morning everyone and sorry for suddenly disappearing last night.... after going o bed with minimum fuss dd1 woke up crying and wanting to take the wraps off i had to read her books, tell her stories, and sleep in her bed until she calmed down... she then slept ok but is alredy up demanding her "regalo" for sleeping through (we are taking the consumeristic approach to sleep training, you see...)

penthe really, relax on the whole work thing, it is so unbelievably hard!!! i am back at work (have been for 4 months now) and still my brain is not in gear iyswim? i takes a while.. career, like parenting, is a long term game, thats my mantra anyway!

did you ever tell us what field you're in? i don't remember... i have loads of academic economists freinds, and they are happy if they can publish a 20 pages article!

francagoestohollywood · 13/05/2009 09:24

No, I meant Gaslight, where ingrid bergman is driven mad by her husbamd, if I remember well

Oh dear masseuse . I think you are managing the whole situation really well. I hope dd gets used to the wrapping.

francagoestohollywood · 13/05/2009 09:28

for Mccloud. As you can see, the cultural approach is totally different here.

TheMysticMasseuse · 13/05/2009 10:20

FRANCA from what i hear from my friends in italy asili nido are a million times better there than nurseries here. my friend in milan has regular "incontri pedagogici" with the staff at her nursery, who have all got impressive qualification and real commitment.

i am not opposed to nurseries per se, but when i visited our local ones, i just couldn't get my head (and heart!) to agree to leave my precious dd1 there for 11 hours a day... i actually love having a nanny, it makes my life so much easier and less stressful... but agree that after 2/3 years old children need the structure.

TheMysticMasseuse · 13/05/2009 10:20

... of a nursery/school environment. there, i can even complete my sentences!

better get to work now!

McCloudismynewnameforawhile · 13/05/2009 14:09

MM, you are very strong! Have a good day!

Franca had to laugh at the idea that you would get incontri pedagocici from nursery staff around here, they would not know what that means, the staff we saw seemed mostly really bored and fed up, possibly with low level mental issues, we were also a bit shocked about how badly paid they are considering they supervise kids from 8 to 6 .

They should be better valued/trained, oh goodness don't start me. Poor dcs they can just look at me if they want to see somebody bored and fed up . Interesting that the Italian system seems so well organised.

What are dead salts? Can you buy them {thicko emoticon]

francagoestohollywood · 13/05/2009 16:55

aren't dead salts sali del mar morto? Or am I totally out of track?

Yes, I think that when I chose to send ds to nursery (we were in the Uk) our choice was dictated by the fact that in Milan asili nido are so well regarded. I do think the standards are much better here (though I loved our nursery in exeter, it was quite fluffy) and I think it's because many nidi are funded by the council and therefore regulated (the staff needs to have a specific training, for instance) and private nidi need to keep up with it. The trouble is that of course now public funding is less than it should be (which for instance means that memebers of staff are hired temporarily, which means higher turnover, which is no good).

But enough with this. I'm knackered. I woke up at 7 (which is early at the franca's) as ds was going to gita and had to be at school by 8. Then worked. Then the bloody swimming lessons. Then the giardinetti, where I watched one of dd's friends being quite nasty to another little girl and not being adequately told off for it. I'm and a bit shaken, tbh.

francagoestohollywood · 13/05/2009 17:01

oh dear. I thought the first message hadn't been sent (slow connection) and added ramblings...
I'm pazza!

Sputnik · 13/05/2009 17:37

Hmm, I think all these nurseries doing incontri pedagogici are probably from Rome northwards! We have never had anything like that, although the woman who runs ours is lovely and very committed. The nidi communali don-t exist here, and in Rome they are a joke. We visited some friends with a new baby the other day and they were saying there were 30 nursery places for the whole of the centre of Rome.

WHat I would give to be woken at 7!!!

Ah Penthe, sorry I went to bed mid convo yesterday, my Dad was in sociology. He-s retired now.

francagoestohollywood · 13/05/2009 18:09

Yes, I think nidi are virtually inexistent in Southern Italy (also tempo pieno is not as widespread as in the North/centre). In fact the rate of women in full time employment is southern italy is very low.

I should be finish preparing dinner, but I just need to vent a huge arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I think I need a major rant about dh.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 13/05/2009 19:18

franca if you rant about your dh I will rant about mine. I was so cross with him yesterday I got into the car and drove off into the sunset with loud music !

penthe is your dh Umberto Eco ?!

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 13/05/2009 19:19

BTW sat will receive second round of accptance forms, fingers crossed!

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 13/05/2009 19:25

Oh and MM you ARE very strong!! I feel I need to be sectioned if one of the dds wakes up at night ONCE. You've got a lot on your plate and you are dealing with it brilliantly!

francagoestohollywood · 13/05/2009 19:40

Lol at the thought of you driving into the sunset a la thelma and Louise... (actually I remember quite a funny sketch in one of serena dandini's progs in the early 90s called "adelma e luisa", set in rome, adelma e luisa escaping on the raccordo anulare su una 500 )

Oh, it's just the he NEVER FUCKING LISTEN TO ME!!!!

ps; I'm in a much better mood right now, as I had a lovely bedtime with darling dd who's is loooovely.

McCloudismynewnameforawhile · 13/05/2009 19:54

We were up at 5am with dd screaming teething, then I had the runs, then dp got on my nerves for leaving his effing shoes lying around (ott), ds was his uusal lovely self and cheered me up, and and and....

Relationship with a friend has totally broken down because of her inability to tell off her child when misbehaving. I got mightily fed up. It is shocking to see.

Did you read the ladygarden thread the other day? It was hilarious. Basically shaved ladygarden versus big hairy muff: what women want and what is their political implication. Never laughed so much. Let me see if I can find soemthing that will cheer me up...

McCloudismynewnameforawhile · 13/05/2009 19:55

lol at adelma e luisa...
i found solace in 2 choco croissants...

TheMysticMasseuse · 13/05/2009 20:09

hey people. i need cheering up mcc can you post link to ladygarden thread?

(aside... when dh and i decided to get married the priest in rome wanted us to do a corso prematrimoniale, so we went on this weekend organised by some catholic organisation... one of the couples giving speeches were called.... Harry... and... Muff. I swear).

did the wraps again tonight. dd said that tonight she liked it wet and sticky (the bende have a thick paste on them) and that i am getting better at it. result no? now let's see if she actually sleeps...
