New thread open for reports on local wildlife, the weather, gardening and domestic chores. Plus the never ending hunt for HBFs who stubbornly fail to materialise.

Afternoon. <wilts> I couldn’t sleep last night, it’s like an oven in our bedroom, so I went downstairs at 12.30 and settled down on the sofa. I managed to get some sleep in between a cat walking all over me wondering what on earth I was doing. I think I’ll do the same tonight.

This reminds me of the summer of 1976 when I was heavily pregnant with DD and spent many nights on a sun lounger in the garden. The heat and drought went on for weeks, then after I had her it broke up and we went straight into winter. Extreme weather isn’t anything new in spite of all the panic.

DH is watching videos of severely overgrown garden makeovers. If he can’t be doing anything he has to watch other people doing it. His hand is much better already; he can hold his phone in it without it going dead. The hand, not the phone. His friends don’t go past here sadly so couldn’t pick him up.

Hope the car is fixed LetUs.

Yay for successful date Helen.

LetUsPrey · 25/06/2026 19:33

Evening wenches.

Car is fixed (everything crossed).

Physio was excellent as usual.

Super stuffy here too last night. I read that it’s the humidity causing increased problems I think? Usually you sweat and that dries and cools you a bit, but with the humidity the sweat can’t dry so no cooling. Or something. And it makes my hair go even more shite. They didn’t mention that last bit in the article.

I fell asleep on the settee earlier but it’s okay because DH came and woke me up to ask something that could absolutely have waited 🤨

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 25/06/2026 21:10

Evening all. We actually had high cloud for most of the day and the temperature wasn't unbearable. It shouldn't get obscenely hot here tomorrow either. Though it may feel it. We'll see... I have my USB-powered fan out and ready to use!

DS has been out with GF again (apparently they are 'official') and then brought her back for the afternoon and evening. I'm running her to the bus in 10 minutes.

Shock at that article LetUs - there should def. be something about how the weather affects hair included in their information. I mean - priorities! Grin
Also Grin at MrA watching people doing diy/garden stuff to make up for not being able to do it himself!

Hope that Fancy is getting on ok with working away...

Morning wenches.

That’s sweet re MiniHelen.

We had rain overnight. Not freshened anything, just made everything more sauna like.

That absolutely should have been included in the article Helen, although it’s handy excuse to just say “it’s the humidity 🤷🏻‍♀️ “ 😁

Today’s plan will be not melting.

Have super days wenches.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 26/06/2026 08:59

Morning. It's hot already outside Sad. Hair should 100% be included. "It's hot outside with high UV and humidity, so remember your sunscreen and the hair-frizz warnings are at Amber.

I woke at 4L30 but managed to get back to sleep, so DH woke me at just before 8am because I have work at 9am. Obviously he can't get up and feed everythign while I sleep a bit longer Hmm
I tried closing curtains to keep the heat out downstairs. Kittens were straight up them. <sigh>

Have a good day all!

Afternoon
We got recalled to the office earlier in the week - lovely aircon but not being there in person is less efficient, so swings & roundabouts.

The last two nights the house has barely cooled down overnight at all, so it was 26 degrees downstairs this morning <wilts> Have been diligent with shutting everything all day until it's cooler outside than in which definitely helps, but does make the house stuffy.

Chonk & Floof seem to actually like the heat - when DD went home last night, Floof demanded cuddles & plonked himself on me, because presumably he wasn't quite warn enough Hmm

Glad to hear MrA is recovering well and that the car battery is now fixed letus, not so good to hear about the curtains helen!

ApricotCrush · 26/06/2026 17:31

Afternoon. I stayed in the lounge again last night, but didn’t sleep well at all. We had a thunder storm about 3 o’clock and some rain, but it didn’t improve things.

Interesting about the humidity LetUs, that makes sense.

I think Misty likes it too Fancy, she spends all day in the shoe cupboard in the perspex covered area between the garage and the house, which is the hottest place. Absolutely bonkers.

Naughty kittens climbing the curtains.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 26/06/2026 17:48

FML that was a hot one. I've never seen a cat pant before! (I called IdiotKitty after hearing cat fight noises outside, and he flomped on the patio actually panting in the heat. Then he wolfed down some wet food with added water and found the coolest spot in the house to stretch out in.)
I have been working in the 'cold' north facing room with a flannel on my neck and a USB fan whirring away. It was 29 in there. Wish I'd gone into the office, but then I'd have to drive there and back in the heat as well. urgh. Hoping it will start cooling down soon!

