Hello Kitty yuck yuck yuck... I think deep down I want DD to be a bit of a tomboy. I never cared for dolls and pink things - I was into Transformers, robots, cars, Arsenio Lupin and Barbie (my Barbie was a pilot/doctor though, and thought Ken was a wimp).

My DH approves - and is going forward by getting DD to laugh at the Elements song

Camomilla · 02/10/2009 14:57

I hate winx and bratz!so far DD's favourite toys (a part from her pink fluffy rabbit that never leaves her side) are DS's cars and most of all his black and decker's buider's bench thingy, loves spanners and screwdrivers! she spent about an hour happily playing with it the other night!

hope both dds get better Rosa so you can get some sleep!

MI - now all I hear in my head is "chi lo sa che faccia ha, chissa' chi e', tutti sanno che si chiama lupin, era qui un momento fa, chissa' dov'e, dappertutto hanno visto lupin..." (can't believe it I still remember all the words )

off to school!

TheMysticMasseuse · 02/10/2009 15:47

hello all- am currently ejoying a blissful afternoon being sick in bed came home from work because i am too full of cold to function, and am shamelessly pretending i am not here... girls with the nanny... empty house... i feel bad but not too bad that i don't enjoy it

tanti auguri bucarestina!!!

MI thanks for your post- sometimes i hate myself doing the expat thing about the old country going down the drain, i think it's because it hurts so much to see that "home" is not as perfect as you remember it... but yes, when we go on holidays to the deep south life is sweet, human relations are warmer, and gelato much better!!

i know merendine are really like fruit shoots but am in the only one to have fond memories of girelle? i literally still dream about them. i think my mum only bought them once or twice for us but in my memory they are the food of gods.

btw- i am sure it's been done before... how did we all chose our screen names? sorry being nosey. For me it's a paraphrase of one of my favourite authors' most famous novels.

Camomilla · 02/10/2009 16:35

sorry you're ill, but very of your afternoon home alone in bed...

uffa, DD waking up....

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 02/10/2009 17:02

Just a quickie to let Minerva know that now that I can get real italian Marron Glacee ice cream 10 min from my london home there's no chance in hell I'll be moving back !

Penthesileia · 03/10/2009 15:05

Hi everyone.

Happy belated Birthday, miniBucharest (Bucharestina )!

Have had a horrid week: DH really ill (and I was thinking he had man-flu) and DD with high-temperature for 2 days. Nothing would bring it down. She refused Calpol (she's never taken it). Finally persuaded GP to prescibe paracetemol suppositories which did the trick, thank goodness. She's now all stuffed-up and not her usual self. DH still malingering.

Had to take days off work, which was a bit of a shocker in my first week back. Guilt guilt guilt.

Anyway. Now I'm craving ice-cream....

Re: the underclass thing - I truly think this is a matter of perception. There has always been a stream of social commentary in the West which has critiqued/worried about the underclass. You only need to glance at Dickens, or any 18thC novel, etc. etc. It's just that we've respun it in the 21stC.

gio71 · 03/10/2009 16:12

Oh Penthe what a nightmare for you! What do they have, is it the dreaded flu? Good old suppositories, they really are the best thing to get a quick result and they stop the whole child splattering you with sticky calpol thing (or is that just my ds??). Get yourself a stock of over the counter ones when you are next over here - are they only available on prescription in the UK? Is DH still really poorly. How were work re you taking time off, hope no-one added to your stress there!
Re underclass thing good point re 18th century - Hogarth's Gin Alley says it all. Booze been part of British underclass for long time.
If I get bitten by another zanzara I swear am going to have a nervous breakdown!!!

gio71 · 03/10/2009 16:14

PS Still blame Thatcher however for pushing us backward instead of forward in social terms.
Am off to Coin to check out wedding outfits

TheMysticMasseuse · 03/10/2009 20:12

ooooh penthe poor you and poor dd (and poor dh, although YOU must be exhausted for caring for all of them). I must say am dreading the winter of illnesses etc...

re the underclass, ok perhaps it's always existed but isn't it atrociously sad and wrong that nothing changes???

Rosa · 04/10/2009 10:28

ROll on winter .... As it can only be better ..DD1 cough etc turned into bronchitiis and minirosa is on the same route as dd1 but her febbre is higher and lasting longer. Now this I like about Italy Continuita ...Went at 9am and have antibiotici for both and more aerosol ...just tried that on Minirosa and I think they need to do a portable one ...The second I will do whilst she is asleep !
Somebody was smiling on us as it was our Paed( relief emotion!) who we had seen on Thurs with dd1 .
Only thing is he couldn't prescribe Valium for me !!
MM hope you are feeling better hope the wonderful bed rest did good.
Penthe hope your clan also on the mend!
Gio how did the shopping go?

