OMG Sputnik! Is that your garden! It is AMAZING! Come to our house and sort our garden out pleeeeeeaaaaaasssseeee! Well done you. Kudos, indeed!

LOL @ "need to book his return ticket" - I know the feeling.

Sputnik · 13/06/2009 09:11

No that's not my real garden! It's a product of my imagination.
My real garden is mostly sheer rocks and a few sad plants struggling with intense heat. Then there are some steps bordered with jagged rocks, which just this minute I caught DS trying to ride down on his wheelybug. He is a total thrill seeker.

I do have a nice porch though, strewn liberally with children's junk.

Camomilla · 13/06/2009 09:43

I'm already mentally drained and it's only 9.30!!! he's like a.. OMG complete blackout, can't remember the name in english or italian... see, that's what he does to me, plus DD crying last night and waking up at 5 again this morning, and DS joining us at 6... right, what's that drill thing called, the big one they use on road works?!?! 2 languages and can't think of it...

feeling very guilty [bad mum emoticon], s.how fell asleep for a millisecond with DD-the wriggler by my side and she fell off the bed , I don;t think she got hurt, but it's a miracle she didn;t land on the glass lamp , though she landed on a mountain of unread books on the floor........ can't believe I did it...

Sputnik · 13/06/2009 09:54

Oh Camo, I think we've all had babies fall off the bed. Blame the pneumatic drill!
Perhaps all the crying children will make him as keen to book his return ticket as you.
Forza!

Camomilla · 13/06/2009 10:43

thanks sputnik, it would have bugged me all day, that pneumatic drill.
and don't worry, whether he wants it or not, he's going when we say (and as usual, comes the day before his departure he'll be all moody, trying to find excuses why he should stay - thanks god he doesn't like london - and the day will end with massive row between father and son)

gemwow2000 · 13/06/2009 10:45

hello everyone.

I am not a mum or mum-to-be. I am a student nurse from Newcastle. I was just hoping someone would be able to help me with an assignment due to be handed in next week
I have to give an account, from the patient/client perspective of the role of the midwife. So basically I need someones story of their midwife during and after there pregnancy. Whether it is a positive or nagative experience. In depth detail would be good, seeing as I have to write 2000 words.

Please can someone help me

It would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Penthesileia · 13/06/2009 11:06

gemwow2000 - you picked a pretty random thread to post in!

You'd probably be better off in Childbirth or in the various ante- or post- natal threads, where various MNers post about their midwife experiences, good or bad.

gemwow2000 · 13/06/2009 11:08

thank you Penthesileia, I'm new to this website...still finding my way around.

Penthesileia · 13/06/2009 11:11

God, I am such a dimwit. I thought it was a real garden [not wearing my contact lenses emoticon] . T'is very lovely anyway - have you considered a career in design?

LOL @ your thrill-seeking DS. Have visions of a teeny tiny Evel Knievel.

Camo - sounds all too familiar, although admittedly my FIL doesn't want to stay - likes to fight though...

Oh, and I've been there with the falling off the bed guilt too. DD fell off the bed a couple of times when she got to her rolling stage. She was ok, though... Ooops.

Penthesileia · 13/06/2009 11:14

No worries, gemwow2000! I hope you get the information you need.

Tip: perhaps you'd be better off constructing a list of questions you'd like answered about midwife experience.

I must admit, I'm way too lazy to type out at length my whole midwife "story" (even though it was entirely positive, etc.). I'd probably much more readily respond to a series of questions than try to construct a long post about it. I don't know if it's true of everyone, but it's certainly true of me.

Sputnik · 13/06/2009 11:14

I am so glad I actually get on with my family! Me and MIL have had our moments when we spent too much time around each other, but otherwise I'm really lucky.

Penthesileia · 13/06/2009 11:20

That's great that you get on with them. And really great for your DC.

TBH I get on well enough with the ILs in a superficial way, it's just that DH goes hammer-and-tongs with them (and they him) when they're together. They're perfectly pleasant to me, but it's hard to get on with them IYSWIM when I know how miserable they make DH.

Sputnik · 13/06/2009 11:50

LOL re Evel Kenievel, he is just like that. The first two wheels were over the edge already. It was lucky as I had one of those "hmm it's gone a bit quiet, where's the baby" moments and looked out of the front door to find him on the brink (there is a gate thing but I'd left it open last night)

In fact I am a web designer, and really enjoy the design aspect in the rare cases the client doesn't interfere! It's all been a bit on hold though since DS was born, I should be thinking about moving up a notch again. I do have a new project actually, I'm doing a site for the local town band. They have been going since 1592!

