Next time I go to the supermarket (probably tomorrow, I seem to be unable to shop only once a week ) I'll have a look if Galeffi is still on sale... I usually see digestivo Brioschi on the shelves (my db swears on it).

A pocket of shortbread is 2.99 euros here! We also get digestive and milk choc digestive and hobnobs!

AuldAlliance · 23/03/2010 11:57

I have come crashing down to earth with a bump.

In that pretty jar, it's just the same stuff as these isn't it?

Not very exotic at all.

TheMysticMasseuse · 23/03/2010 12:00

you'll more likely crash down with a burp Auld

(excuse pathetic joke)

TheMysticMasseuse · 23/03/2010 12:03

In the local supermarket (I live in Switzerland), british food (such as marmite and salt and vinegar crisps) can be found in the "exotic" aisle, alongside indian and thai.

Franca, LOL at acetone, another of those quintessential italian diseases, no one has ever heard of it north of the alps, yet i remember constantly having to pee on a stick as a child to check whether i had it (to my knowledge, i never did!)

OK. I had an itnerview this morning. i think it went well. Only now that the sun is shining and the lake looks gorgeous i am not sure i actually want to go to work .

i think i need a head doctor

Rosa · 23/03/2010 12:04

MM LOL I can't drink it but then again I can't drink soluble asprin either especially the fizzy jobs...
Spring here today am getting with the bank. They said a week it is now 2 weeks and they are saying 'technical times' prossibly dopo pasqua the dirretore is never there and the guy we were dealing with is on hols. They have all the carte and the sellers are getting a bit frustrated and I can understand them.........This is another part of Italy I really HATE !

Francagoestohollywood · 23/03/2010 12:05

MM >

Never heard of Andrew's Liver salts Auld, but yes, it might be the same thing

TheMysticMasseuse · 23/03/2010 12:09

IMO nothing beats a good swig from the Gaviscon flask

Francagoestohollywood · 23/03/2010 12:11

Masseuse, I was convinced - after 8 blissful yrs in the UK - that acetone had become a forgotten illness even in Italy. But no! There are bunches of mothers desperately clinging onto it!

Rosa, what a pain, I'm so sorry. Banks suck here

Sputnik · 23/03/2010 20:27

I spent years wondering wtf acetone was, I actually figured it out very recently because of doing Atkins, the aim of which is to go into ketosis.

We got to see a pediatrician for DS today, he said there is definitely a problem and refered us to a neurologist. He also said a lot can be done though. Plus he gave us a referral for the speech therapist so we can get going on that.

We are actually seeing some progress already with stuff she told us to try on friday. We have got him naming some objects and he actually asked me for a banana, which is great but on the other hand he really is behind and should ave done that kind of stuff long ago. It's hard not to feel really anxious about the whole thing tbh.

Sputnik · 23/03/2010 20:28

Ah yes Rosa, we went through that whole thing with the bank too, what a pain.

Francagoestohollywood · 24/03/2010 10:08

Sputnik, of course you must be so anxious. I hope no one expects you to be lighthearted/chilled about it.

I think you made so much progress in only a few weeks, putting things in motion and starting to see specialists etc. Was the paed English or Italian?
And for your ds asking for a banana... ah the power of food...

Sputnik · 24/03/2010 12:35

Yes we are working on biscuits now.

The paed was Italian but worked in the US, his english was perfect, and the neurologist he's referred us to also worked in the US.

He was very nice, I kind of warmed to him when DH asked him about DS's rather limited diet and he said not to worry at all, vegetables were food for grown-ups!

Rosa · 24/03/2010 12:47

SPut that is good news and great for finding people that you feel good with ....Hope he does ok with the biscuit request.
Very spring here today. DH took Mrosa for vaccinations this am as I was teaching I felt sooooooo bad ! Next month MMR .....

Francagoestohollywood · 24/03/2010 20:08

Yes, very springy here too (though rain is forecasted for tomorrow, grrrr), we spent hrs at the park, I'm now very tired

Sputnik, yes, I'd expect 'younger" generations of Italian drs to speak a decent english. Glad to hear that this one seemed so sensible re the diet

How's minirosa feeling after injections? (rosa, don't feel guilty!!)

