Does anyone else by their children designer clothes apart from me?

Hi my ds is 13m and i find it so hard buying nice things for him. Of course he has got a few bits from mothercare, next, marks and spencers and asda but occasionally i would like him to wear something different. These places never seem to offer anything different, they offer babies acting as old men in shirts and ripped jeans.
There are a few children shops near me and i just can't resist it. For ds first birthday he wore an adorable miniman outfit that was expensive but he looked beautiful.
What do you all think about designer baby clothes?

WideWebWitch · 16/05/2005 12:48

verbaudet I think nikcola

ninah · 16/05/2005 12:48

Toothache, I go to the next 2nds warehouse
I tend to be put off by 'designer kids' and am a bit of an inverse snob about it
better not say any more

WideWebWitch · 16/05/2005 12:48

No, it's Vertbaudet

Gobbledigook · 16/05/2005 12:48

nikcola - it's not excessive - its' very easy to spend £100 in there on a batch of summer gear!

Are you trying to spell Vertbaudet? You can get some nice stuff in there - especially for girls - I've got 3 boys though! Nice stuff for boys too.

nikcola · 16/05/2005 12:50

thank you

btw dp spent £100 not me well his credit card did

Toothache · 16/05/2005 12:50

Nikcola - I saw a fantastic outfit for dd in Verbaudet. I haven't ordered anything from the catalogue yet so keep getting discount codes and first order offers so I thought what the heck. Phoned and couldn't understand a word the foreign person in the call centre was saying.... then they said that quickest delivery was going to 14-17 days!! We were going on holiday a week later so I asked if that was the best they would do for me to ensure that I shopped with them again in the future. The woman just said Yes, thats it. So I said forget it and put the phone down. Binned the catalogue after that. I was so pi$$ed off about it. The outfit was so cute and only £16!

nikcola · 16/05/2005 12:51

they do nice shoes they are like baseball shoes with flowers on they are only £8 bargain

tamula · 16/05/2005 12:51

I have a friend who doesnt work, she sits at home and lives off the state. She has just had her first baby and it is designer clad from head to toe, I dunno how she does it, but go figure...

Personally I put money over how cute my baby looks, (which buy the way, she looks at best just out the bath wrapped in a big white towel!) I just refuse to spend over the odds for baby clothes when i could be doing better things with the money. My friends however have bought my baby loads of designer gear and I do enjoy dressing her up in her little expensive outfits but I sooo would not buy her it.

Each to their own, I dont judge what other people choose to dress their kids in, good for them. I believe the type of clothes your baby/child wears is so minor in the grand scheme of things, I'd rather have a well turned out, happy wee baba more than ANYTHING else.

Gobbledigook · 16/05/2005 12:51

Toothache - order on line if you can - mine comes really quickly.

sparklymieow · 16/05/2005 12:55

I buy my kids clothes from Asda, tesco, NCT sales, car boots, primark, ebay, and the charity shop (if they have anything really nice) I did pick up a brand new dress for £4, from the chartity shop that was from the local designer shop and it still had its price tag on, it was £55!!!!!!! I would never even think about spending £55 on a dress for my Dd1. They have nice clothes and are clean each day, doesn't matter that their clothes aren't designer, though DS dd have Addiais(sp??) tracksuits when he was younger. I am 26 and am not over the hill either and like fashion myself...

nutcracker · 16/05/2005 12:55

I agree that if Loulabelle can afford to spend alot on her childs clothes then that is entirly up to her and I have no problem wit that.

IMO it is a waste of money. If i could afford to buy stuff like that I still wouldn't because I would rather put the money towards something useful for my childs future. Wastiung it on clothes that will get dirty and be outgrown withiun weeks is madness.

At the end of the day I feel that Loulabelle was insulting towards anyone who buys their kids clothes from Next, Primark and any other cheap shops.
If anyone disagrees then thats fine but I found it insulting end story for me.

moozoboozo · 16/05/2005 12:55

Personally, I dont see the point in designer clothes, as my ds just pukes down them. My mum bought him som OshKosh dungers when he was born which were the unfortunate victims of a leaky nappy accident, nad were left scarred by an indelible newborn poo stain. He only wore them once. They grow out of stuff so quickly as well. Asda, tesco and Bwise for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

moozoboozo · 16/05/2005 12:57

btw, i too think that next is designer, but then I am just cheap white trash. Now, where did I put that fake burberry dummy? ds looks so cut with it in.

Windermere · 16/05/2005 12:59

I have only bought DS a few designer pieces (all moderately priced), one outfit for his first photos, christening outfit(left it til last min and could not find anything else) and an XMAS present. I also dress him in designer cast off's from a relative. I hardly ever buy him any clothes as he is spoilt rotten by my mum and relatives. When I do buy him stuff I only shop in the sales, mainly NEXT, M&S, Mothercare and H&M.

Most of the stuff my Mum buys him is from Matalan or Wilkersons and they are gorgeous clothes. People do have funny attitudes, most of my friends will only dress their offspring in Timberland or Zara and have refused to dress their babies in clothes that have been bought as presents because they are from Mothercare! Funny thing is DS was wearing a Wilkerson tracksuit and t-shirt the other (total sale price of £3!) and all my friends wanted to know where it is from because they all thought it was cool, I think they would have been appalled if they knew!

robin3 · 16/05/2005 13:00

I'm with Toothache...the original post was fine but to sneer at people who buy at the next sale, then suggest that older mothers wouldn't have a clue about fashion and THEN go on to talk about spending too much money on various items!!!!!!

Everyone knows that there are new threads every day from mnetters wanting tips on how to save money on groceries and deal with debt.

Sorry...anyone is entitled to post whatever they want IMO BUT if you do, expect to take the heat!

roisin · 16/05/2005 13:00

Hmmm... This thread has made me chuckle, but also frown. If someone says on here they're 19 on 13 May, and on 15 May that they're 22, I tend to take with a pinch of salt anything else they write.

Enid · 16/05/2005 13:01

I wouldn't dress either of mine in lots of designer items as I think it looks naff and a bit, ahem, eurotrash. But I do allow mixing the odd tasteful thing with 'normal' high st/online stores

Enid · 16/05/2005 13:01

go to the top of the class roisin

Trampy · 16/05/2005 13:02

Designer clothes,
Designer prices. Rip off. They see you coming!

Give me the high streets anyday.

"Labels" are for inside of clothes, as far as I am concerned.

Lizzylou · 16/05/2005 13:02

Tamula, totally agree, my DS is best when running round naked, all carefree and with a complete lack of self-consciousness....now that is priceless, imagine being that unconcerned with how you look naked!!!
Personally I don't buy designer for my baby boy, if you do, fine, it's up to the individual (and individuals bank balance)...there's really no need for everyone to get all het up!!

lima · 16/05/2005 13:02

You know Winderemere you havce a good point - who the hell notices whether other children are wearing designer clothes or not? I couldn't tell you what was what unless it had MASSIVE logos on it.

Or am I just over the hill and not savvy?

Lizzylou · 16/05/2005 13:04

If it has massive labels on it...then it's prob rip off!

ediemcreedie · 16/05/2005 13:04

I think designer is rather nouveau riche. I don't see how a timberland tracksuit is comfier than any other one.

It must be comfier becasuse of the smugnesss of the parents?

Enid · 16/05/2005 13:05

I'm thinking of bringing out a line of kids t-shirts with massive writing on the front saying:

TESCO

or

PRIMARK

or

WILKINSONS

What do you think?
