How much do you 'ignore' your children?

Have just been out with two families - friends of ours- who have kids about the same age, and I have to confess, I am amzed by the extent to which they actively 'ignore' their children trhoughout the whole afternoon.

By this I mean they seem to 'zone out' from all the various requests/ questions/ constant 'to-ing and fro-ing' that seems typical of under- 6s??

As a result they actively seem to enjoy themselves more, manage to have 'adult' conversations (which I gave up years ago )and it seems that their kids eventually give up and go and sort out themselves whatever it is they want....( which seems like a good thing I suppose)

I can't decide whether I'm just a mug with my kids and let them dominate my life too much... but I simply CAN'T ignore them - it seems really rude and uncaring somehow??

zippi - I agree with you, and I think V has been wonderfully patient. but she has said some things that really got my goat too! I am still not convinced that its all true.

Most of us have a mumsnet prudence filter, and we don't post our more controversial views. okay, I admit mine slips occasionally, but if I posted what V did, Id expect the sort of reception that she has got.

It has been interesting though, and as always, an eye opener into how other people think.

I think you're right actually, people have been a bit overly critical of Vaunda on this thread but I don't think it's a case of picking on her because her parenting differs from others, but more the way she talks about it, as if she is 100% right and people who don't parent the same way are wrong, that's got on people's nerves.

For example, my children do not watch the news but I would welcome other people's views on this and say "hmm, yeah good point but I'd still rather they didn't" or whatever...

Also, Vaunda has instigated most of the discussion by offering information/being critical of others first. Even her very first couple of messages directly criticised other people.

But yeah, it's so boring now, lol...

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 18:42

Steffee, my dh is out of work at the moment and studying part - time. As for me I am signed off of work due to ill health. But hopefully all will be fine soon and i can go back waheyyyyyy

Steffee, i did not criticise anyone in my first few posts if you care to read it properly. I said how I did things not how others should. there is a difference.

steffee · 12/09/2005 18:44

Good luck with finding a job then Vaunda, you can pop over and join us on the looking for a job threads... what's your dh studying?

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 18:45

Dropinthe,
camberwell is not as bad as you make out. I have lived here for the last year and never had any trouble. as for the siver buckle i met my dh in there 2 yrs and 7 months ago so even there is not all that bad, well i dunno about now but it wasn't then.

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 18:46

English. As it is his second language.

steffee · 12/09/2005 18:46

Sorry Vaunda, your 3rd and 4th posts strike me as being critical of others - maybe it's just the way I read things though lol

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 18:49

Turquiose
I am most definatly english. I was born in dulwich hosptal in 1975. Although my dads family originate from poland and mums family originate from jerusalum..... my grandad on dads side was polish and my great grandparents on mums side from jerusalum.

Vaunda, I hate to say this (and I haven't read any more of the thread since this morning so forgive me if it has been said already) but you have spent so long defending your parenting, are you sure Karl is still there? You have been almost permanently on Mumsnet since at least Saturday night. I know you said Karl reads Mumsnet with you, but have you checked he is still there?

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 18:52

LAjayzmummy,

you having problems spelling my name.... not to worry it comes to even the most challenged eventually.

dropinthe · 12/09/2005 18:52

I think Camberwell is full of VERY strange people-I go there often enogh as MIL lives in Crawford Road and she likes to see the kids regularly. I find the place horrible.

(..and I live in Plumstead which is not much better before you think I am being a snob but Camberwell is ALOT more menacing and full of psychos.)

Sorry!!

Twiglett · 12/09/2005 18:52

Vaunda

I have to say that the amount of personal detail you have posted is frightening. I seriously think if you are not a troll you should get the posts that identify you and your child deleted. It is a very very bad idea to post personal detail like this to a website.

dropinthe · 12/09/2005 18:53

Whereabouts in Camberwell do you live?

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 18:53

Lonelymum at the moment he is in the bath, then he is coming in here to read his school book and then off to bed as he needs an early night. He is still tired after being out in Hyde park all day yesterday.

zippitippitoes · 12/09/2005 18:53

But you can be on mn and do a million other things at the same time

I hope someone goes to the Chicken Shed anyway

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 18:54

Don't know that one-she is in the middle block of flats-she has lived there for over 20 years-moved here from Ireland and wouldn't leave Camberwell if you paid her!!
DH and I hate her living there and reluctantly take the boys to visit-saying that,he was born and bred there so hates it LESS than I do!

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 18:59

Aloha, do you mean rock steady eddies cafe? with all the elvis piccies up?

dropinthe · 12/09/2005 19:01

The bloke that runs that Cafe is a twat with a big heart-have met him and heard him sing too!

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 19:01

Dropinthe, I can only assume you mean teh crawford estate. As i say i know it extremely well. Crawford school is on crawford road right in the middle, I can see it from my window,

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 19:02

Dropinthe, i don't know. we have never been in there and from the look of recent clients i wouldn't either.

aloha · 12/09/2005 19:03
