Does anyone else by their children designer clothes apart from me?

Hi my ds is 13m and i find it so hard buying nice things for him. Of course he has got a few bits from mothercare, next, marks and spencers and asda but occasionally i would like him to wear something different. These places never seem to offer anything different, they offer babies acting as old men in shirts and ripped jeans.
There are a few children shops near me and i just can't resist it. For ds first birthday he wore an adorable miniman outfit that was expensive but he looked beautiful.
What do you all think about designer baby clothes?

We went to a 4th party a few months ago and there was a little girl there all togged up like a dogs dinner. Anyway, all the kids had their shoes off and were running round the hall. She had these posh boots on - her parents wouldn't let her take them off to play - they said she'd lose them!!!

The same girl came to a playdate at a friends house once togged out in that yukky beige burberry check - tights, skirt, poncho - the lot. So sad!

Fio2 · 16/05/2005 12:36

I buy noanoa clothes for dd from the seconds shop, does that count and are they designer

advocateofthedevil · 16/05/2005 12:36

gdg, you can't tell a person's tone from a written comment. the tone is something you add in all by yourself. there have been enough misunderstandings on mumsnet for exactly that reason. loulabelle buys some stuff at next ffs! if she was implying that it's tatt etc then she was also implying that she buys tatt! not being nasty to one poster at all.

i'll leave you to your designer-buying mother witch hunt now - it's clear that all people who buy designer items are merely bragging abut their disposable income and looking down on those who can not afford to do so. all other clothes are cheap tat.

handlemecarefully · 16/05/2005 12:37

It's interesting what it is acceptable to brag about however...I don't really appreciate bragging of any sort, but I did see a thread a while ago about gifted children (it was a serious thread not a jokey thread asking if you had a child with unusual abilities). I posted something terse and impatient and got asked what my problem was!

nutcracker · 16/05/2005 12:37

Well yep thats exactly how it sounded to me.

I think bragging about gifted children is a more heinous crime

Toothache · 16/05/2005 12:38

It is very sad that people feel the need to spend excessive amounts on clothes in order to feel like they are doing the best for the child. Like I mentioned before we dress out babies for our own vanity!!! Whether you buy 2nd hand, George, Next or Laura Ashley.... as long as the clothes fit and are clean (when they go on!!) then who cares!

Batters thats really sad that the Mum cared more about her versace jacket than her wee girls art work. Bet she just wanted Mummy to be proud.

Loulabelle - I was 23 when I had ds, and I'm 27 now. I don't class myself as over the hill yet! But honestly you must appreciate that you are insulting people saying that you dress your son in Designer gear so he doesn't look like a tramp!!

advocateofthedevil · 16/05/2005 12:38

please tell me where I said "Say what you like a give a shit who you hurt along the way". that is not what i said at all.

Gobbledigook · 16/05/2005 12:41

Bored.

handlemecarefully · 16/05/2005 12:41

Do you remember the thread entitled something like:

Ferrari ??? (can't remember model number as not into cars)- what car seat?

Now that made me laugh! I might try and find it for you

advocateofthedevil · 16/05/2005 12:41

i've been away from mumsnet for a bit and can't believe the level of bitchiness over the last week or so. in general, not limited to any specific posters.

advocateofthedevil · 16/05/2005 12:42

it was a porsche 911 i think, not a ferrari.

nikcola · 16/05/2005 12:43

ive just spent £100 in next for clothes for dd including sandals and jacket is this excessive?????

oh how do you spell vedebate?????????

handlemecarefully · 16/05/2005 12:43

Yes, that was it.

noddyholder · 16/05/2005 12:43

tramp chic is the new black

Toothache · 16/05/2005 12:43

AOTD - Yes but she added that how could anyone be bothered to go to the Next sale when the things are SO cheap anyway!!! Maybe its just being naive to assume that everyone think Next is cheap. I don't! And it's just perhaps a bit more consideration needed than to not start the thread at all.

I know plenty of wealthy people who buy lots of expensive clothes for themselves and their children..... but they don't go about seeking other peoples approval for doing it.

Fio2 · 16/05/2005 12:44

next is dear and tbh I cannot stand their stuff as it takes ages to iron and seem so creasy

handlemecarefully · 16/05/2005 12:44

advocateofthedevil,

I haven't read whole thread, but would say I didn't find anything particularly braggy about loulabelle's opening post and think she should get benefit of the doubt

WideWebWitch · 16/05/2005 12:46

cor, this isn't a scrap about childrens' clothes is it? Tell me it aint so! So totally not worth a fight imvho!

Toothache · 16/05/2005 12:46

HMC - Yeah it didn't start off bragging or insulting at all.

advocateofthedevil · 16/05/2005 12:46

it's actually a scrap about peoples opinions and attitudes rather then the clothes themselves.

Hermione1 · 16/05/2005 12:47

Everyones to there own, perhaps she should have worded it differently so she didn't offend or seem to offend.

WideWebWitch · 16/05/2005 12:47

Oh, ok, I haven't read the thread, just skimmed over it.

Gobbledigook · 16/05/2005 12:47

It didn't start off that way at all but she was a little bit condescending towards Nutty in the middle, that's all.
