Welcome, ciao, hello

Good morning everyone. Another early start for us here.... Grrrr... 4.45am!!!

Sorry I disappeared (baby wanted boob ): yes, hot, have read MP. Not my fave though. Agree, Fanny is a bit of a nuisance.

I'm disappointed I missed all the chat last night.

Waltz with Bashir & Changeling are both good; WwB better - very surreal and distressing, but a brave film given the topic; Changeling is quite typical Eastwood: solid historicism, elegant cinematography, straightforward narrative with mildly liberal undertone, well acted. But very upsetting indeed: kidnap and brutal murder of children. Jolie is surprisingly good - you can even manage to ignore how stupidly beautiful she is long enough to enjoy her performance.

Read a bit more of RR last night. Argh, it's good, but so uncomfortable. I feel a bit sordid reading it!

We're doing BLW with DD. We've (well I ) stopped cooking with salt, and just offer her pieces of what we're having (e.g. lasagne last night). It is terribly messy, but you get used to that - quick wipe around with a big cloth.

I couldn't have gone down the whole special puree/pappa/brodo route. I'm too lazy! She's getting on well - tries everything (smelly cheese, pasta, bread, gnocchi, curry, steak, veggies, fruit, you name it). In fact, there's nothing we've offered her (even brussel sprouts at Christmas) that she hasn't had a good try at! She's only just getting the hang of swallowing most of it now though: the difference with BLW is that because they have to learn to chew and move the food to the back of their mouth and swallow, it takes them longer to eat as much as babies on puree (which, being delivered by spoon to the back of the mouth, goes straight down sooner). The idea is that BLW babies are happier dealing with lumps and chunks later (so there isn't a potentially difficult transition phase) and are hopefully more accepting of more foods because they tried them in their own time. Howevever, like all things, it's a baby fashion/orthodoxy, so I'm in no way evangelical or dogmatic about it!

franca - 200 people were trapped in snow in Devon last night, near Exeter - they were housed in a village called Chudleigh - do you know it?

francagoestohollywood · 06/02/2009 09:33

Penthe, yes, I've just received an email from a friend saying the streets are closed/schools etc. I hope she sends me some pics, it must be so beautiful. I'm a bit sad we have missed it. Those beautiful hills covered in snow... and for once we could have actually made use of them, by going sledging (see, that's my utilitarian view of nature )

Dd is home this morning as her school is on strike. She is here with her friend and they've been drawing for an hr now. They draw together and keep saying: "I have an idea" and the other "che idea bellissima!". I'm in awe of how well they get along and how they cooperate and make compromises. It's a pleasure to eavesdrop them !

Penthe, I hope you are napping now after the 4.45 rise!

Where is ROSA?

OP posts:
SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 06/02/2009 09:58

morning all, we had normal start today, 7am, though for some reason DP set the alarm for 6.30 so was awake 1/2hr earlier . Another nightmare getting to school, even with the 3-weeler, pavements are just a mess.

at least I received 2 parcels... Postman complaining the sorting office is swamped by backlog, mainly stupid E-bay stuff ( oops, better not tell him we've starting a clearout through ebay too....)

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 06/02/2009 09:59

yes, Rosa has been very quiet.....

Penthe, what did you start with then? (BLW I mean )

francagoestohollywood · 06/02/2009 10:06

Hello sunflower! Snow is a nightmare with buggies. Have you got a sling or something?

OP posts:
SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 06/02/2009 10:13

I'm always "slinging it", but as it's so slippery if DS falls it's easier to lift him back up if I don't have DD wrapped around me...

francagoestohollywood · 06/02/2009 10:15

Of course, yes, much safer having her in a buggy when it is so slippery!
It's raining here. So miserable.

OP posts:
SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 06/02/2009 10:21

here too, it stopped raining, so the snow is melting fast, and it's all a mix of dirty snow/soft ice/hard ice/mulch/black water....... yuk, pretty depressing and have to go back out to the post office (hoping they're open as they weren't earlier), and then back out to get DS as DP can't make it.... oh, I'm such a miserable cow today..

francagoestohollywood · 06/02/2009 10:33

I can't blame you, leaving the house to get into the rain and cold can be a huge pain in the neck!

OP posts:
SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 06/02/2009 11:12

sorry, had to go clean massive explosion, then burnt my toast, so I decided on a thick layer of nutella over it, now dd's feeding, and exploding again ... sorry, talking about poo again...

francagoestohollywood · 06/02/2009 12:08

Have just eaten a piece of garlic thinking it was a piece of chicken . Actually it was good.

OP posts:
Brangelina · 06/02/2009 12:37

Cooked or raw? Just had a bowl of leftover barley risotto. god I love barley, so satisfyingly stodgy and springy under tooth.

I have to go out and it is peeing down. Yesterday I got soaked despite a hood and umbrella. I'm getting really fed up with this constant rain and the gloomy grey light, I want sun!