Camomilla · 24/03/2010 21:25

rosa, you just reminded me I need to book DD's MMR booster (why can't they just send a reminder, they do for everything else!!

anyway, hello everyone. just been busy knitting and finally I've finished my first project, a beautiful shawl if I say so myself, very proud of it and now will see if mum's got any yarn I can steal

Sputnik, glad things are "in moto", although you must be worried, at least it sounds as if you have good specialist following DS and must be nice to see some progress already.

was a gorgeous day here, raining now though, so I guess my lovely coral mac will have to stay in the wardrobe a little bit longer... still, the dc had a lovely pm outside while dp mowed the lawn, but dd had a mother-of-a-tantrum when he brought her in!!! can't remember ds having tantrums like that at her agae!!

hope the interview went well MM

what's acetone? I only know it as nail varnish remover

Francagoestohollywood · 24/03/2010 21:35

wow camo congratulations on finishing your first knitting project! I'm envious (my last knitting project is languishing somewhere in my old bedroom at my parents!)

are you telling us your childhood hasn't been punctuated by bouts of acetone? You must be a lot younger than myself . No idea what it is exactly. I think it can be caused by high temp, maybe related to glicemia? BOH! Basically you had to pee on a stick which could turn into various colour. If you had acetone you had to eat riso in bianco

Camomilla · 24/03/2010 22:08

it's soooo cosy... I'm supposed to block it now, but had to try it... it's grey, in this pattern this, not that you asked, I'm just chuffed I managed to finish it!!

no, never peed on a stick for acetone!

Francagoestohollywood · 25/03/2010 09:48

Oh no Camoooo, the website you linked to doesn't open on the pattern.
Take a pic and post it proudly on facebook camo!!!!

Sputnik · 25/03/2010 13:47

Yes it sounds lovely.

Bucharest · 25/03/2010 13:52

Hello!
So what is acetosis? I always think of nail varnish remover when I hear people suffering with it!
Here the McVities digestives are in the exotic/weird/healthfood/bio/homeopathic aisle, with a big sign that says "despite being called digestives, they aren't" lol.
Am springcleaning computer as disk space is 6% and I'm scared it's going to explode....
Sput- glad things are progressing, sounds pretty impressive actually, how quickly you are getting seen.

AuldAlliance · 25/03/2010 14:27

Buongiorno,

I have been shopping. Galeffi is like weak disprin. I am not sure it will transform my life, really.

Acetone exists in France, too. Another transalpine bond between us, along with diminutive, dangerous political leaders.

All about acetone (I had to google):

It is generally a sign of some illness (earache, gastroenteritis or rhinopharyngitis (ie a cold in normal English)).
It affects 2-6yr olds. Symptoms include tiredness and vomiting.

Acetone is a substance produced by the liver from fats, which acts to compensate a lack of glucose when a child has digestive problems. The breakdown of these fats gives the child's breath a characteristic odour, like nail varnish remover or sour apples.

Its presence can be detected in urine, using reactor sticks (available from your chemist over the counter).

This translation was brought to you by the Franco-Scoto-Italian information service in Provence.

Bucharest · 25/03/2010 15:04

Oh, so it is connected to nail varnish lol....Thanks for that AA!
Roffling at bonds between us, your diminutive leader significantly more hirsute than ours though!

Francagoestohollywood · 25/03/2010 16:54

Lol Auld!!! thank you for the exact definition for acetone. We've been on and off debating acetone from the very first threads of Little Italy, some 3-4 yrs ago...

Therefore, you can consider yourself a francophone member if LI . So what else did you buy Auld?

Bucharest at"despite being called digestives, they aren't" .
I have to say that they are being more "worldly" (is this the right expression?) at my Esselunga. The digestive are in the biscuits aisle and I've recently found baked bins near the "normal" fagioli (I bought a can for ds who's always liked them.

Sputnik, has season 5 arrived?

Francagoestohollywood · 25/03/2010 16:55

baked bins ? Beans!

Sputnik · 25/03/2010 17:12

Ah yes, it arrived last friday, thanks
Some supermarkets here have the digestives in the normal biscuit section and some not. Baked beans are still firmly in the exotic section if you find them at all though (prefer a nice can of borlotti myself anyway). I think these things trickle southwards.
