Hello, welcome, benvenuti

OP posts:
Francagoestohollywood · 04/12/2009 17:43

No, I'm not sure I'd want cameras in nidi or asili. I want to be able to trust these places to be good places for children.
This was a private nido, with no kind of check and I don't think that the teachers were really "abilitate" like those who work in nidi comunali.
I don't really want to live in a world where there are cameras to check on people doing their job with love, care and commitment .
I'm too idealistic, vero?
We've been lucky enough to have found a really great nursery in the UK, and that dd's scuola materna (comunale) is fab, fab, fab.

Francagoestohollywood · 04/12/2009 17:49

On a more cheerful note, I'm really sitting on my hands to avoid posting on some baby names threads at the moment... WALON> Call him Walon!!!

SuiGeneris · 04/12/2009 19:36

So we have all been Christmas shopping then. Mine ahs been mostly online, for beached whale reasons. If you are interested, JL seems to have added a lot of reductions this afternoon. I filled my basket in the morning, then went to have lunch and a nap and came back to find the computer had crashed. Refilled basket and found three items reduced from the morning (one by 50%).

Received my first fruit and veg box this afternoon. I think I might have picked the wrong size: the fridge is now completely chokka and I'll need to embark on a cookathon (after some time on google to identify some of the stuff we have received and find recipes for it)...

TheMysticMasseuse · 04/12/2009 20:26

LOL at Walon!!! Please please post it franca (but also change your name to.... FRANCAGOESTO BALTIMORE!).

What should i change mine to? TheWestsideMasseuse?

and LOL SG at identifying veg in your organic box. thats why i don't get those deliveries, it's 60% potatoes, 10%onions, 10%cabbage and 20% a mix of suede/turnips/unidentifiable tuberi.

am supposed to be working (WTF? as our friend Jimmy would say? i have 3 working days left and i still give a fuck?!) but instead i am sitting here drinking beer and getting slowly drunk while waiting for dh to come back...

TheMysticMasseuse · 04/12/2009 20:29

on a more serios note- refusing to read about the asilo degli orrori. it's too horrible to contemplate.

(but remember distinctly that when iw as a child in rome at the asilo delle suore once a little boy had his hands tied with brown tape for being naughty... shudder)

AlliwantforXmasisMcnultysbum · 04/12/2009 21:06

Oh, I almost posted on the What names go with Alife and Evie to suggest the name D'Angelo. You do it Franca, you have clout on mumnset, I am too scared.

Francagoestohollywood · 04/12/2009 21:32

Hello SG, at identifying veggies... I'd make a minestrone, I think...

Masseuse, you have just 3 days left? When is the big move?

I will post, I promise, I need more confidence

Sputnik · 04/12/2009 21:39

My DD is getting the playobil vet too! Agree that site I linked is expensive, but they do reductions up to 50%, probbly not htis time of year though.
I went to Decathlon today looking for shoes for DS and bought a sledge. Then DH came home and said oh I passed Decathlon today, guess what I got? Oh well, we needed 2 really.

Re nappies, I use washables too, well about 50% of the time anyway. No problems here but in the winter you do need a quiet corner to leave them in to dry, pref near a raiator. Liners definitely the way to go to avoid scraping. I got one sized nappies and was given a few too, must have saved a fortune between 2 DCs.

Looks like my sister might be getting me season 1 of The Wire, probably on condition she can borrow them!

Francagoestohollywood · 04/12/2009 21:42

Sledges ! Aren't sledges one of the most beautiful things ever? I hope it snows soon Sputnik .

Butt, how's pippi?

SuiGeneris · 04/12/2009 21:43

MM: that was what we expected. DH warned me this morning to find lots of recipes for potatoes. In reality we got: tomatoes, pachino tomatoes, peppers, spinach, coste (I think), erbette (sorry, no idea what the English is- and identification via google is also not definitive), walnuts (v fresh, v lovely, had lots this evening), clementines, sage, marjoram and, as-yet-unidentified, (1) a curly herb that could be dill and (2) a salad that round, white, green and red (similar to radicchio, but only about 20% red; suggestions gratefully received). Which ironically now means I need a top-up shop for some potatoes and onions.

Asilo story quite worrying. Went to visit an asilo earlier this week and it looked nice, but one does wonder what happens when no parents are there- especially with children who cannot talk yet. For some reason nuns would make me feel more at ease about it (went to a lovely Montessori asilo run by nuns, where I remember being very happy and eating v well)...

Francagoestohollywood · 04/12/2009 21:43

sorry, Bum

SuiGeneris · 04/12/2009 21:48

Interesting discussion about nappies- I never seriously thought about reusables, but at the antenatal class on Monday they were pushed quite hard. Trouble is, the person doing the pushing has presented other matters in a rather unscientific way before and argument for reusables, as presented by her, was partly environmental and partly based on not wanting babies' bottom near to unidentified chemicals. She then went on to say that for the same reason one should use thick pure cotton sanitary pads/tampons rather than the main brands. Again, had a look at those in the supermarket, but they hardly looked attractive, so have never tried.