WickedWenchOfTheNorth · 26/06/2026 20:35

Cats are so weird Hmm

It's hot here as well but not as much as you have I think, but on Sunday we're supposed to get 30 degrees Shock

I've had one week off work and two more to go. I always have this problem that I think I should be productive and not just sit and read a book or something, so annoying.

My hair always gets a life of its own when it's humid Hmm

I slept on the couch for a while during a summer when it was very hot Apes, I have AC in the living room so it was nice and cool. Glad MrApes hand is doing better.

MiniHelen is very clever, who could say no to kittens? Grin

LetUsPrey · 26/06/2026 21:11

Evening wenches.

I have been sweating in places that quite frankly have no business sweating. We had a couple of rumbles of thunder this afternoon but no more rain. It’s now feeling much cooler thankfully.

Poor IdiotKitty being too warm. Is also baffled at TavCats wanting to be even warmer.

At least at this time of year I can blame the state of my hair on the humidity 😁

But reading is productive Wicked. Self care and stuff.

LetUsPrey · 27/06/2026 06:02

Morning wenches.

Another sunny start to the day. Meeting BestFriend this morning. Also need to buy an engagement card for DS1 and his girlfriend! Or I suppose that should be fiancée 😁

Family barbecue this afternoon at which point it is of course forecast to rain.

Have lovely days wenches.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 27/06/2026 11:14

Squeee! Congratulations to MiniLetUs <buys sun hat>

Last night was grim - far too hot, and couldn't sleep with windows open due to fecking mosquitos. I was wandering round the house like an overheated ghost at 2am feeling very sorry for myself. Fortunately we had some rain at 5am and that cooled things down (and sent the mozzies for cover).

It's hot again now (thought not quite has hot as yesterday according to the forecast) and I have to go to the supermarket. Ho hum.

Sitting and reading is very much what you should do on holiday Wicked - crack on!

<sends airblades and shade to all wenches>

Afternoon. Same as you Helen, I tried to sleep in the bedroom but gave up and went downstairs again and still couldn’t sleep. It’s not so hot today and I’ve got a nice breeze blowing into the bedroom, hoping to cool it down a bit for tonight.

I’m the same WW, always think I should be doing something productive, but I have to tell myself that it doesn’t matter. You are on holiday after all.

Oooooooo, many congratulations to LetUsDS1 and his fiancée. Hope it isn’t raining for the barbecue.

Also hope it’s cooling down for everyone.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 27/06/2026 22:49

Toooooooooooo hot. Though cooler than yesterday. We've had light rain on and off this evening.

LetUsPrey · 28/06/2026 07:20

Morning wenches.

Was a bit of a late one last night and I was a bit “tired”, but only a bit, when we got home.

Temperature was much more manageable yesterday. The wind really picked up in the afternoon. It stayed nice for the most part for the barbecue with the odd bit of rain but it passed quickly.

Thanks for the congratulations 😊. We’re going seeing them today which was planned before the news so that worked out rather well!

Flapjacks are made and the ironing’s done.

Have great days wenches.

ApricotCrush · 28/06/2026 16:43

Afternoon. I had a much better night and it’s cooler today, although looking at the weather app it’s going hot again next week.

The broadband has been down since yesterday afternoon so I can’t get on the computer and a lot of the television isn’t working. DH isn’t happy, he can’t watch his YouTube garden makeovers. Sad I’m on the iPad through my phone. Virgin Media say it’ll be back tomorrow at 16.06!!! Angry Where they get the precise time from I’ve no idea.

Hope everyone’s had a good day.

FancyFancy · 28/06/2026 17:35

Aw congratulations to MiniLetus & fiancee - lovely news Smile

Lounging around just reading should be compulsory on holidays ww

has it cooled your way yet helen? Here it's still warm, but with some clouds, so the sun isn't as relentless and there's a breeze, tonight is supposed to be much cooler - very much looking forward to that.

Broadband down apricot? Interesting, DD's is out too - she's not with Virgin though, maybe they use of of their infrastructure though, fingers crossed you get yours back soon

LetUsPrey · 28/06/2026 20:02

Evening wenches.

Thanks Fancy 😊. Went to see them today. They’re both still very giddy about it understandably.

