How much do you 'ignore' your children?

Have just been out with two families - friends of ours- who have kids about the same age, and I have to confess, I am amzed by the extent to which they actively 'ignore' their children trhoughout the whole afternoon.

By this I mean they seem to 'zone out' from all the various requests/ questions/ constant 'to-ing and fro-ing' that seems typical of under- 6s??

As a result they actively seem to enjoy themselves more, manage to have 'adult' conversations (which I gave up years ago )and it seems that their kids eventually give up and go and sort out themselves whatever it is they want....( which seems like a good thing I suppose)

I can't decide whether I'm just a mug with my kids and let them dominate my life too much... but I simply CAN'T ignore them - it seems really rude and uncaring somehow??

ghosty · 12/09/2005 12:35

AND, Vaunda, seeing as you have been around the school for so long and know so much about statementing, you of all people should KNOW that the term 'mental disabilities' went out with the Ark ...
Tsk, tsk, tsk

Cam · 12/09/2005 12:37

3 is far too young for the Harry Potter films

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 12:37

ghosty and you will also see i have explained why i used that term in an earlier post. go and read.

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 12:38

Cam in your opinion maybe.... he asked to watch it and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He now has read all but the last book as well.

codsicle · 12/09/2005 12:39

ROFL

foxinsocks · 12/09/2005 12:45

thinking about it now, ds must have been 3 when he saw Harry Potter (bad mummy) but at home on video while his older sis was watching - don't think he particularly 'got' any of it though

didn't think HP was that frightening really

Cam · 12/09/2005 12:45

But Vaunda, were you ignoring him while he was reading the books

Prettybird · 12/09/2005 12:45

My ds also watched - and loved Harry Potter at 3. In the same way, he (just turned 5) now watches and loves Doctor Who.

BTW - I'm in the "ignoring" camp: ds is very good at occupying himself and needs to be, as I am not good at "playing" with him myself: I find it very difficult to maintain the patience (and have a low boredom threshold) for playing "baby games".

Every so often, I try and redeem myself by getting ds to make biscuits or cakes with me. Or I'll play hide and seek for a (wee) while.

aloha · 12/09/2005 12:47

I could have read HP at seven.
Vaunda, you do not sound English in the way you write.

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 12:48

Cam i wasn't ignoring him.... he was reading in the room with me and his dad.

foxinsocks · 12/09/2005 12:49

actually, I was giving Vaunda the benefit of doubt till I saw she admits to having sex every night and some mornings on the 'how often do you do it' thread. That I can't believe, but if it is true, Vaunda, you are one busy woman - what with Karl, daily sex sessions etc.!

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 12:49

PrettyBird
my son also loves Dr Who, the thing that really made his birthday was meeting the cast while they were filming close to our home on the same day.
