Hes soooooo gorgeous and hes all mine! I'm on such a high right now, don't know how long it'll last though.

I didn't have to be induced, I didn't even have to wait till my due date a healthy baby and no stitches! I'm ecstatic! The relief of it all being over is wonderful. Now I'm going to concentrate on remembering every last detail of his face before this stage passes away too.

Come on Cha and Ailsa!

How is everyone doing?

Growth spurt is still at large in this house and Ive all but given up breastfeeding - decided this morning after a hellish night trying to get my milk supply that I really cant cope with the amount of effort it takes to get the milk supply back up from its very low level when he isnt really interested in sucking my boob anyway - he was getting so full of wind trying to suck my boob like a bottle teat and not latching on and consequently was getting very upset!

He had his first night in the big cot last night so is now unswaddled as of last week and out of moses - where is my baby!!

For the bottle feeding mums, which milk and how much is your baby taking?

Has anyone been getting injections this week? Hope that there are no reactions - poor loves

Becca

I hope this weeks a better one for everyone and that the babies (and Mums) are feeling better.

One more for the growth spurt club ! Wish he'd slow down a bit though, I've been given lots of 3-6 months clothes and it would be nice if they lasted more than a few weeks.

I've given up on the idea of him sleeping through the night for the forseeable future - he has made it once but I think that was the calpol after his jabs -no sign of it happening again at the moment.

Joseph is on Cow & Gate Plus but will be changing to Aptamil Extra as I've just discovered that although there are LCP's in C&G premium there aren't any in the Plus. He's been taking around 36oz recently.

princesspeahead · 08/12/2003 22:30

hi everyone! beccarollo, don't feel down about the bf - just do whatever you feel is right for you and remember you have done fantastically well by harvey already, you really have!
mine is on aptamil (normal stuff). he is also on a growth spurt - woke up for the first time in 4 weeks last night and downed 8oz at 4.30am, then again at 7.00, 9.30, 11,30, 2.00.... it was ridiculous! Normally he has around 5 x 7oz bottles a day.
Haven't given him any jabs yet, suppose I should do. Maybe next monday - get them over before xmas? How long were your lot grizzly after their 1st set of jabs?
ezcema/cradlecap getting a bit better, thanks for your posts melsy. tried olive oil for ages but although it was making it better immed after, it was back the next day. I'm now doing cradle cap shampoo, and plain old vaseline on his face for the ezcema which is working quite well, fingers crossed. he still is covered in scratches on his forehead though, poor thing

Joseph had his jabs in the morning then was fine until the afternoon both times when he got a temperature & cried copiously for about 4 hours. I hadn't realised until I went the first time that they get one in each leg. I'm sure there was only one when DD was a baby. Think Meningitis C has been added. I'm thinking about asking for them to be seperate for the last lot as he's reacted both times now - I think it's a lot for their little systems to deal with.

wiltshire · 09/12/2003 13:13

Well girls, glad everyones babies are fine. My problems with DS never seem to be ending. We were sitting watching TV at 8 pm last night when the dog went mad as someone had entered out porch. I went to see what it was and they had gone, but left an envelope. Inside this envelope was a lovely letter from my local hospital informing me that whilst my son was there recently he had come into contact with someone who has TB. Can I ring the help line and arrange for him to be screened!! As you can all imagine I went bananas, especially as DS is being treated with ABs at present for, wait for it, a nasty cough. I spoke with a paediatrician on the phone last night who said that if, indeed DS has this, it wouldn't show just yet as the incubation period is quite long. We are going to be screened on Friday. What a pallava! Moral of this story - don't take your children to either hosp/doctors/clinic. My poor little mite caught croup recently from the doctors. I dread to think what we might get from Mother & Toddler - Green parrot disease! I think what frightened me the most was the appearance of this letter, by hand, by a person who scarpered

wiltshire · 09/12/2003 13:14

Adell, sorry about poor Josephs jabs. Max hasn't been able ot have his yet as he has been too ill.

wiltshire · 09/12/2003 13:16

Becca, Max on approx 30/34 oz per day, still every 3 hours. Aptimil first.

