Go on admit it here. Following on from the 'do you sterilise' thread, I'm sure there are lots of things that parents do that would horrify others. Let's keep this a lighthearted thread and no having a go at anyone who shocks you ....

ach you're all amateurs
my mum was on the phone to me today asking about my stitches [wincing emoticon]
and bragging about how she never had a sitch with five babies "cos I smoked and so you were all nice and small...." >pause< "I did cut down though..."

dropinthemanger · 12/12/2005 20:00

!!

I know what you mean though! I used to share a single mattress with my Mum on the floor and I distinctly remembering liking the smell of her smoke twirling round us in the dark while we watched TV until all hours! I was only about 6 or 7!

speedscot · 12/12/2005 20:29

Hi, I'm new here, I came across this and it made me want to sign up and contribute! Thank you everyone, my feelings of maternal inadequacy are evaporating fast. My DD is 20 months and I have done most of these bad things including still breastfeeding her on demand several times a day. Thank you for making me see I'm probably quite normal and not a complete failure!

We3kingsofOrinocoare · 12/12/2005 20:46

..counting chocolate raisins as "one of the five a day"
.. ditto strawberry jam (but not on the same day)

paolosgirl · 12/12/2005 20:51

I don't feed mine organic anything - and I have been known to raise my voice at them (on the odd occasion .

There's lots more I could admit to...I'm a baaaaad mummy

Cappucino · 13/12/2005 10:31

hmmm...

found baby chewing a months-old wee-soaked raisin that she'd found in the bottom of the car seat I was cleaning out after dd1's 'accident';

giving dd1 her the sparkly girly bits out of her party bags and then eating all the chocolates myself on the grounds that I can't change my own eating habits but I shouldn't let her get into bad ones herself...

oh and the worst one ever - gave baby a bottle of vitamin c & iron tablets to rattle for a minute when she was at my mums and I hadn't got anything else while I answered the phone and then looked round to find that dd1 had helpfully opened them for her and was putting one in her mouth... those people from NHS Direct are lovely, by the way, ring them if anything like his ever happens to you...

Cappucino · 13/12/2005 10:54

I'd like to point out in my defence however that we have never had a prunch or a pramfast - because doesn't that mean that you'd have to clean out the pram?

weesaidie · 13/12/2005 11:30

Great thread and most of the 'crimes' are not bad at all!! So much mummy 'guilt.' NO MORE I say!

beejay · 13/12/2005 11:32

Personally I think being ridiculously over-protective is likely to be more emotionally damaging than anything mentioned here!

shimmy21 · 13/12/2005 11:47

I do none of these things and have reported you all to social services.

melrose · 13/12/2005 12:33

Have always warmed milk in the microwave, don't think I'd know how yo do it any other way

Slept DS in his own room when 5 days old

Nearly always put him in the buggy to go to sleep at naptime and then leave him sleeping in the front garden, whatever the weather, while I get on with stuff/watch telly

If he falls asleep in the car leave him there till he wakes up

Love this thread!

crunchie · 13/12/2005 12:42

Give my kids a cup of tea and diet coke

See other 'tea' thread

cheltenhamgal · 13/12/2005 13:16

I say fair play to anyone and as long as it is not actually harmful then carry on, my daughter is one of the most confident, self assured, gorgeous kids I have ever met but then yes I am biased !

cheltenhamgal · 13/12/2005 13:18

merrycompo, thx for your comment I was told that by the health visitor but then I probably did it before six months also. She especially used to have a liking for liver and onion but wont touch it now !

cheltenhamgal · 13/12/2005 13:21

Thanks UCM as she has turned out to be a gorgeous, confident individual and I used to drink whilst I was pregnant(I said drink everyone not get drunk lol)(shock)

Ironmaiden · 13/12/2005 16:49

Went to my mate's house to find her 2yr old watching "Scary Movie" and dancing around the living room saying "Smell my finger".
U'd have to have seen Scary Movie to know why I swooned but if u haven't, use ur imagination!!

Tamz77 · 13/12/2005 16:58

Chocolate upon getting out of bed (advent calendar)

Wotsits for lunch

NEVER was fruit or veg unless they actually have mud on them

NEVER wash hands unless quite visibly dirty

Spent long hours decorating with only short baby breaks in between

NEVER sterilised anything in my life

Co-sleeping and extended breastfeeding (DS 2.4 yrs) - have lost friends over this

I pick DS's nose for him (one of my favourite hobbies - is it just me?!)

Consistent inconsistency

Yelling, whining, throwing things when upset (that's me, not him)

pucca · 13/12/2005 16:58

Some of these are so funny! i am guilty of many too

FLOSS...especially liked your "cold cup in the bath" pmsl

Tamz77 · 13/12/2005 17:02

Also,

Drinks bathwater

Eats the dropped scraps of dinner off the floor when I get him down from his high chair

Pulls the flush for me when I have been to the toilet (is that bad? Unhygienic probably)

Point out what is in his poo when changing his nappy (he likes to see bits of sweetcorn and olives in there)

Don't bother with any outdoor exercise if I think it is too cold (ie October - February)

UCM · 13/12/2005 19:14

I reckon we are all normal.

Possibly the worst thing DS done recently is found an old coco pop stuck to his foot, he stopped eating these ages ago and instead of putting it in bin, ate it. I gagged, DH guffawed and DS was looking at us as if to say what have I done. I have ignored him eating dried cat food whilst washing up as he liked it and lots of horrid horrid stories. I did draw the line when he tried to eat a snail recently.

Oooooo another fantasticly yuk one. I opened a window one day to clean it and he found a dead bluebottle and was just about to.........I managed to stop him on that.

UCM · 13/12/2005 19:16

Drinking bathwater is absolutely wonderful. It's water and since DS will only drink juice usually it's nice to see him getting some water even if it's all snowy looking because I wash him in aqueous cream.
