doormat - add a www.

I nearly didn't read this thread as certain viewpoints on this subject wind me up.

But to pre-empt them: I read recently that the number of assylum seekers who are given assylum is around 45%. That is, 45% of assylum seekers actually do fit the government's definition of being in need of assylum and can prove it - some genuine assylum seekers are rejected.

However while we are processing their claims, we shove these people into anywhere available - in some cases half decent housing, in other cases shared houses with no thought for who the assylum seekers might be sharing with or what the local people's housing is like and then wonder why trouble occassionally flairs up.

A complete rethink is needed.

beetroot I will try in a minute.
Lucy123 I think that is quite sad and disgusting. As I said earlier the genuine needy ones yes welcome them but the others can bugger off.
If I have portrayed myself as uncaring I am not.

Can I just ask a question, is the refugee supposed to seek asylum within the first safe country they reach?

oliveoil · 10/07/2003 13:25

Do you know what London is called ooop North? Londonistan, due to overload of asylum seekers apparently, wouldn't know as I try to stay away from the place.

Lots of grey areas in this one, but am on the side of doormat, genuines yes, blaggers bog off.

Am not expert so am keeping well out of this one.

doormat · 10/07/2003 13:25

I dont know how to decide. The relevant authorities should know how to do that.If it was up to me I would take the needy in myself.
It is sad that people get treated like that but what I am saying is the Govt should look after its own first.
Very good question though how would you decide???And how do the govt decide.

The policy framework for approaching international migration to Britain (forcing people into categories like 'bogus' asylum-seeker; 'economic migrant' ) needs to be overhauled. People needing political asylum should be given it - surely this is a basic attribute of a civilized society? But we also need to face up to the realities of international migration. Many people migrate because of the vast differences in levels of income and economic development in different parts of the world. Wanting a better life (being an 'economic migrant' ) is a legitimate aim and it would be much better if we recognised this and implemented a quota system. Moreover, there are labour shortages in many industries and these will intensify with our ageing population.

I really hope sml (where is she?) doesn't mind me doing this but she posted this about 18 months ago and it was so good, thought I'd copy it here:

whymummy · 10/07/2003 15:22

a couple of months ago we met some lads in a pub in london they said they were italians but i knew straight away that they weren`t when i questioned them they got really agressive and said they were albanians they then started insulting dh,they said that this country was sh*t but the benefits they were getting were great and that english people were really stupid,i had to drag dh from the pub as he was going to kill them,i also worked in london with a romanian girl, her, her family and friends had spanish passports and they looked as real as mine, they work 2 or 3 jobs and were claiming housing benefit and income support, now them to me are nothing but parasites and should be sent back to their countries!

Enid · 10/07/2003 15:30

Very excellent post sml via Tinker

I think the reason that so may asylum seekers are not coming to the uk (as in your stats) is because of migration because of war and famine - this is on the scale of things a huge amount.

Things that irritate me are:

Iraqis coming over here whilst our boys are still trying and dying to secure their freedom and liberty. This also happened with what used to be Yugoslavia.

If I were oppressed to the extent that I wanted to move countries I would go to the first friendly country I came to - we do not boarder any countries from which anyone should want to claim asylum.

The sheer volume that are coming - and on the grand scale of things, yes I know it is not a lot but on the grand scale of things Britain is a dot in the ocean and in those terms we are taking in lots!!

Can I just ask what we do about places like Iraq - I presume some of you thought the war was unjust - what do we do just ignore these breaches of human rights and cruelty and keep taking in the asylum applicants from countries like this or go in sort it out (although not too good a job has been done) and then send them back to their own country??