mears · 09/12/2003 13:29

Sorry your feeling stressed with B/F at the moment Becca. A word of warning would be do not expect bottle feeding to cure growth spurts or night feeds. You may switch to bottle feeding and find that the feeding pattern is the same which would be a shame. Usually milk production increases approx 36-48 hours after frequent feeds. You may be assuming you do not have enough milk when in fact he is looking to suck/be nursed. Before switching totally to bottles, treat him like you would a bottle fed baby. By that I mean do not always assume he needs milk. If he had had a full bottle, would you give him another one straight away? What would you do in that situation? Does he take a dummy? Can you take him out for a walk during the day and get him to sleep?
You have done so well so far Becca. Sounds like a confidence wobbly again. Perhaps you might want to mix feed again and give yourself some more freedom. At his age he can do both. However, if you decide to stop completely, you can be chuffed with what you achieved. Well done

emmatmg · 09/12/2003 13:47

Blimey, how do you all get you little ones to drink so much?
I make 4x6oz bottles for the daytime and 1x4oz bottle for night time(so thats 28oz) and he very rarely drinks all of every one, never all of the night time one. He regulary sleeps beyond the 4 hours routine and takes AGES to drink what he does have.......sometimes 2 hours of stopping and starting.
He's been in vari-flow teats for weeks and the milk flows quite fast from them so it can't be that. He hated fast flow when I tried them.

Abit worried after reading how much you're littlies are taking but it's impossible to get him to drink more, or faster, as he just gets upset and mad.

Could it be the formula, SMA gold?

Beccarollo · 09/12/2003 14:03

Wiltshire - OMG that is very scary - good luck for Friday, I hope all is fine.

Mears - I understand the theory on increasing milk supply I think - but I got to the point where I thought whats the point when he wont feed properly from the boob anymore and seems very happy on the bottle - so Im trying to give him as much EBM as poss in his bottles whilst trying to control very difficult 4 year old at the moment - if Im keeping up with a few breast feeds a day can I still at a point think right Ill introduce some more with the methods you describe?

Im happy with the way the last few days have gone even if its just taken the pressure off - I got to the point when I was thinking about/talking about/ reading about breastfeeding ALL THE TIME!!!

mears · 09/12/2003 14:13

Yes you can Becca. There are women who work during the week giving bottles and who then breastfeed on their days off. You can make it as flexible as you want. Other women prefer to stick to rigid routines such as breast morning and night with bottles throughout the day, every day. You do what suits you best. There was a mumsnetter who stopped B/F then decided she wanted to breastfeed again and did so successfully. It can be hard to retrieve if you completely stop. If you are expressing milk though, you are still stimulating milk production. The more you express/feed, the more you make. If you are feeling tense and aggitated when feeding, that passes to the baby. Try and be relaxed asa pobbible when actually breastfeeding and you should find that he will feed better. Only you will know what those times are with a 4 year old. Remember it well

adell · 09/12/2003 14:44

Wiltshire, what a nightmare, last thing you need. Good luck for Friday.

Emma- I know it's easier said than done but I wouldn't worry about how much he's having, if he needed more I'm sure he'd take it. Joseph's spurt seems to have suddenly stopped today, he's taking much less again. I've heard a few people complain about SMA Gold saying that it made their babies very windy & sicky, my DD got on quite badly with it.

ANGELMOTHER · 09/12/2003 15:47

There's no end of fun for our September babies huh
I knew the time between birth and Xmas would go by in a bit of a blur but blimey it has gone fast hasn't it.
Dd2 is fine at last and finally getting her first jabs tomorrow (9wks old), pneumonia gone, sore throat gone only bad thing is she's determined to snack and sleeps far less than I think a new baby should, still never seems to go for longer than an hour. I know she's also not taking as much at feeds so is probably waking hungry but it's turning into a vicious circle that's hard to stop. Most awkward thing is my neck is seriously hurting (seeing physio) and have to sit up at night feeds instead of lying down. Any advice on positions greatly received.....
Wilt that sounds really scary what does this "screening" involve, I would be bloody annoyed at the hospital also esp skulking away after posting letter........shameful
How are things Becca, I almost feel like giving up feeding too, hope you're finding it easier.

emmatmg · 09/12/2003 16:32

Has anyone changed formula at this stage and it all gone well or totally pairshaped?

Might ask this in the feeding topic too

Bekki · 09/12/2003 21:10

Its just you and me Angelmother. Everyone seems to have started bottlefeeding. Hope you start feeling yourself again soon Becca.
Ds2 weight seems to have slowed down and my mil jumps in with lets try some baby rice. I don't think so. My mum has brought some SMA gold to keep aorund her house "just incase". Hes fully brestfed what would he need that for? And I've no intention of giving him solids until hes actually ready. Saying all this to a generation that shunned bf and started weaning early its probably a lot for them to take in. My mil suggested that 6 months was far too old for weaning and that if I left it that long he wouldn't know what to do. I wonder sometimes if my family actually think before they speak. The whole re-usable nappy thing has gone down like a lead balloon too. Still my HV is a happy lady. I feel all smug now. Shes congratulated me on breastfeeding, expressing, re-usables and waiting to wean. I got exclamation marks on my HV report. Sorry I'm bragging but no one wants to listen.
I think these Sept babies have been the most illness prone babies that I have ever seen. Weve dodged the jabs with illness toO Wilt. Fingers crossed about the screening.
Emma- I'm not entirely sure how much Alexander drinks but when i express he only has 3 ounces so I don't think its anything to worry about.

