, I'm rather panicking about managing it all this year.

Let's start moaning about our first assignments!

Heh heh I know winny - it's unbelievable. Makes me even more loath to post anything as I would hate to receive the same kind of chummy, helpful criticism.

But if it leads you to the weeping willow, go there. Mine wasn't really about a fallen tree, it was about childhood memories and other things. My bit of fiction had nary a fallen tree in it.

winnybella · 01/11/2011 19:46

It led me to childhood memories as well, every single time. Maybe I should just go with it. I just feel I'm not sufficiently removed from the subject...dunno.

I am just terrified of writing something cringingly pretentious like a lot of the OU posters seem to do

wildstrawberryplace · 01/11/2011 20:03

winny go with it. Worrying that you'll be cringingly pretentious pretty much means you definitely won't be Grin. I think maybe some of mine was rather purple and not spare and elegant, but it's only the first one, I "settled".

said · 01/11/2011 20:03

Really? That bad? Shock Was expected something inpenetrable and wannabe Joycean.

wildstrawberryplace · 01/11/2011 20:09

No - well not the ones I read anyway. It was all a bit 6th form common room. Feel very mean now Blush

schroeder · 01/11/2011 20:16

What are you all whiffling on about? Smile

winnybella · 01/11/2011 20:17
Grin

No, but it's one thing to be aware that maybe some of the stuff you wrote is a bit pretentious or whatever and another to post it proudly on the forum...

said if you're studying with the OU I think you can access all the forums so you can see for yourself.

OP posts:
winnybella · 01/11/2011 20:20

I mean being aware is good. Thinking you're the next Henry James when you're clearly not is another, imho.

schroeder, how are ya? Thanks for support last night. Now, where are those Halloween treats you've been talking about? Grin

I have loads of chupa chups if you want 'em?

I'm not sure what happened to all the mini caramels?
I have been studying like a good girl and am now only a few days behind.
In fact I'm starting to remember why I wanted to study politics in the first place. Grin

winnybella · 01/11/2011 20:32

Good on you Smile

Erm...no thanks for the chupa chups Grin I just got a big box of After Eights but they seem too sweet Confused I haven't had them for ages, is it something to do with Nestle taking over or am I imagining that they used to taste better?

OP posts:
schroeder · 01/11/2011 20:41

Everything tastes too sweet for me these days. Every time I have desert out the dc look at me as I take a bite Hmm 'is it too sweet?'Grin I'm so predictable.

But no, I don't have any info on after eights.

said · 01/11/2011 23:44

Tempted but, no, it'd be mean to look. I wouldn't dare do a creative writing course, let alone post extracts.

Will be following you a bit, schroeder, as I think you're doing a course I want to do in the future.

schroeder · 02/11/2011 11:01

What DD306? You need to ask prolesworth, she has the skinny on living political ideas, cause she did it last year. Grin

Prolesworth · 02/11/2011 12:37

guffawing at this: "blah blah blah...and then I woke up, and it had all been a dream!"

and this: "And really shouldn't we have a November thread? It makes us look like half-arsed lazy procrastinators still stuck on last months work if we don't...erm, OK yeah. It's a fair cop"

Grin
schroeder · 02/11/2011 12:59

I was going to start a November thread, but have drawn a blank as to a witty title-any of you creative types got any good suggestions?

wildstrawberryplace · 02/11/2011 13:06

November Procrastination Station

wildstrawberryplace · 02/11/2011 13:07

(imho there's no place for wit, procrastination is a serious business Grin)

schroeder · 02/11/2011 13:16

I do like it strawberry, but haven't we had that before?

there's always room for jello wit Wink

winnybella · 02/11/2011 13:16
Grin Schroeder, will you start the new thread?
OP posts:
schroeder · 02/11/2011 13:17

Go on then.

wildstrawberryplace · 02/11/2011 13:18

Schroeder - g'wan, g'wan, g'wan.

schroeder · 02/11/2011 13:25

I've done it-it's rubbish, but it's there Grin