Why have you chosen re-usables? Do the children look happy in them? Don't they end up with a wet bottom a lot of the time? And how about leaks?

Francagoestohollywood · 04/12/2009 21:56

I think the only convincing argument about re-usable is the not throwing away all those disposable ones... which is a pretty big argument! I still feel guilty for not having been resolute enough to buy re-usable...

SG, I do recommend to use real cotton sanitary pads after the birth, they do make a difference and irritate the area less. If you have someone in Italy willing to post some to you, I really recommend Presteril (in farmacia)

Sputnik · 04/12/2009 21:59

Actually for small babies, when they're doing lots of liquidy poo, reusables leak far less than disposables. I frequently had poo up the back scenarios with disposables, esp DS who could poo with the force of a hurricane, I can honestly say that never happened in washables, as the outer wrap is quite elasticated at the top.

IME when they're little you have to change nappies of whatever kind so often they don't really get wet through. Later on though they are more likely to get damp and you have to change more frequently, which is a PITA.

I chose washables for environmental and economic reasons, I have heard there are worries about the gel in disposables but never looked into it. I sill use disposables at night and often when going out, for convenience.

Sputnik · 04/12/2009 22:02

Are any sanitary products attractive, in fact? Maternity ones in particular?
YY, Presteril all the way

Francagoestohollywood · 04/12/2009 22:06

Yes, I agree with sputnik. To be honest I've never registered the gel thing.

Presteril is the way to go. Nuvenia e ti muovi sicura, nuvenia e ti muovi sicuraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I'm off to bed, buona notte

TheWestsideMasseuse · 04/12/2009 22:07

i thought about disposables for about 10 minutes. then got too scared of it all, and basically lazy. maybe with baby no 3...

[masseuse goes to welcome dh back home with mischievous babymaking ideas]

notte ragazze

Francagoestohollywood · 04/12/2009 22:08

You can have a third baby, but I'll nameit Masseuse, ayight?

SuiGeneris · 04/12/2009 22:12

It turns out I have about 30 Chicco Mamma-Donna. Are they any good? And how many does one need? They seem enormous and unwieldy, which makes me wonder whether they will fit into normal underwear, but I do understand that padding may be a good thing, at least in the early days.

Sputnik: interesting point about leaks- certainly worth looking into then. But don't they give you much extra work?

Sputnik · 04/12/2009 22:25

Hmm, maternity pads you will need more than you think. 30 probably not enough. I used these sort of fishnet disposable pants the first few days. I have heard lots of people on here reccommend cheap grany knickers from Primark r whatever you can chuck out aterwards.

Re extra work I am a seriously lazy person but it never bothered me. That said, for the first month or 2 with both mine I used disposables, a)because IMO you have enough on your plate with a newborn, birth recovery etc and b)they looked seriouly huge and unwieldly. Plus both of mine were summer babies and they just looked too hot.

Camomilla · 04/12/2009 22:28

finally connection working again...

SG, lol at the veg box, ordered it once, but wasted half the stuff as I had no idea what it was!

re nappies - I didn't use reusables with ds, just a bit from when he was 18mo as I didn't know they existed really and then I was a bit sceptical, but found them great for his sore bum. I so wished I'd used them from day 1 though because he really suffered from bad nappy rash. I had soooooooooooooo many wee and poo leaks with ds (dispos), but that may just be him. with dd, only 2 poo leaks with reusables, both times she was in her bumbo seat, more with disposables (and used far less disp than reusables). bum's always dry - some nappies, like our "main" ones have microfibre/fleece inners so they work as a barrier, letting wee through but not back up, otherwise you use fleece liners (I cut up a cheap ikea blanket). the thing I found though is that you need to try them on your baby, as they suit different shape babies and the choice really is overwealming, especially as you can only get thme mainly on-line (I tried loads, but the great thing is you can buy them secondhand and re-sell them). I'd say I chose them first because of trying to have less nappy rash, and second environment and landfill (and the cutness). don't find them extra work really as I just bang them in the washing machine with whites and especially the "all in two" ones are basically like disposables. other advantage is that DD is speedy gonzales at taking her dispos off, but can't un-do the snaps in the reusables , so putting a disposable on can actually be a nightmare!

SuiGeneris · 04/12/2009 22:30

Have inherited fishnet disposable pants too- which sound like a good idea. Don't know if we have a primark in the area, but if I see one will have a look too. Disposable knickers and disposable nappies for baby, at least in the early days. Would like to save most of the time for cuddling up with lovely newborn and sleeping- the rest can wait.

And on this note, goodnight everyone!

Camomilla · 04/12/2009 22:30

oh, and depending on types, they're 1-2 deg cent cooler

Camomilla · 04/12/2009 22:34

yes, lots of pads and big pants! don't get tesco's own, very rigid, mothercare ones I found the best
