Did any of your husbands/partners/ sleep with a prostitute before they met you? How do you feel about it? Does it put you off them? Or is it rare? Its making me wonder if he is a sweaty old desperate pervert. Help.

i never ever grin and bear it...mostly i grin

but that doesn't mean that i'm not aware of lots of women that do...some of whom post on this site...

i'm trying to point out that this isn't as totally absolute an argument as the people that are repeatedly citing 12 year old thai sex slaves as an example seem to want it to be.

it is uncomfortable that sex is a commodity in all our lives (it sells almost everything for a start) but i would rather go to the uncomfortable place then pontificate on the total immorality of any man that chooses to pay a woman for sex. sorry.

it is lockets. and i'm questioning why a woman would outright condemn it...in a roundabout and quite confusing way!...it's late!

I have my own principles and prostitution story.

Years ago, long before children, my dh was invited to a stag night. The stag was originally a friend of mine from college, who had popped back into my life. He had become a very, very right on labour councillor in my area of SE London. We rekindled our friendship, hence my dh being invited to his stag night.

When the the big night came I waved my dh goodbye and he went off to the town hall to meet the guests - a good many of them councillors. Two hours later he was back, looking very shocked and bothered. I assumed he had got into a political row with someone. He is that sort of person. Not the case. Apparently, two prostitutes were present, and were not only stripping but taking guests away in turn somewhere upstairs, for 'much more'. My husband said he didn't fancy being part of it. This is coming from a man with a lively interest in the opposite sex who spent his teens and twenties in the Navy. I say no more.

I have to admit, I was sceptical, and I guess I will never know the truth about that evening, as I was not there. However, a year later, my councillor friend had his name blasted across the newpapers as his wife had accused him of beating her.

I assumed that was his political career over, but glancing on the council's website a few years ago, I saw he was back - as labour leader.

I haven't read all the posts, but from what I have read, I think a few of you need a reality check. I ran an escort agency for almost 5 years, in the north east of england, doing anything between 10 and 20 appointments a day, every day, 75% of the men were married.
They saw escorts for many reasons and sex wasn't always the main reason.
The woman who worked as escorts paid a commision for their jobs and earned anywhere from £500 + per week for a few hours work.
There is still some street prostitution where women are expolited and men who want to do that, but Newcastle is unique in having no street prostitution (which is why escorts here earn quite a bit maybe), but you only have to search the net to see it's a thriving business in most counties.

Why did you stop doing it Jordylass?

morningpaper · 21/01/2005 08:21

Jordylass: Not sure what you mean by 'a few of you need a reality check'. I believe that prostitution is wrong and is just one of the many ugly sides of a capitalist market, like sweatshop labour for example. Are you saying that your workers would rather sell sex than earn the equivalent sum of money for the same hours writing, or working in an office? I find that very hard to believe.

I think prostitution should be legal because it offers some protection for the workers involved. But I also think that sweatshop workers should have working rights. That doesn't mean I think the industry is good because it doesn't - it is based on the inherent lack of power that women have, financially, socially and sexually.

Furthermore, the men who were cheating on their wives were either bastards or not dealing with issues in a mature or human way. And if I was married to one of them and discovered this, I would leave him.

munnzieb · 21/01/2005 09:20

most definatly not, each to his own but I know he hasn't. And would not put up with him cheating in any form.

Caligula · 21/01/2005 09:28

Sophable, I don't think anyone has been pontificating on the total immorality of any man that chooses to pay a woman for sex - I think some of us have said that we recognise that some men do, and that we personally would not tolerate having such men as husbands and partners.

What other women choose to do, is up to them.

Nobody has accused women who aren't put off by such men of being morally lax, so I don't think those of us who hold the opposite view should be accused of morally pontificating or being unrealistic.

I hate the thought that I'm unrealistic - if that's true, then some of you have a very low opionion of men indeed.
