New thread open for reports on local wildlife, the weather, gardening and domestic chores. Plus the never ending hunt for HBFs who stubbornly fail to materialise.

Evening wenches.

Fortunately warm but not hot for us today, although very stuffy in the office. Nearly nodded off at one point.

I remember feeling so honoured if LetUsCat allowed me to have a cuddle. He wasn’t overly keen. Bit like DS2 come to think of it 😁

It’s soul destroying isn’t it Apricot? Fingers crossed that there is a positive outcome.

Still having buttonless knitted/crochet things. I’ve started making a giraffe though.

LetUsPrey · 12/08/2026 07:02

Morning wenches.

Sunny again. The washing’s about to go out. We’re on the dressing gowns and coats stage of laundry.

Finally got round to booking in for a bra fitting at a local, independent bra shop. Quite looking forward to it, although it’s straight after work so bit concerned I’ll be a bit sweaty.

Right, washing.

Have lovely days wenches.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 12/08/2026 07:46

Evening all. Kittens have had a lovely morning of running in and out of the house to their hearts content. They're going to be very grumpy tomorrow when they're shut in because we're all out. Unless they figure out how to use the catflap!

Hope everyone's had a decent day, aside from Virgin Media fuckwits and work[- Hmm
Oh good lord - that thing about me forgetting to hit post? FML.

Sunny outside and forecast to be hot. There's a sniff of drizzle on Satuday and next monday. We'll see...

Last night's WTFness was the cockerel starting to crown at 11pm!

ApricotCrush · 12/08/2026 16:40

Afternoon. Very hot, it’s 32 degrees here, lots of washing done. We been sitting in the shade with sudokus and ice creams.

I’ve never had a bra fitting, I don’t think there’s anywhere round here that does them now everywhere’s closed down.

Oh dear Helen, can you tell the cockerel he’s got his timing wrong? Hope it isn’t a regular thing.

Have a good evening all.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 12/08/2026 18:57

Evening all. It's sunny outside but getting darker. I have tried the colander thing to view the eclipse, but just had bright round dots so far Hmm Also have to go out in 5 mins. Ho hum.

Hope everyone's had a good day.
<hits 'post', very deliberately>

FancyFancy · 12/08/2026 19:46

Evening.

Yeah, we were forecast some rain come next Sunday/Monday, as the days get closer the duration gets shorter and shorter. I am not holding out much hope.

Did get a good view of the eclipse from the railway bridge and the DC reaped one benefit of living in flats - DD could see it from her balcony and DS from the roof terrace of his block. Glad I got glasses for us all 😊. The light definitely dimmed for about 20 or so minutes, it was a bit weird but hard to describe - like a late summer evening level of light but the shadows and the colour of the light were not quite right iyswim? It was definitely a bit quieter, but possibly because lots of people were watching it rather than travelling places? Not much bird noise, but then it's not peak time of day for that here.

LetUsPrey · 12/08/2026 21:52

Evening wenches.

Tried the pinhole thing but I didn’t see much effect (probably user error). It was a bit sort of spooky as I was driving to book club when it started getting a bit darker. Loads of people out in the village when I got there. Started a new book Guilty By Definition by Susie Dent. Enjoying it so far, quite a few oooooo moments.

Work was the usual. Bra fitting went quite well although she’s having to order in other sizes to try. The difference in temperature from when I went in at 2.30 to leaving about an hour later was fairly “flipping heck!”

Am completely sick of all the tiny flies, fruit flies are they? Little fuckers. Yes, I know they serve a purpose in the scheme of things but actually just feck off.

LetUsPrey · 13/08/2026 07:02

Morning wenches.

Already very warm, and I think we’re relatively not that warm compared to large parts of the country.

Mad dreams again so not exactly rested.

Have super days wenches.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 13/08/2026 07:56

Morning all. Also hot here already - I think this is peak 'hot' day (niagw - though if I was to chance across some HBFs it would be a nice addition to my day).

Kittens are playing outside - Slinky has caught a mouse - all her own work. Though she doesn't know what to do with it other that hurl it about the patio in delight. Spot has also caught something. Her immense skills have netted her.... a feather Hmm Grin She very pleased with it though.