Rosa · 06/02/2009 12:45

Here I am ... Sorry yesterday pm was just too knackered. Went for hearing test after minriosa waking 3 times for food night before. She pooed as soon as they put the things on her head and I fed a smelly baby whilst they did teh tests. They then had me wait 20 mins for results from the doctor ( I was alomost crapp*ng myself at that point however all seems ok and we have to go back in 3 mths for a check .We then went to a centro commerciale and I had a potter and bought a t shirt for me ( tried trousres on got depressed ). Bought a few things for the dds then did a bit of a supermarket shop and at the cassa in the adjacent one a bottle of aceto ( red) broke and smashed and went over minirosas pram , some on her and the copertina - thank heavens I had pulled the hood up as she had fallen asleep in the supermarket or she would have been soaked and lord only knows if any glass would have gone in. The cassiera came and asked if anybody had cut themselves - that was it but then I flipped - Ok it was an accident but I had a aceto covered pram and baby SO we did a mini denucia where they report the facts - the security guy was a bit when I asked what they were going todo - Ok so its not my fault but I pay for the cleaning bill I think I said .Minirosa was screaming at this pont as I had bathed her in wet wipes so I stomped to the car and fed her. Apart from that we had a nice day.
Gotta go as we have a party this pm ( in the depths of Vce somewhere) and need to feed minirosa get her changed and her bag packed - she will poo for sure. HAve Dh cousin coming to help me she is 15 and I said I would pay her I thought about Eu8 an hour ????

beforesunrise · 06/02/2009 13:08

well hello everyone! today is my day off, thank god :-)

ROsa, isn't it typical about the poos? As a friend of mine puts it, not very politely but effectively, "ai bebe' piace ca*are sul pulito"

8 euros per hour for a 15 year old sounds like a lot of money to me tbh! but if she's good it's money well spent

Weaning- what a nightmare eh? dd1 was a dream, i did the normal pureeing thing, she ate everything, moved on to lumps and proper food wthout a problem etc. dd2 has a spoon phobia, so we are doing finger foods only (i suppose if i was fashionable i would call it BLW), and yes she does try everything i put in front of her but i doubt she actually nourishes herself at all! I find the BLW dogmatism going on on MNET a bit tiresome tbh, i mean you do what you want/works for you BUT it's so easy to forget that the end result is all the same, i mean they will all (hopefully!) end up eating normal foods with fork and knife....

moved on from RR to something a bit easier and lighther, now reading "Sea of Poppies" by Amitav Gosh. Loving it (am a complete indian fiction addict) though i can see it'll be frustrating as it's meant to be the first in a trilogy and the successive instalments are yet to be written!

francagoestohollywood · 06/02/2009 13:20

Rosa, glad to hear the test went well, despite the vinegar accident .
I think 8 euros is very generous, but it probably depends on how often she comes, I suppose. Not sure what is the current rate of a babysitter here in Italy.

BS: I only have 50 pages to go and I sorry I'm reaching the end. I haven't picked up yet what I'll read next, despite having a big pile of books on my comodino.

The piece of garlic was cooked, as I had leftovers of chicken tights I made yesterday night. I think I should drink a cup of coffee now.

Brangelina · 06/02/2009 13:35

Ah, so that's where you were! I thought you'd gone somewhere nice for a long weekend. Glad it went well. Early pooing is a nightmare, DD used to literally explode as I was pulling the key out of the door. I've never understood those who do EC, how on earth do they do it with constantly exploding babies? Do they stay in for 6 months or something?

at the vinegar incident, didn't the shop even offer you discount vouchers to cover the cost of cleaning? Crappy customer service! I'd say 8 euros is a bit high for a 15yo, maybe start lower and up it if she turns out to be really good. How many hours would you be needing her?Babysitter rates atm are around 9/10 euros ph, although someone I know has a student coming to her for 8, but then she does around 25hrs a week.

I've got loads to do and no desire to do anything. I think I must be suffering from SAD or something.

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 13:37

I'm having a cup of tea and a bit of green and black 75%. the dds are watching pippi and later we'll bake a cake for dh...ahhh aren't we 'la famiglia del mulino bianco' not!

booked hairdresser for tomorrow for colour and cut (a slap to the recession) because I look a witch. I bet I'll be disappointed. Everytime I go to hairdresser I feel I am playing at being a grown-up like when I was little and would go with my mum.

Brangelina · 06/02/2009 13:41

I really need a haircut and colour too. I'm just waiting for it to stop raining, as otherwise I'll go in as a frizzy mess and come out a frizzy mess (albeit with the grey bits covered up).

I'm chomping on some cioccolato di Modica. the cannella on'e s bit sweet though, better the vanilla.

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 13:42

what's EC now?????

rosa yes well done for telling them and the minimum was to get money for cleaning. customer service is poor in italy at times, isn't it? glad all's well with minirosa too.

Oh I must find the time to finish RR, you are all soooo fast my god!

what's up brange? mind you all that rain would depress anybody. at least snow is pretty and risveglia il bambino che e' in te'. (my english is vanishing...)

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 06/02/2009 13:42

love barley too (DS used too as well til last night when he said he wasn't eating teeth!!), we had barley and lentil soup last night (and tonight I'll finish it off while DS and DP clean the left over chinese - great when you have dinner sorted the day before )

Rosa, sorry about the aceto, at least it wasn't balsamico, as that would have been a nightmare to clean!!

went to PO, but thankfully poor DP said he'll go pick DS up...

BS - I just read weaning threads, don't dare posting and getting scottata! I did normal weaning with DS, and fancy trying BLW this time, but like everything else, if it works, fine, otherwise we'll try s.thing else!

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 13:43

BS how's going back to work then? happy?

I'm enjoying the last half an hr of quiet, as the dc are at friend's.
I will then have to brave the weather (luckily it is not raining at the moment) and take ds to a party by tram. Lovely mother of the festeggiato told me I can take dd along if she wants to. We'll see what she wants to do.
