Ok, here goes.
Coca Cola are running a promo via their Dr Pepper brand just now on facebook. It is called 'status takeover' and involves the application putting an embarrassing or funny status on your FB page.
My 14 yo dd participated and I was HORRIFIED to log into FB and see that her status read - 'I watched 2 girls one cup and felt hungry afterwards'. For anyone who doesn't know what this means, please stay ignorant, for those who do, you can imagine how I felt. This was compounded later on when a quick search through dds internet history revealed she had tried to find out what it was for herself. Thankfully, our ISP has a wonderful child filter!!
So, after various emails and phonecalls to CocaCola marketing I have been offered (quite offensively) as way of compensation, a night in a hotel and theatre tickets for the West End. Fat lot of use to me, we live in Glasgow.
So, how do I proceed? ASA? I am absolutely fizzing with rage and disgust, and want a full apology and explanation. CocaCola are saying they use outside marketing teams for different brands and it's outside their jurisdiction. Help!?

AvrilH - thanks for link. Three N American papers as far as I could tell, plus Malaysian and Indian papers, up to midnight yesterday, had stories concerning this.

Wonder if Sky will do more, seeing as it had TV coverage around 19:15 yesterday (comments were posted for anyone who missed Justine being interviewed).

Chiabom - about only thing I saw which I agreed with in your post was 'I agree, they should not have actually said that on your daughter's profile'

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 20/07/2010 13:43

Jimbo - whispers someone already complained to the Police about Dittany. Notorious bigot that one. you didn't hear it from me

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about this subject:

edam · 20/07/2010 13:45

Jimbo - what you actually mean is "waaaah! 'Snot fair! They don't agree with me!'

Your 'arguments' are crap hence people don't agree with them. Can only suggest you get some better arguments.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 20/07/2010 13:45

Oh - and what is you position? Short sentances please.

Mouseface · 20/07/2010 13:45

Have finally managed to read this thread and well, just.......

I may add to that once I pick my jaw up off the ground.

But for now.........

Jimbo1531 · 20/07/2010 13:46

Or suggest nothing at all?

Jimbo1531 · 20/07/2010 13:47

TheCoalition, I'm pretty sure flooding is frowned upon in most forums.

Well, you have replied to precisely one of my posts, Jimbo. You are very happy to get hoity-toity when posters tell you to fuck off, and complain that no one will engage with you in your reasonable and logical arguments, but you've ignored almost all of my points, including direct questions, even though I haven't engaged in any personal abuse. In fact you've skipped over my questions to respond (am tempted to add "gleefully" here) to any perceived slight in the posts either side, while complaining that no one wants to discuss this with you properly.

So let's try again...

Do you at least accept that normalisation of hardcore porn as part of mainstream culture and the pornification of women is something that plenty of people do see as a "big issue" affecting millions? Clearly you don't think it's a big issue yourself, but with your love of seeking out groups with different views from yours for sparkling intellectual debate do you accept that it's a view sincerely held by others?

Do you accept that people can care about more than one "big issue" at a time?

Do you have some particular way of telling for "certain" which participants in the sex industry are or are not subject to coercion?

Do you think that multinational companies should have the spotlight shone on them when they knowingly or with wilful negligence indulge in unsavoury practices, whether that be targeting porn references at children, adding carcinogenic substances to food, or sloppily releasing poisonous gases into residential areas of developing countries?

Do you think that people should take positive action to help others support causes that they believe in?

So what IS your position then? bats eyelids

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 20/07/2010 13:48

I seem to be channeling Paxman - HELP!

BitOfFun · 20/07/2010 13:49

I don't think the boys are contributing anything useful to this thread, so I'm leaving it now as it has been taken over by distraction techniques. If another thread starts with some ideas on how to gain more of a response from the mainstream media, then I'll happily contribute. The issue that's important here afterall is how to force brands to take more responsibility.

EggsandBacon · 20/07/2010 13:52

@TheCoalition.

Mouseface · 20/07/2010 13:53

Well said BOF.

Chiabom · 20/07/2010 13:53

Oh, children, you're so quick to jump the gun here on just ignoring me because you can't step out of your narrow mindset. Now, then, I'm not reading 45 pages of your conservative nonsense, it's all the same thing minus a few unique posts here and there, it's just a bunch of angry people who are completely set in there ways saying how pornography is the devil and there's no other way to live life but your way!

