Go on admit it here. Following on from the 'do you sterilise' thread, I'm sure there are lots of things that parents do that would horrify others. Let's keep this a lighthearted thread and no having a go at anyone who shocks you ....

Tortington · 10/12/2005 17:05

in my defense i did ask dh " it doesn't have sex in does it?"
"nope, just killing people"

rey · 10/12/2005 17:07

bath night is only one day a week in our house (and they still look cleaner than most of the school kids at school!)

startd getting porn pop ups on puter - told my 16 YO not to look at porn sites and bugger up puter costing 500 squid - if he wants some porn - tell me and i'll buy him a mag.

fisiltoe · 10/12/2005 17:15

Anytime after 5pm I tell the children it is 6pm, and therefore bathtime.

And everyone has been banned from teaching my children to learn to tell the time.

And all of the below.

GeorgiePorgieCHRISTMASpuddinga · 10/12/2005 17:19

Just had to jump on the thread and say it's the best thing I've read in a long time. Have just about stopped laughing.

Am {grin} from ear to ear as expecting DD2 on 14th Jan and no way am I going to be as anal as I was with DD1.

Thanks god there are some mums out there that let their kids be kids, get a bit dirty and eat non-organic, 'unhealthy' food - gasp!

Will be fully paid up member of your club very soon

Bet your kids are happy, content and well rounded.

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 11/12/2005 11:43

lol at telling the time - I love these dark afternoons and regularly tell dd it's bedtime at 5pm ... she does go to sleep though!

tysmaw · 11/12/2005 13:09

this thread has really cheered me up

here's a few of my own:

-give ds a dummy
-bottlefeed
-weaned before 6 months
-give my 7 month old a couple of choclate buttons every couple of days or so
-let him play in his activity centre with the music and lights turned off so i can watch the telly in peace
-no set bedtime routine - he goes when we go, can be about 1 0'clock somenights - he lies to 10:30am though, so i get a long lie too!

his dad once gave him some sugar off the tip of his finger to give him a sugar rush to keep him from falling asleep one time. i was not in the room and didn't know about it until later

i could go on and on...

I've regularly eaten runny eggs, brie, parma ham, pate and peanuts this pregnancy. And I've always used the TV as a baby sitter. Always used jars and rarely home cooked stuff at the "mush" stage. Frequently ignore them. Am not going to ds' nativity play next Friday because I can't be bothered.

Spaghetti · 11/12/2005 18:29

I have done so many of these:
*let watch too much television
*only bathe when dirty (although I excuse this one by saying it's good for his eczema, not that he really suffers from it, but he would if he had a bath every night)
*let him sleep in the t-shirt he's been wearing all day

  • bribe
  • used reins
  • don't make him wash his hands after going to the toilet
  • don't force fruit or veg down his neck to avoid a tantrum (but do give him the squishy vitamins and tell him they are sweet treats)
  • Advent chocolates before breakfast (I thought this is what they are for: to get them out of bed)
  • left a cup of milk in his bed when I go to sleep to avoid the early morning wake up call "I want some MILK PLEASE"
  • McDonalds
  • non organic food
  • sausages
  • I could continue all night... I think it would be faster to list the things I have done that are 'correct'...
hercules · 11/12/2005 19:22

I've never been to a nativity but that's because it was impossible to get out of work.

merrycompo · 11/12/2005 19:26

used a dummy, formula fed from 6 weeks (not by choice though), had ds in his own room as soon as we came out of hospital, used jars as well as homemade food, taken him to boozy and smoky pubs a couple of times

swedishmum · 11/12/2005 23:43

How nice. I do all these things. Dd had her first bath for days today, she's always de-frothed my Starbucks, and I even snuck wet wipes into the labour ward! Must say, all my 4 are articulate, polite and gorgeous despite having a useless lush (did I mention the drinking?) for a mum!

melrose · 11/12/2005 23:51

Put DS in own room at 10 days old

polly28 · 12/12/2005 00:41

used to leave dd in the car whilst I went into shop, she's now 14 so she survived, didn't feel wrong back then somehow

Even more shocking...leave ds in car when I dash into a shop,he's 3....I do lock the car.Know I shouldn't do it,but he loves listening to the music on the radio.

alibag · 12/12/2005 16:40

I do loads of the things mentioned here, but here's a good one I just heard about from a "friend of a friend":
Told her children that when the ice cream van plays a tune it means it has run out of ice cream.

QueensSpeechEagle · 12/12/2005 16:51

alibag - i have always told my kids that one about the ice cream man running out of ices!!!!

Easy · 12/12/2005 17:07

shout "go away" at ds when he wakes me up at 6:30 on a Sunday morning.

Sometimes I add "please"

Tortington · 12/12/2005 18:03

i scare my ds's gilrfirend with my drivig apparently

cheltenhamgal · 12/12/2005 18:30

dd is only 5yrs old

.no organic food ever
.ate meat before 1yr old
.watches TV alot
.makes me toast in bed
.makes her own toast
.I have let her watch Little Britain(only Andy)
.only bath once a week
.used to put the clock forward so that i could get her to go to bed earlier
.had to get rid of sky as am skint so had to tell her it was broken and I cant get through to get it mended
I say anything that makes my life easier or funnier as a single mom

cheltenhamgal · 12/12/2005 18:31

Oh and I also have a friend who told her ds and dd that when they went strawberry picking the cattle grid they had walked over weighs them so the man would know how many they had eaten

UCM · 12/12/2005 19:35

Formula fed by choice from birth

Put DS in his own room from 13 weeks

Don't bathe every day. Unless he stinks of wee.

Give him crisps & chocolate to shut him up whilst gossiping on phone

Bought a TV/VCR set for my bedroom so that he can watch tellytubbies whilst I lie in.

Shut him in his bedroom when he is tired. He goes to sleep within 3 minutes (afternoon nap).

use microwave chips when I am only arriving home at 5pm and he wants his dinner.

Promise him chocolate when trying to dress him, only to renege on it later. It's 0600 by the way.

UCM · 12/12/2005 19:37

Cheltenhamgal, it sounds to me like you are doing it right!

merrycompo · 12/12/2005 19:37

cheltenhamgal - babies can eat meat before they are one, just not supposed to before 6 months!

dropinthemanger · 12/12/2005 19:42

Puuurrleeaasse!!!

Unless you are force feeding your children sugar and salt and monosodiumwhatever....or physically and/or emotionally abusing your children....does it matter what we do or don't do to make us a better, more relaxed parents?

FFS-my mother used to smoke in the same bed as me, smoke pot round me, be depressed round me and moved me round the intire circumference of London many , many times in many homes!

I'm 'effing normal and balanced and am a good mother!

Live with your faults-don't try and justify them!
