How much do you 'ignore' your children?

Have just been out with two families - friends of ours- who have kids about the same age, and I have to confess, I am amzed by the extent to which they actively 'ignore' their children trhoughout the whole afternoon.

By this I mean they seem to 'zone out' from all the various requests/ questions/ constant 'to-ing and fro-ing' that seems typical of under- 6s??

As a result they actively seem to enjoy themselves more, manage to have 'adult' conversations (which I gave up years ago )and it seems that their kids eventually give up and go and sort out themselves whatever it is they want....( which seems like a good thing I suppose)

I can't decide whether I'm just a mug with my kids and let them dominate my life too much... but I simply CAN'T ignore them - it seems really rude and uncaring somehow??

Yes the Crawford Estate-I just don't know the school as DH went to the Catholic school opposite the snooker hall.

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 19:06

Dropinthe, sacred heart school?
that has really gone down hill over the last few years so have many of the local senior schools. Crawford school is a primary school. I don't know much about it though. I moved to the crawford estate last year. it has its ups and downs like most places I likeour flat and once you are indoors the place is what you make it imho.

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 19:14

Aloha, i know where you mean now... i was confused when you said camberwell green then when you said peckham road i was more confused lol that cafe is on Camberwell church street.... It is a nice place although i have not really been there other than in the early mornings when i used to do bootsale.

I've had a skim read of most of this.....wow!

leaving the whos and what ifs aside for a moment.

One question I would like to ask. In all of this Vaunda has been very detailed in her responces to posting. She has detailed her son's class, his illness, the ballet thing, parties, Harry Potter etc etc.

The one thing that she seems not to have commented on (and forgive me if I've missed it....this is a very long thread!) is that those of us who had a very 'adult' upbringing as children (and at least three of us have posted to this effect) felt that it was in someway harmful.

Three adults have posted and said (or words to that effect), 'I was raised as you are raising you son and I feel that this was not helpful to my development'. And she has said nothing, zip, zilch.

I'd be inetersted in her comments, if any

PS Jimjams....one thing is for sure you can spot the 'mental' teachers, that would be all of us!

GeraldGiraffe · 12/09/2005 19:29

no you haven't missed it hmb, she has ignored you

tigermoth · 12/09/2005 19:29

yes, I picked up on that Happymerry, too. I get the impression Vaunda is telling a story ( true or not?) not debating an issue - lots of personal facts, not so much analysis. Her choice I suppose.

I did the queeen of all ignoring your children sins today.... I logged on to this thread at 6.15 am, determined to read it. Next thing I knew, a VERY sarcastic dh (who had just woken up) asked me if ds1 had caught his school bus yet? It was 7.30, ds was still asleep. I had totally forgotten he is now at secondary school and needs to catch a bus... at 7.30! mad drive to school followed

magnolia1 · 12/09/2005 19:30

OMG!! This is still going

I will never get anything done tonight!!

happymerryberries · 12/09/2005 19:31

Tigermoth! Classic!

I could do that sooooooooooooooooo easily.

Fio2 · 12/09/2005 19:33

tbh I have found it hard to get on with my peers and all my friends seem older than me. i was chatting to my friend today on the phone and i said you know sometimes I think i am odd as I doont really have any friends my own age and I find even younger people harder to communicate with often treating them as my younger sisiters/brothers and she said she had never found me odd (yeh right) and that she thought I just got along with people i had things in common with rather than sticking with my peer group

oh what a toshy waffle

vauinda will beon again telling me i am sad pathetic and immature in a minute

vaunda...I am astounded that you have been on this thread since last night and I simply can't get past the many contradictions in your postings.

From the very beginning you have made claims that seem unusual. Unfortunately, I can't take you seriously at all. I don't think it's possible to trust anything you say. I'm sorry, but speaking as an expert in children's speech and language, there is no way your child can have had the pattern of development you described last night. It's just not possible, for many reasons that are too complicated to go into here.

I am also puzzled that, on the one hand, you describe a "model child" who is incredibly mature, yet on other threads, you describe his behaviour very differently.

And the whole royal ballet school has been found to be untrue.

I can't understand the point of you continuing to post. I can only assume that you are enjoying the attention. As you have already described yourself going out to restaurants five nights a week and having sex every evening, I am confused that you are still sitting in front of your PC

Why don't you give it up?

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 19:46

HMB, I don't feel that my upbringing, which was exactly the same as my sons has done me any harm. I did not deliberatly ignore your question I do apologise. I do know some people found their up bringing hard but i loved my life and still do.

noddyholder · 12/09/2005 19:54

How old is your son now?Is he 6 and are you 30?

harpsichordcarrier · 12/09/2005 19:55

yes indeed Pruni all getting a little dull now though clearly not as dull as the diversion about Camberwell
almost makes me nostalgic for the good ole Milupa days....

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 19:56

Mogwai, we did previously go out 5 nights a week. In the past and mostly before i met my hubby, we still go out but not as frequently. But he still goes out with my adult friends.

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 19:57

Noddy, he is 7 and i am 30.

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 19:58

GGG, I know benhill road just up the road from me. opposite St Giles church.

mogwai · 12/09/2005 20:01

I get it!

It's an "I know that road" thread

Ok....who knows Alexandra Road in Reading?...The county arms near the Royal Berks Hospital.....

Does anyone know Kendals in Manchester? It's on Deansgate, almost opposite Waterstones.....

harpsichordcarrier · 12/09/2005 20:03

PMSL Mogwai...

WideWebWitch · 12/09/2005 20:03

Just skimmed this, goodness, do people think Vaunda is a purple flowery plant?! Ha ha.

zippitippitoes · 12/09/2005 20:05

Vaunda for what it's worth i think you do not deserve the rough ride you're getting

have you found that science site i mentioned on another thread earlier

zippi...she knows we think she's not telling the truth

she keeps posting

she ignores things she can't find a reasonable response to

I agree, at times, the thread has got a bit nasty, there's no need for that... but........she's not telling the truth, and that pisses people off.

Camberwell? Perhaps the Camberwell Carrot has something to answer for (if you recognise this reference, you've seen the film.....)

zippitippitoes · 12/09/2005 20:12

Truth is subjective

No one tells the truth there is no such thing