OP posts:
Sputnik · 05/10/2009 08:43

Sorry to hear about all your sick DDs, hope everyone is on the mend soon. No one been ill here yet, which is a miracle as far as I'm concerned.

Re the Winx/Hello Kitty debate, I would rather give DD hello Kitty stuff if I have to choose. She's only 5 after all. She did choose football over dance as an after school activity though, today is her first lesson.

Re my name, I like Sputnik as it means voyager and I have been around a bit, also like space things. There is also a convoluted explanation involving a former cat of mine. Which author are you talking about MM?

francagoestohollywood · 05/10/2009 10:08

Oh sorry to hear about all these illnesses . There's lots of nasty bugs on top of the dreaded swine flu.
How are you all today Penthe and Rosa?

MM yes, which author?

I used to be a very boring franca70 as I have no imagination. I decided to go for francagoestohollywood, as I dreamt of namechanging to francasaysrelax on particularly animated threads. But I've actually never done it.

I used to like Girella too. And Buondi motta (awful) dipped into tea. I have to say that I do buy merendine, as they come in handy for ds's mid morning snack at school. So I rotate: one day merendina + fruit, another day 1 packet of crackers + one square of dark choc, another day sandwitch etc etc etc...

Rosa · 05/10/2009 10:16

DD1 on the mend thanks Minirosa I don't think we are out of the woods yet ...
Merendine - Like Franca we rotate in this house for pm - Cound be fruit , gelato, yoghurt , Kinder fetta a latte ...( hides), sometimes bread and jam all depends really.
My name runs a bit in the family more on DH side and our boat has that name .
Now Mc Clouds explanation on her name(s) could be interesting I remember her as Med !!!

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 05/10/2009 10:18

Mcc also used to be hothell which I liked a lot!

Oh fetta al latte it's nice. I remember brangelina used to hate anything Kinder

Sputnik · 05/10/2009 10:24

That's sweet about the boat

francagoestohollywood · 05/10/2009 10:26

everythign kinder. Gosh my english is getting worse.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 05/10/2009 10:42

Rosa and Penthe hope dds are better, and you as well!

My name comes from the movie Only You which my friend and I watched when we met here 13 years ago and dreamt of one day meeting our own Robert Downey Junior lookalike DB, Pippi who was my childhood hero.

Franca you should change your name NOW! It is brilliant!!!

francagoestohollywood · 05/10/2009 10:53

Do you think? I was waiting for an extremely controversial thread.
How are things? Are you feeling a bit better pippi?

francagoestohollywood · 05/10/2009 10:55

It's bizarre, I've never ever heard of that movie before you mentioned it Pippi. I wonder if it's ever been showed here in Italy, mah!

Camomilla · 05/10/2009 12:19

hi everyone, hope all the poorly babies & big 'uns are feeling better. here we're still struggling to get a decent night sleep, but never mind...

weather is depressing here, so on the sofa with hot water bottle feeling miserable while dd naps, well, more furious than miserable, after half argument with dp

name, I was various "sunflower" before, kind of a nickname that's stuck for many things (when dp used to be romantic and lovely - not atm ), then fancied a change and I was drinking camomilla, so tthat it was, not very intellectual....

crostatine al cioccolato del mulino bianco on top of my fav list... didn't get to eat many though (we'd occasionally got plain cheap brioss stuff, but mainly crackers)

Rosa · 05/10/2009 12:24

Yippeeee Minirosa could be a pulmoniti ( SP) but its all down to this yucky virus but being so little it taking longer on her we are day 5 of febbre
Called thie Guardia Medica as her breathing was worse ..All yes ALL the paeds are on a course - they could have done half and half no but for our ASL that is far too logical.
ANyway he has increased her meds she hates the antibiotic and we both end up wearing it I don't want to force her so am planning a disguise for the next one !
Nonna took dd1 for pranzo ...You could have knocked me over with a feather all excess kg and me !
I recall how we all met if I remember correctly it was Pippi asking for a traditional brodo recipe and that was 16000 messages ago !!!!

OP posts:
francaghostohollywood · 05/10/2009 12:38

Polmonite? Oh poor little minirosa! Keep us updated rosa!

Yes, i remember pippi asking for brodo!

Camo what happened?

I also love Fonzies...

gio71 · 05/10/2009 12:55

poor minirosa!! hope she is soon on the mend. Anyone seen the thread asking if you can cook pasta in a slow cooker??
Parents meeting this pm. Have decided to give maestra benefit of the doubt as ds has decided he loves her

francaghostohollywood · 05/10/2009 13:01

Does he? Ah bless... Do you think he feels more settled now? I hope the meeting goes well and you get to know the other parents as well.