That’s frustrating about the broadband Apricot. 🤞🏻for it being fixed sooner than the estimate.

We’ve had sunshine all day but the wind is really strong so it’s definitely not sitting outside weather.

I’m being stern with myself and trying to finish my two current projects before I start on my next one. The yarn I’d been waiting for for ages finally came back into stock so I’ve got that now. It’s so pretty! Want to make sure I take my time with what I’m making though.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 28/06/2026 22:26

Evening all. Hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot <melts> though it has started to cool down this evening, thank goodness, and there was a bit of a breeze today too which made everything feel a lot more pleasant. This weekend has been spent mostly helping with an Open Gardens event (not ours!)

Nightmare about the lack of internet Apricot, and not just because it makes MrA grumpy! Maybe the internet can't cope with the heat either!

Morning wenches.

Back to work. Urgh. The don’t want to is at spectacular levels. Perhaps if I just sit quietly in a corner, no one will notice I’m still here. Unfortunately they’d notice that I’m not there at work. Le sigh.

Hope it’s cooled down for you now as well Helen.

Have lovely days wenches.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 29/06/2026 10:55

Morning all. It's hot and sunny outside, though it did get much cooler last night and it's only 26 in my office, which is bearable. I spent about 2 hours livestock and garden wrangling this morning - DH said he'd 'watered the patio' yesterday and I'm wondering if he meant that literally, since all the pots were very light, so I lugged water, and dead-headed pots and roses, etc etc. Really ought to crack on with work now. <sigh> Why isn't 'Professional Snoozer' an actual job?

In Shock news, DS wants GF to stay over Confused

OP posts:
ApricotCrush · 29/06/2026 17:45

Afternoon. Still warm but cloudy and much fresher.

I went to do a Lidl shop this morning and they’ve changed the whole store round. Angry I spent twice as long as usual looking for stuff and still forgot some things. Why do they do it? And on top of that, all their eggs are white. Now I know they taste the same and it’s supposed to save the planet Hmm but I don’t like them, they look anaemic, and what will happen to all the hens that lay brown eggs? Can you change their diet or something to make the eggs white? <knows nothing about hens>

Broadband came back last night then went again this morning. DH managed to speak to a real person who said they were updating something. They could have warned us.

Ah, difficult Helen. DS snuck one or two girlfriends in and then out again before we were up. Shock His girlfriend/then wife/now ex-wife stayed over a few times officially but he was quite a bit older then.

Hope everyone’s had a good day.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 29/06/2026 20:48

Evening all. It's cooled down outside but the house is still quite muggy. <side eyes at kittens requiring closed windows>

Supermarket layout changes are one of the most annoying things ever. Ours once moved things around and split the cereals over two different locations - it was so weird.

Egg colour depends on the breed. White eggs used to be standard, and then someone (a supermarket) decided that brown eggs are healthier, being brown. So all the production had to swap over. White eggs are just as good for you, and the 'save the planet' reasons are a load of old cobblers (last time I read their reasoning). It's a marketing gimmick as far as I can tell, but all the farmers who had contracts with the relevant supermarkets will now be swapping to different breeds as fast as they can. The commercial farmers tend to get rid of their hens at about 18 months (or two years? It's not long anyway) because they become less reliable layers. That's why you have hen rescue places constantly rehoming 'rescued' hens. (I think that's a broadly accurate summary, but I Am Not A Farmer. Grin )

Morning wenches.

Work was even more of a shitshow yesterday than I’d expected so fun times.

Totally forgot to post last night 🤦🏻‍♀️

Changing supermarket layouts can do one. I don’t know anyone who thinks “wow this is great, I love to spend more time out of my day looking for my shopping”.

That’s very interesting about hens and eggs Helen. Eeek at MiniHelen wanting a house guest.

Even though I harrumphed at myself yesterday for going into work very early, I shall no doubt do the same today.

Have great days wenches.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 30/06/2026 08:22

Morning all. Cooler and cloudy today - I even thought about chucking a top on over my PJs! Today I'm NOT going to forget about EarlyMorningExerciseClass.

Other than that, work, taxi-ing, gardening etc... might do some baking. Could also do with a food shop, but that might have to wait util tomorrow when I can go to the BigSupermarket (and hope the layout hasn't been changed!

Have a good day all. <side-eyes and cbf at LetUsWork>
