Ok, here goes.
Coca Cola are running a promo via their Dr Pepper brand just now on facebook. It is called 'status takeover' and involves the application putting an embarrassing or funny status on your FB page.
My 14 yo dd participated and I was HORRIFIED to log into FB and see that her status read - 'I watched 2 girls one cup and felt hungry afterwards'. For anyone who doesn't know what this means, please stay ignorant, for those who do, you can imagine how I felt. This was compounded later on when a quick search through dds internet history revealed she had tried to find out what it was for herself. Thankfully, our ISP has a wonderful child filter!!
So, after various emails and phonecalls to CocaCola marketing I have been offered (quite offensively) as way of compensation, a night in a hotel and theatre tickets for the West End. Fat lot of use to me, we live in Glasgow.
So, how do I proceed? ASA? I am absolutely fizzing with rage and disgust, and want a full apology and explanation. CocaCola are saying they use outside marketing teams for different brands and it's outside their jurisdiction. Help!?

BalloonSlayer, you asked for a list. I gave you a list. I didn't say "no one here checks for these ingredients" did I.

StrawberrySam, thanks, I was quite shocked that MrsRickman felt able to take on a multi-national company, but completely unable to respond to a post on a forum. Very strange.

CiderItUp, I have nothing to do with Dr Pepper or the ad agency they employed. I'm not from a newspaper. I just want to get my opinion across, as does everyone on this forum.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 20/07/2010 13:26

Chiabom - read the thread.

oh for God's sake, everyone, it's fazed

If I read "phased" one more time I will go barmy.

aaaargh

seapig · 20/07/2010 13:28

Please people, DON'T bother responding to Chiabom....just don't bother

WurzelBoot · 20/07/2010 13:28

I think I'd like to be MrsRickman when I grow up.

And I'd like ProfessorLayton to be my Mum.

I didn't realise MumsNet tries to restrict thread-length to 1000. Apologies for mine and I'll stop arguing with Jimbo here. I don't believe he's actually worth it and I think he is here primarily to bait people.

Well done indeed, MrsRickman. Though it might not feel that way to you, I'm astounded by how calm and in control you are being about this whole thing, including the stupid, pathetic attacks you're getting here and elsewhere. You are twice the person I'll ever be!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 20/07/2010 13:28

"Half the time everyone complains about the 'nanny state' we live in, and the other half of the time they're complaining something bad happened to them because no one told them it might."

But what are you advocating, Jimbo? You seem to be very quick to criticise others' views, but from what you've posted yourself you seem to think both that people shouldn't complain or protest about anything but just look out for themselves more and that we should be caring passionately and taking positive action about issues affecting other people. And both that large multinational companies are evil and unscrupulous and happy to put their resources behind misleading people and that no one should challenge them or seek to publicise this. There seems to be a certain nebulousness to your worldview as expressed here.

thumbwitch · 20/07/2010 13:29

Chiabom - how old are you? 14? Sounds like it.

Theochris · 20/07/2010 13:29

I'm stunned that there is anyone arguing that this could ever be OK.

It is never OK for a big multinational to send minors references to this kind of material. It is a disgrace and the fact that some on this thread think this is an opportunity for Mrs R to talk to her daughter about sex is just embarrassing. I wonder if it breaks any obscenity laws?

The internet is a wonderful thing but wow it makes you realise there is some truly depressing stuff and people out there. The way women are apparently viewed by some is just grim.

BitOfFun · 20/07/2010 13:30

Interesting that the responses are being split up into Angry or Activist. I think they need another category- perhaps Asinine?

Jimbo1531 · 20/07/2010 13:31

Unfortunately, TheCoalition, Dittany and ProfessorLayton seem too defensive and childish in their arguments. Don't tell people not to read Chiabom's post, surely it's for people to make up their own mind is it not?

BalloonSlayer · 20/07/2010 13:31

OK Jimbo, fair point.

You didn't say all of us, you asked "how many of you feed your children . . ."

So your answer is: NOT MANY

Therefore your analogy is too weak to be taken seriously

Therefore you need to try again.

Or better yet pour yourself a nice glass of Dr Pepper and drink it while shaking your head and saying "Chuh! Women!"

What bridge did Chiabom crawl from under?

Why exactly is it damaging to NOT let a 14 year old see people defecating and vomiting on each other? I certainly wouldn't want my daughter to see that as normal, because it isn't. Thanks to porn, we have young girls feeling that they have to do things that they don't necessarily feel comfortable doing because men see it as THE NORM, because of porn.

The disgusting thing is, if this would have referenced child pornography or incest, there would STILL be people coming on here and defending it.

MarshaBrady · 20/07/2010 13:33

Why do you think Coke responded so quickly Chiabom? Because they knew they were in the wrong and MrsR is right.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 20/07/2010 13:34

Jimbo1531 - WHAT is your position? I might be being very dumb but I still don't understand what you are saying. Please use short sentances.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 20/07/2010 13:35

We shouldn't respond to Chiabom because they clearly haven't read the thread. So we should wait until they have done so and come back and posted a more considered response. Otherwise we are just going to repeat ourselves as all their points have already been made.

Jimbo1531 · 20/07/2010 13:37

SugarMousePink, I don't think racism is particularly welcome here. Unless you all agree with it just because I disagree? It wouldn't surprise me.

I'll stop now.

Jimbo1531 · 20/07/2010 13:40

You know, maybe I should be complaining to the owners of mumsnet that there are racist comments being posted on their forums. Really kick up a stink over it. Racist comments that children can see. I'm sure the media would seem more interested in a forum comprised of racist mums than they seem to have been over the Dr Pepper incident!
