What would your worst job be?

I don't mean practically impossible things like flying an aroplane, but things that ordinary people do with enjoyment.
Mine would be taking in ironing, and dog walking.
What would yours be?

Quite a few things now that I am retired but especially:

Driving a large, fast, vehicle - especially in the dark.

Chef in a busy, hot restaurant kitchen.

Anything involving being out in the rain for long periods, e.g. farmer.

Anything involving delivering bad news, e.g. oncologist.

Anything involving large dogs - dog walker, dog groomer. Don't have the strength and I'm a bit frightened to be honest.

Howards · 18/12/2025 17:57

Sales, or any job where you have to take clients out and entertain them. Shudder.

VerityUnreasonble · 18/12/2025 18:58

Hmm I think there are lots of jobs I wouldn't be very good at but wouldn't really hate (sales for example, which I've done, I wasn't great at selling things but I quite liked chatting to people about their needs).

Quite a few of the jobs mentioned on this thread are things I have actually done in one way or another though!

I wouldn't want to wash windows on very tall buildings. I think that would be a combination of both dull and terrifying.

Furniture store so quiet the days must drag.
Anything outdoors.
I couldn’t cope with anything body related!

Wow those picking teaching as their worst job - hope you’re therefore grateful for those teaching your kids

thank god for the teachers who do it for the love of the job, about all they got

I mentioned I could never be a SEN teacher, and that I think the people who are able to do it are seriously amazing. I’d double teachers’ salaries if I could; it’s SUCH a hard AND important job, which is why so many people are mentioning it, between long hours, trying to turn no funding into a full and interesting classroom, plus it follows you home at night and adds to the mental load. People who can do it and do it well are obviously worthy of all our thanks.

Deep sea fisherman. Have a fish phobia and get dreadfully seasick on the calmest waters.

Podiatrist, chiropodist, reflexologist or sales assistant in a shoe shop - basically anything involving feet

This. Also any job that involves cleaning up vomit/poo/urine. Social worker - I am not sure I could deal with some of the heartbreaking cases they deal with daily and be able to sleep at night. Honestly, I am not sure I could be many customer service/client facing jobs. So many people are rude at best and sadly aggressive, I am not one of those people who can let that behaviour wash over me.

TheMoth · 18/12/2025 20:23

Care worker. I have a horror of old age and incapacity. One of my fears is being managed out (of teaching!) When I'm older and expensive and having no other job to go to than caring.

Factory work too. Did it through uni and thought i was actually going to die of boredom.

Teenagers are a doddle.

IAmNotSureAboutYouNow · 18/12/2025 20:25

Obviously there’s worse jobs, but I would hate to be a social media influencer.
I would hate to put my life, especially DC, online and always be under pressure to be interesting and stay relevant. No thanks.

I bet it’s really consuming and stressful constantly thinking about content.

Anything involving data entry ..sat in front of a screen all day.

Anything involving significant fine motor skills and detail as I'm impatient.

DelphiniumBlue · 18/12/2025 20:44

Laiste · 18/12/2025 14:11

can't deal with:
Bodily fluids from people or animals.

Feet.

Teeth.

Dealing with bad mental illness. (sorry about this one)

Being out in the cold and rain.

All of that.
Feet, teeth, bodily fluids... and I hate getting wet or cold.
I also don't like dealing with raw meat.
On the other hand, I teach in a primary school and mostly like the kids. This week has been a bit hard though, they are all very bouncy and loud!

Jamesblonde2 · 18/12/2025 20:45

Chef

Notellinganyone · 18/12/2025 22:47

@crazystar - I do get 56K a year and 17 weeks holiday a year- I’m no martyr.

Nope! Much easier ways to earn £57k, I will trade the holidays for an easier work life! But don’t mistake that for disrespect to teachers, thank goodness for them.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/12/2025 23:28

Anything public facing.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 18/12/2025 23:30

Five pages in and no one has mentioned Derek and Clive? I must be getting old…

illsendansostotheworld · 18/12/2025 23:57

A GDPR officer - had our annual audit recently so fucking dull

Oooobigstretch · 19/12/2025 00:03

Nursery worker. Primary school teacher. Sales.

I think I would be ok being a forensic pathologist or working outside in the cold and rain.

I’ve just realised I am not a people person.

Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits · 19/12/2025 00:10

Teacher. I left for a reason and would rather take in ironing (despite only ever ironing maybe 1 item every 3 years).

Anything with bad smells - I have a really sensitive gag reflex. Reading this thread, that seems to wipe out more jobs than I'd thought!

Married to one, an exceptional high school teacher too - he’s earning less than that though having been doing it over 10 years

he went contracting and has then found it harder to get back to his grade he left at , very experienced but doesn’t want to be more senior - he’s on 50k

crazystar · 19/12/2025 11:42

It’s funny i wanted to be a journalist - now in my role deal with many and think it’s an awful career , especially daily mail / sun kind