Have a good day all! <wafts air blade about>

ApricotCrush · 13/08/2026 16:48

Afternoon. Very hot. I had a terrible night and ended up downstairs on the sofa as it was boiling in the bedroom even with a fan.

I also failed with the colander and pinhole thing. Then in the middle of it Misty missed the litter tray with a wee and while we were clearing it up I noticed spots of blood on the carpet. Obviously I thought it was from her but after examining her all over and under where she was sitting it turned out DH had cut his toe and not noticed. Grin

Anyway I went outside and sat in the sun and watched it on the iPad in the absence of proper glasses. Well done to Fancy for being prepared. It did go quite dark and eerie. Not so much as 1999 obviously but quite similar.

Hope everyone’s managed to stay coolish.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 13/08/2026 20:42

Evening all. Hot, tired, whinge, etc. DS has got a place on the course he wanted, so all is good with his world His GF also got the place she wanted. Today has mostly been spent taxi-ing them about the place. He also wants to go out tonight after work, I'm really hoping that he's too tired after work and decides not to, though he says he'll get a taxi home.

Eek at the blood Apricot - and also [eye roll] at MrA. not realising he'd cut himself. DH has been off at the walk-in centre to get a tetanus jab - he did the cliched 'stood on rusty nail' whilst wearing crocs, and cut his foot.

In book news, I'm reading 'Normal Women' which is the most rage-inducing book I've ever read - worse that 'Invisible Women'. It's basically an analysis of systematic oppression of women since the Normal Conquest. Passing legislation to make sure women are paid less, and then saying you can't employ them because they will undercut men. Or that you can only work in some jobs with a degree, but women aren't allowed to go to University. I mean, I knew mst of this theoretically, but to read it all in one place. Raaaaaaaaghhhhhh! Shash the patriarchy, etc.

DH has the athletics on, kittens have come in and flaked out. Slinky has been out on the road. Bad Slinky. IdiotKitty saw them out and went all 'bottle brush' tail, because apparently seeing them outside is terrifying and they can't possibly be the same kittens as he sees indoors? Hmm

LetUsPrey · 13/08/2026 21:09

Evening wenches.

It had better be cooler tonight. My ankle and calf were doing the crampy thing in the night which I’m putting down to the heat (and possibly me not drinking enough). Work was very very stuffy.

Well done MiniHelen! And his GF too. You can now go and wander round an ikea with all the other parents with teens off to university, assuming he’s living out 😁 IdiotKitty living up to the name

Oh MrApricot for goodness sake. Hope the cut was only a small one and what a relief that Misty was uninjured.

I think I’ve got that book Helen. Is it by Philippa Gregory? I might make it my next non-fiction read. I’m dipping in and out of Ladies Can’t Climb Ladders.

LetUsPrey · 14/08/2026 07:07

Morning wenches.

Might have been cooler last night according to the weather apps but I couldn’t tell. The broken sleep and more stressy dreams won’t have helped. Hope weather breaks soon for everywench.

Am in a grump so I shall sit over there grumpily in a sulk <grumps>

Have great days wenches.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 14/08/2026 08:36

Morning all. DS did not get a taxi home - a friend was getting picked up, so he hitched a ride part of the way home with them. I have had 4 hours sleep. I'm not convinced I'm going to be much use today. Hmm DS, to give him credit, has got up and is ready to go out for the last day of SummerSportsCamp He is full of youth and resilience and alcohol that's still in his system

Hot and sunny this morning. The MN trending thread is about the heatwave is ending today. Weather reports agree (for now) but it feels a bit premature at the moment. In good news, I think I've stalked one of the hens to where she's been laying, so I'm hoping to find a stash of eggs there later today.

Yes LetUs - that's the book. Good luck keeping your blood pressure down as you read it! Grin
Have a good day all - TFI etc. <crawls off to office>
<decorates with hot weather pics>

Afternoon. Sunny and cloudy, a bit less warm. We were promised light showers this afternoon, but of course they didn’t materialise. I spent half the night on the sofa again and didn’t get a lot of sleep.