MEMsmum · 13/06/2009 19:51

Hi! I posted in Living Overseas and Gio71 suggested I post here - can someone please explain how the Italian school system works. My sister lives in Italy, has 3 kids the oldest of which is nearly 15 and wants to leave school! Surely he can't leave until he's 16 -

I am struggling to understand how the whole system works (and I can't ask her again - she's kept me well informed, I just can't seem to retain the info!! I'm going to have to take notes!!) - so is it like this:

pre-school from 3 to 5 years
nursery from 5 to 7 years
First school from 7 to 9 years
Middle school from 9 to 13
High school from 14 to 18

Do the kids graduate at 18 with a high school diploma? And why are there so many different types of high school - academies, technical schools, science schools, hospitality school ...

Unfortunately my sister is a single parent (brother in law died 3 years ago) and her mother-in-law is no help. Friends are lovely and try to help and answer questions, but I think there are just some things that as a native you assume people know ... any illumination gratefully received.

Sputnik · 13/06/2009 20:23

Sorry Memsmum, I'm pretty clueless myself despite living here 20 years!
I know the preschool goes from 3 to 6, then compulsory school starts. Goes on til about 10 I think. I'm hazy after that, sorry.

Camomilla · 13/06/2009 22:53

Hi Memsmum,

IT system is similar to the UK in a way: primary (compulsory) school starts at 6, then you have middle school til 15, and that's when compulsory stops, with the equivalent of GCSEs. after that there are various highschools, for more academic ones ("licei") it's 5 years, end of which is the Maturita' (which gives you a diploma), eqivalent of A' levels, but there more comparable to the french bac a laureat (in some, like the language school I attended you also need to prepare a mini thesis too). otherwise there are the technical schools (i.e. to do with electronics/mechanics/it for engineers etc), which can be split in 2 + 3 or 3 + 2 years (second part being specialisation), always ending with the Maturita'. then you also have more "professional" schools, like secretarial, hospitality etc. A' levels/NVQs equivalent, like colleges here. basically in the UK you take the different A' levels/NVQs, in italy you have specific schools aimed at the different "orientations".

so yes, AFAIK he could leave at 15 (there were talks similar to here to raise the age limit, but our "resident" edu expert Franca's just gone on hols, otherwise she'd fill you in better) but he might be convinced in giving the chance to one of the professional schools hopefully (my brother hated school until he started the technical electroteck school, he did the whole 5 years, came out with flying colours and first job he got he got promoted to supervisor within weeks)

hope this helps

Just logging on to say hi, nice and hot in London, and sunny! Lovely after the rain..
I suppose it's going to be quiet on here for a while...

Sputnik · 14/06/2009 21:29

It's getting hotter again here too.
I had a very boring weekend without DH.

Camomilla · 14/06/2009 22:36

yes, very nice day (despite FIL making me mad at times).

DP, DS and FIL got up early to go to the car boot to sell a few things (DS brought a box of his old toys to sell and exchange for new ones, my little entrepeneur ), I joined them later to find DS basically glued to the girl in the next stall . then this afternoon we went for a coffee to one of DS's classmates (we bumped into them yesterday at our local village carnival and found out they only live down the road). came back with one sleeping girl and a sleepy boy who fell asleep on the sofa, so had time to do a bit of gardening and cleaning before ordering a take out (as everyone was shattered)

just booked FIl's return ticket... another 10 days of him [pulling hair out emoticon]

right, off to bed, looooong day/week ahead...

gio71 · 15/06/2009 07:09

hot hot hot here at the moment, we were going to go to the beach this weekend but i couldn't be bothered with the trek. We spent Sat eve down by the Tevere, they have got all the little stores, bars and restaurants up that they have in the summer, is lovely.
Camo only 9 days to go now , are you marking off the days on a calender?

Camomilla · 15/06/2009 10:07

mentally yes! nice and grey again here , wonder how the holidays are going... 5 weeks and I'll be on the beach too...

Sputnik · 15/06/2009 10:29

I think one reason I get on ok with my family is that we never see each other for more than a week!
Corraggio Camo

francagoestohollywood · 15/06/2009 12:16

coraggio camo!
it's beginning to rain in bloody London, che palle, i thought we would escape the big rain in the pipeline for the country.
have been a good girl and feel have kept all my resolutions so far, but mightily pissed off that my summer dresses are too bloody tight, bleah.
i have a good memory of trieste, but was only there for a day.
i hope you manage the camping with the dodgy big toe franca....
Oh, the Tevere is lovely in the summer, what a luxury to take your little one for passeggiate there...
right off to tidy up...[bored stiff emoticon]

TheMysticMasseuse · 15/06/2009 13:38

hello everyone, just checking in quickly to say hi. things are still pretty crp here, i think* we have decided to go, and i am totally depressed. hence i don't think i should be posting as it would end up being a totally introspective, self pitying, depressive tirade.

but i will come back once i feel a bit better... baci a tutte!