emmatmg · 10/12/2003 07:10

Ohhh wilt, I don't know how I missed your post, what a bloody nightmare. Cheeky buggers delivering it like that. Hope thing turn out okay.....I'm sure they will.
James is also on anti-biotics for a cough, I was convinced he had a chest infection, infact I still think it as I can feel his chest rattling now while he's sitting on my lap(he'll be computer literate by 6 months) but the Doc has checked him twice and disagrees. He gave him the anti-b's to clear up the cough which I found very odd.
Agree 100% with you about our littlies Bekki, how can such young one be so ill. Poor little things.
My mum keeps saying 'oh you'll need to wean him early because of X...Y...Z' Jesus mother he's only 11 weeks! what are they like?????????

Beccarollo · 10/12/2003 09:06

Im still getting the wean him early pressures! Got him weighed yesterday and he is 15lb13oz - at least I know it is definitely a growth spurt - almost a pound since last week.

The spurt is showing no signs of stopping and he is taking about 7-8oz every 2.5 hours or so, he has started waking up in the night again but only once so not too bad.

I hate it when they are ill, you would think that there should be some rule against any little baby being ill wouldnt you tsk

Angelmother, I saw your post about BF Positions and sympathise - lying down to feed started to really knack my neck too, its v painful, hope you find something to help it.

ANGELMOTHER · 10/12/2003 09:15

I don't think any of us were prepared for the sickness to beset us and our little uns were we. Sorry to hear James is on anti-bio also Emma
Well we've got jabs today just as she's getting back to the stress free baby she was, so pray she has no adverse reaction to the jabs. Is it in both legs and then polio orally ?
Will have to restrain myself from punching nurse
Yes Becca my neck is agony, the Ibuprofen is helping little or no. At least my Mun arrives today so finally some help. Dh is conviently working all the hours that God sends.

adell · 10/12/2003 09:59

I thought I read somewhere that babies who have more illnesses in their first year develop stronger immune systems, so hopefully they will all be very healthy toddlers !

The jabs are both in both legs & oral polio Angelmother, fingers crossed she's OK. Know what you mean about the nurse. Ours told DD for her pre-school jabs that it would be "just like a bee sting" Poor DD is terrified of bees, became absolutely hysterical and had to be forcefully held down. Now that horrible woman has stabbed my baby too!

Emma, have you seen Dr Brown's bottles ? They have a vent up the middle which is supposed to reduce the amount of air a baby takes in. I changed to them a few weeks ago and found that Joseph fed much better than he had been, less wriggling & stopping and starting.

emmatmg · 10/12/2003 11:03

adell, I haven't seen those but I will start a quest to find them.....would James's usual teats fit on them? he's very picky with the shape of the teat.
He sounds just like your Joseph though, really wriggly(that's hard to say out loud!!) and faffing about although miricles do happen as he drunk a 7oz bottle in about50 minutes this morning......I think he knows I've been talking about him

adell · 10/12/2003 11:11

They sell them in mothercare. They have got two extra bits to clean, but aren't too much of a pain. We've been using Tommy Tippee variflo on them so I think you can use any that fit wide necked bottles - they do say it's best to use their own teats as they're the correct flow, but seeing as they also do variflow I think it's a sales pitch. I'm swopping milk this afternoon, I'll let you know how it goes. It might have been chance with Joseph and he'd have stopped faffing anyway, but I'm sticking with good old Dr Brown !

emmatmg · 10/12/2003 11:20

Mothercare here I come. DH is home from work soon so I'm going to get some retail therepy. And I am V sad as I simply depise looking for clothes and stuff for me yet will walk around kiddies shops for hours!!!!

adell · 10/12/2003 11:25

I forgot to add that they are expensive about 11 pounds for 2. Know what you mean about shopping, my two might as well have my wardrobe, I don't seem to have anything in it !!

emmatmg · 10/12/2003 11:32

Blimey......might just start with one pack of them then. £11 for 2 bottles....that's outrageuos(sp?)

adell · 10/12/2003 11:45

I've got enough to send you one to try if you like in case they don't make any difference. If you want me to email me on della(underscore)green(at)hotmail(dot)com and I'll stick one in the post later.
