Ciao, welcome!

(the whole thread, i mean. i don't make any sense do i?)

Sputnik · 12/05/2009 21:55

Yes she seriously missed out. Poor poor woman.

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 21:55

Seriously, you aren't feeling bad for this, are you? And how competitive is it to write a book on ML?

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 21:57

Oh MM, come here and get a friendly pat on the back my dear.

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 21:58

You really sound tired MM. Any chance you can have a few hrs for yourself over the weekend?
(I have a moustache too)

Sputnik · 12/05/2009 22:00

How old is your DD MM?
Did you read that research that came out the other day where they improved childhood excema by adding bleach to baths? Apparently the bacteria on skin irritates the excema further and causes it to worsen. Not suggesting for one moment you try it, but maybe some antibacterial soap? DD has had a bit of excema recently (I did too as a child) and I have been trying this. It seems to be going, but then it may have gone anyway as it-s not a regular thing for her.

Penthesileia · 12/05/2009 22:00

Thanks, everyone.

But I do feel bad, even though I know it's stupid to. One of my old tutors, who I still see quite a bit is always asking what work I'm getting done. He's a man, of course...

MM - poor you. Can you get some rest? Did you see a thread recently about someone who's sucessfully treated their DC's eczema with Aveeno (I think) and dead sea salts in the bath? I will look for the thread....

it's dd2's first birthday on saturday [manages to temporarily snap out of zombie mood to get really excited emoticon]!!!

but i have outsourced the whole thing. we're doing it in a cafe. a nice one, but still i am not going to slave away at home for 2 days like i did for dd1. bad me.

i don't feel like i need time for myself necessarily.. just sleep! sleep!!!!!!!

Sputnik · 12/05/2009 22:03

Re tiredness, I feel like I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel here, and DS is nearly 2 (sorry). We cosleep and just recently I have stopped feeding him at night or in the morning.

TheMysticMasseuse · 12/05/2009 22:03

sorry i sound unhinged tonight

thanks for all your suggestions girls. unfortunately we are at the stage with dd1s eczema where she really needs aggressive treatments as it's a constant cycle of itching/scratching/infection etc. in fact the wraps are awful, but they are relatively natural (only zinc in them, no steroids), so i am soooo hoping it works...

dd1 is 3 yrs and 3 months.

TheMysticMasseuse · 12/05/2009 22:05

dd1 is crying now... :-(

Penthesileia · 12/05/2009 22:06

Here is the thread. It's the same principle as Sputnik mentions, I think, in that the salts kill off the bacteria.

Poor little DD.

Listen, it's my PFB's 1st birthday in under a month, and I've already decided I'm ordering the party food from Waitrose! [lazy mother emoticon]

OP posts:
Sputnik · 12/05/2009 22:09

Poor thing, it must be awful for her. Does she have a teddy or something you can wrap too in solidarity?

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 22:10

Oh poor dd Masseuse I hope the wraps work.

(yes, with time for yourself I meant sleep... but sounds like you have a busy weekend ahead! Ah first birthdays are lovely!)

Penthe, no, don't feel bad, please!

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 22:11

Wrapping up her fav teddy/doll is a good idea!

Penthe, at ordering food from waitrose. I'd love to have pink cupcakes for dd's birthday (next saturday). But me and mil will cook.

Penthesileia · 12/05/2009 22:18

LOL, franca. I feel vaguely guilty, as my own mother was a cake-making genius, and part of me feels I should "make the effort". The rest of me think, "WTF!"

Aacch. I think I'd always find something to feel bad about, workwise. I just keep telling myself I have 46 years before retirement to write lots of books.

It doesn't help that my best friend, also an academic, has written 2 books, edited another 2, and is currently finishing her 3rd. She's had 2 years of leave, though, I suppose, while I've only had a term right before DD was born... And again, sigh...

OP posts:
Penthesileia · 12/05/2009 22:18

46? I wish. 36!!

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 22:23

I'm sure you'll write important tomes in the next 36 yrs and will also bake amazing cakes

Your baby is tiny, there is plenty of time...

Camomilla · 12/05/2009 22:23

I had so many plans for my mat leave, I was going to print and put DS pics in photo albums BEFORE DD was born... never did, poor DS... got cards/memory sticks full of pics, but hardly any on paper... that woman had nanny, cleaner and gardener surely!

MM, little sis got used to the gloves/bandages, I think because it was better for her as it didn't hurt scratching, I mean she could scratch herself without making herself bleed IYKWIM. but when she had it really bad, would need a cortisone injection. sea and light are the only "natural remedies" in her case otherwise, but no cortisone needed for the last few years (she's 24)

Penthesileia · 12/05/2009 22:27

Thanks. I will trade the ability to bake amazing cakes for an extra book or two! Does destiny work that way?

Poor MM's DD. Eczema is horrid.

Camo - we have thousands of photos of DD. I can guarantee that they will never be put onto paper. Actually, that makes me feel guilty and anxious too!

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 22:31

What about the Asprey Baby book penthe? Did you fill it up?

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 22:32

How many books are the average output of an academic? I think dh didn't produce anything in the first yr of ds's life. And he wasn;t the one breastfeeding!

Sputnik · 12/05/2009 22:33

Who needs paper in this day and age anyway? Spare a thought for the trees people

Sputnik · 12/05/2009 22:36

My Dad was an academic, I don-t even know how many books he wrote . 4 or 5 maybe?
Perhaps I should google it!

Penthesileia · 12/05/2009 22:39

Noooooooooooooooo! Don't mention the baby book. I can't handle it.

That's reassuring about your DH, though.

I am clearly very conscientiously thinking about trees in my non-productivity, oh yes,

Sputnik - if you can say, what kind of academic was your dad?
