What would your worst job be?

I don't mean practically impossible things like flying an aroplane, but things that ordinary people do with enjoyment.
Mine would be taking in ironing, and dog walking.
What would yours be?

Nurse, elderly care, butcher, dustman, podiatrist.

Minnowsmouse · 18/12/2025 15:49

Anything to do with child abuse units, i.e. police, social services.

I also thought teacher but even more so those council folk who come and clean up decomposition detritus from houses. There was a fly on the wall documentary about it and I kept thinking I'm so grateful there are people willing and able to do that.

The posters who have expressed feet horror made me laugh because my mum is a podiatrist and I would often go to work with her in the school hols and sit in the corner of her clinic quietly reading (wouldn't be allowed now). I've seen all sorts of feet and foot problems and feet are completely matter of fact to me. Im baffled by people who find them either disgusting or erotic. I wasn't inspired to follow in her footsteps though (pun intended).

Teacher. My job is very high stress high stakes and I still wouldn't touch being a teacher for all the money in the world.

Friendlygingercat · 18/12/2025 16:07

While I was a mature student I did some jobs which most people would consider unpleasant.

I worked as a telephone debt collector. Of course some customers were pretty abusive but it taughte me a lot about how the debt industry operates which is very useful knowledge.

I had a job on a chat line (aka sex line) which could at times be quite amusing. I did all the dominatrix calls. I know how to terrify and manipulate someone on the phone who is trying to scam me.

The jobs I would hate to do would be caring for someone who is ill or working with chidren. If I was a teacher/nanny/childminder some of the little shits would get a right walloping.

Nothungrycat · 18/12/2025 16:14

Care worker. Not only the personal care, but also being able to chat nicely to people.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/12/2025 16:15

Anything involving driving a large vehicle - bus driver, lorry driver, delivery driver etc. Cars are one thing but I think I would utterly misjudge gaps in a vehicle the size of a bus. Although the little bunks in lorries are cute, plus you could listen to music or audiobooks, and motorway driving is reasonably straightforward. Bus driving where you have to interact with the public AND drive a massive vehicle on cramped city streets dodging traffic sounds the worst of all.

Barrister. Could not defend sex offenders and other monsters

You would only do that if yoo were at the criminal bar, which is also relatively low paid. DH never went near a sex offender or murderer. Also, at the criminal bar barristers tend to specialise in prosecution or defence - or did in the past.

SEN teacher - I just don’t have the patience or temperament, but bless those who can do it. Psych or care home nurse or health assistant - you’re going to see a lot of poo and other disturbing things in these two settings. I saw a psych nurse on “24 Hours in A&E” that had a patient throw boiling water over her face and chest.

RosesAndHellebores · 18/12/2025 16:21

Working for the NHS - have had headhunters approach me many times. Have always said no.

Secondary school teacher. Just no.

I think I could teach adult learners who, generally, want to be in the class and are interested in the subject. Possibly the under 8’s too. Nothing inbetween though.

Lolalovesroses · 18/12/2025 16:26

can't deal with:
Bodily fluids from people or animals.

Feet.

Teeth.

Dealing with bad mental illness. (sorry about this one)

Being out in the cold and rain.

that pretty much nails it for me too!
Also eyes and shift work.

NarwhalBuddy · 18/12/2025 16:29

In complete honesty, waitressing/hospitality server. I did do it in my teens, and I didn’t like it then. I don’t think I could do it now, my face tells a clear picture.
so I always try and make sure that servers know I’m grateful for them.

Ithinkofawittyusernamethenforgetit · 18/12/2025 16:36

Abbatoir, sewage works, any country stuff like farming (too muddy), anything with horses. I don’t think I’d be good on boats or diving, I’d hate to gut a fish.
Ex-BIL was moaning once that a friend had generous perks at work - free uniform and showers (?!) Turned out he emptied portaloos 😂

IsItWickedNotToCare · 18/12/2025 16:36

Abbatoir attendant killing loads of defenceless animals; butcher.

Being a pharmacist. Getting a degree then ending up basically putting boxes of tablets into bags all day long in a tiny pharmacy on some middle-of-nowhere parade of shops. I would be so bored.

Pretty sure there’s more to it than that!

I wouldn't mind working in a nursery, but would find it impossible to be a secondary school teacher.

Best job ever! Been doing it 30 years and no plans to retire any time soon. For me being a carer, retail of any kind, sales.

Notmyreality · 18/12/2025 16:53

I’m more interested why you think flying an aeroplane is “practically impossible”? Being a pilot is no different to any of the other jobs mentioned here.