Now,

"Why exactly is it damaging to NOT let a 14 year old see people defecating and vomiting on each other?"

Life experience, my friend, being knowledgeable of all of life's atrocities, rather than being an overly sensitive 45 year old who gets squeamish at the very thought of the word "defecation"
I wouldn't want that for my child, I feel restricting your child, lying to your child, "protecting" your child from these things is abusive.

"I certainly wouldn't want my daughter to see that as normal, because it isn't."

Oh, goodness, no it's not, not by any stretch of the word, I'm not asking for anyone to acknowledge that as normal, but simply to not be shocked, appalled and horrified by it, like many of you seem to be.

"Thanks to porn, we have young girls feeling that they have to do things that they don't necessarily feel comfortable doing because men see it as THE NORM, because of porn."

Thanks to porn, we have disgusting old men not raping children.

Also, please understand the context of the entire deal here, they weren't using it in a malignant manner or posting links to the website where this video is held. Also, your child hears far worse things in school everyday, (unless you home school them [another form of abuse] ) so Coca Cola's misdeed is the least of your problems.

"FYI: Use of "Mom" and "Cop" are immediate giveaways. Go away. Really. Unless you have something to add to the discussion and intend to stick around on MN, then don't bother. Go back to reading the papers online and commenting on them on their websites. "

"Mom" and "Cop" is an immediate giveaway? Oh goodness, I should be really formal then, shouldn't I? The word "Cop" was used multiple times in this topic and I'm sure the word "Mom" was too.

"Chiabom - how old are you? 14? Sounds like it."

Anyone who doesn't agree with how you feel is 14 it would seem, so yes, I guess that would make me 14. :/

"Please people, DON'T bother responding to Chiabom....just don't bother "

Yes, remember, if you don't agree with somebody, don't reply to them. Just ignore them, and all your problems will go away. That's a great way to live your life.

Jimbo1531 · 20/07/2010 13:54

TheCoalition - see my previous posts.

BitOfFun - aww, are the men taking over and making you upset? Yes, go start a new thread lined with pink cushions and scented with lavender, where no man would want to tread.

Chiabom you are spectaularly missing the point that it is illegal to promote/give pornography to a minor.

Theochris · 20/07/2010 13:57

Hey Jimbo, where do you get off being so patronising?

Jimbo1531 · 20/07/2010 13:57

Chiabom, finally, someone who shares my views, and can put my words into sentences that make sense and aren't muddled up with anger and frustration. So, what he said.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 20/07/2010 13:57

Chiabom - Ok you've read the thread now. Let me ask you a question.

Is is OK that Coca Cols who whatever you may think about their business practices or industry ARE a trusted provider of approriate material for teenagers used made reference to scat porn in their advertising?

fearnelinen · 20/07/2010 13:57

I'm aware this will soon reach it's limit and I just feel the need to add my two-penneth.
I was one of the blissfully ignorant, I didn't know about 2g1c or even what scat porn was - but now after a quick google and watching just 5 seconds of said film, I am sadly no longer ignorant.
I just cannot believe that there are some people on here that are justifying this as being part of youth culture these days and we should just get used to it. DH and I have been known to watch a bit of porn and certainly I spent my teenage year doing / watching / laughing about things my parents would have been appalled at and I'm sure my kids will do the same, but this is all just so wrong and doesn't deserve a place in our society. Normalising in this way is so dangerous. Of course this child googled it, well done MrsR for having your controls in place. If my daughter saw this, I would just cry and cry for her.
The sex ed. show last night showed teenagers comparing breasts and not one of them (m or f) saw a natural breast as attractive. Jesus how the how are girls supposed to grow up in this society? I didn't even get to the really gross bit but my god, if just 1 girl see's this film and believes that kind of degredation of herself is what is expected of a woman then what hope will she have?
To all those that think it is normal and fine, go to a womens refuge, meet abused women, find out what there view of themself was before entering destructive situations. This kind of use of womens body disgusts me. Does 2 blokes 1 cup exist? (I'm too scared to google that) No? I wonder why.

Jimbo1531 · 20/07/2010 13:58

Theochris, I'd go back over some previous posts if I were you before throwing the word patronising about.