Well done to MiniHelen and his GF on their courses. Hope you found the eggs.

Have a good evening all.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 14/08/2026 21:23

Evening all. I did not find eggs, the chicken lied. But I know where to look tomorrow as well. (Tomorrow, and tomorrow and tomorrow, etc!)

It has been revoltingly hot - worse than yesterday. Work was quite productive, I finally had a chance to crack on with a tedious spreadsheet comparison job and broke the back of it - hurrah! Though I did struggle to stay awake at times today - I went out for a breath of fresh air and came in sleepier than I started Confused.

Hope everywench had a good day and no-one melted in the heat.

LetUsPrey · 14/08/2026 21:43

Evening wenches.

I thought the temperature had finally started to drop but for some reason it seems to have gone quite warm again 😁

Cheeky chicken hiding her eggs. Ah the energy of youth and being able to function the day after a few drinks and not much sleep.

Hopefully you’ll get a full night in bed Apricot.

I’ve got the athletics on. Bit nervous for Keely 😬

LetUsPrey · Yesterday 07:36

Morning wenches.

Temperature’s definitely dropped here.

Usual round of Saturday housework jobs to do but a visit from DS1 to look forward to.

Have super days wenches.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · Yesterday 08:32

Morning all. The sky is solid grey! There's been the tiniest amount of light rain overnight!

IdiotKitty had a rabbit dilemma last night, in that he caught one, but the kittens were loose inside and he didn't want to bring it in. Goodness knows what he's done - whether he ate it all, or has an outdoor larder somewhere now, but he's not hungry this morning Grin

Some taxi plans, and helping set up another village event today.

Have a good day all.

OP posts:
ApricotCrush · Yesterday 17:55

Afternoon. Cloudy this morning but the sun came out this afternoon. The app says it’s 21 degrees but it’s still hot in the house. I suppose it takes a while for it to cool down. At least I managed to stay in bed last night.

Usual stuff going on here too. Hope everyone’s had a good day.

LetUsPrey · Yesterday 20:57

Evening wenches.

There was a suspicion of the lightest of drizzle today but nothing came of it.

Perhaps IdiotKitty’s stashed the rabbit up a tree, like one or some of the big cats do 😁

I spent an hour or so cuddling a teeny tiny baby this afternoon. It was very much the equivalent of “can’t do anything, there’s a cat on my knee” 😁

I have finally got round to finishing off some knitting/crochet projects. One thing sewn up, two things have buttons sewn on. Four more things need buttons but I’ve stopped for tonight.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · Yesterday 21:34

Evening all. Awww at the teeny tiny baby.

I'm not sure if anything was stashed up a tree, but tree-climbing has been today's chaos from the kittens Confused Slinky managed to get herself down, and Spot got lifted off - not sure if she'd have made it down herself, but we didn't have time to find out - not wanting to go out and leave her stranded up a tree!

It's been cooler here than it was, but the sun came out this afternoon to heat everything up again.

This evening I've been creosoting again, and have been nibbled by mosquitos - sodding things. Angry

OP posts:
FancyFancy · Yesterday 22:42

Evening, it's been cooler here. Marginally. With the stench of shit from the muck spreading and it being a bit muggier it wasn't that nice outside. Still no rain at all and the forecast seems to change multiple times a day on whether we'll get any on Tuesday. It always seems to be promised on a Tuesday!

Well done mini Helen, lovely news and great that his GF got her grades too 😊

Hope you managed some better nights sleep apricot, roll on the cooler weather!

You stopped the work in time for the good athletics tonight letus, fabulous relays 🥂

LetUsPrey · Today 08:44

Morning wenches.

I wasn’t brave enough to watch the first relay Fancy, but watched the second one. 4 x 100m relays are usually a bit too tense for me!

Stupid mosquitoes having a nibble Helen.

Usual Sunday here I hope.

Have lovely days wenches.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · Today 09:33

Morning all. Mostly cloudy here with a bit of blue sky. No exciting plans, but lots of things we could do if we organised ourselves!
