Knickers in bed

I'm a lone (male) parent to DD of 3.6. She's been out of nappies at night for about a good month or so now, and a lady of my acquaintance told me she should be wearing knickers at night.

So. Should DD wear knickers in bed along with her pyjamas?

Personally, I can't see any point in it as it's just another thing for her to remember to remove when she uses the potty in the night.

no

Choufleur · 13/02/2011 19:10

I don't wear pants under PJs. DS doesn't either.

PearlBarley · 13/02/2011 19:11

No. A bit of air is healthy.

No, especially with pyjamas there is no need. I might with a nightdress if it was chilly as they ride up and DD tends to lose her duvet at night but I can't see any real need for them.

IngridBergmann · 13/02/2011 19:13

How odd. I wouldn't think so, no.

the only reason ds (same age) wears pants in bed is that it seems to prevent him making the jump from 'I am not wearing pants' to 'it's ok to do a wee then!'

It's just a precaution in our case, because he is normally dry at night anyway.

I see no other reason anyone should wear knickers at night.

nightshade · 13/02/2011 19:13

no pants at night, definitely not!

JuJusDad · 13/02/2011 19:13

Thought so.

The idea of the chance of a bit of air is a good point.

Thanks.

My DD wears knickers to bed but that is her choice as she is older than your dd. I would ask the woman why she says your dd should wear pants to bed, then watch her splutter.

onimolap · 13/02/2011 19:14

I really don't think it matters one way or another.

ChippingInAuntyToThomas · 13/02/2011 19:16

It really doesn't matter either way, so 'no pants' is fine :) On the other hand if DD suddenly wants to, that's no biggie either (except more washing! LOL).

If she wears nighties in the summer and has a habit of being less than ladylike you may want to rethink it though, especially when you have visitors.

JuJusDad · 13/02/2011 19:18

Yeah, seemed kinda odd to me too. Her bits surely need a bit of a rest and chance of some air.

Though I can't see why anyone of any age would choose to wear clothing to sleep in, but I wouldn't wish to be accused of driving trucks or having hirsuit hands... Wink

OK I am going to be a bit gross but my two boys both wear pants in bed because if they have 'drips' or skidmarks, I would rather they did that in pants which are changed at least daily than on pjs which aren't.

On the whole I don't think it matters unless she is wearing a nightie - just saying why you might want to wear them! Smile

BitOfFun · 13/02/2011 19:22

Although "bits" needing a rest sounds quite creepy all by itself really.

abdnhiker · 13/02/2011 19:22

No! Actually it can encourage the growth of yeast infections in women so it's a good thing to get in the habit of sleeping without them!

supadupapupascupa · 13/02/2011 19:24

I never wore them as a child because I was told it is good to let the air get to your bits. I honestly think this is true. If I was downstairs in a nightie however I would put pants on.

God no. My niece does this and it means that you have twice the number of knickers to wash.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 13/02/2011 19:28

Why queasy?

undercovamutha · 13/02/2011 19:29

I think some people are in the pants at night 'camp' and some aren't.

Me and my DD wear knickers at night, normally with nighties. DH just wears PJ shorts.

My DD was really confused when we stayed wiht a friend and her children, and friends DDs didn;t wear knickers.

IngridBergmann · 13/02/2011 19:29

Why on earth was this person talking to you about your daughter's underwear anyway?

It seems a bit strange just to mention it out of the blue.

purpleknittingmum · 13/02/2011 19:29

When my daughter was younger and prone to threadworms, the lady in Boots recommended that she put on a clean pair of knickers at bed time, to try and help reinfecting herself, if eggs are on the nightwear this can happen. Perhaps this is what your friend is meaning?

Mine wear knickers at night.

Your bits don't need to be aired out or rested - just wear cotton knickers.

It doesn't mean you'll get yeast infections/thrush - what a silly, outdated, erroneous myth.

But a lot of people I've found on here don't like wearing pants or washing often.

IngridBergmann · 13/02/2011 19:33

Reality, with the greatest of respect I think you're reading too much into it.

I may be wrong but isn't the OP someone who is known and liked IRL by several posters? If so there's no need for suspicion surely?
