Pleeeese tell me what happened in the second half. I had to go to sleep as we had had a bad night the night before (IYSWIM) what happened??????

Girly · 08/01/2003 08:12

I was cringing!!!!!! That Mary, ohhhh, and Lawrence (thinks that was him name) smoking weed every chance he got, and the racist mother, compulsive viewing me thinks!

hmb · 08/01/2003 08:19

Tell me, tell me, pleeeeeese, what happened?????

I saw to the bit where they were talking about the 'wife set' rules for the second week.

gosh2 · 08/01/2003 08:30

Totally cringing, this will replace The Office for me.

Cannot believe her comments about Boot Polish, oh just awful, what a fat slob. Compulsive viewing. Really really cringing though.

Funny though that the fat slobs adopted most of the other families principles.

Bugsy · 08/01/2003 09:19

Fantastic programme, watched it completely by accident and couldn't turn it off. Amazing insight into other families lives. The most impressive character was the black mother (was her name Sonia?), really positive, strong sensible person (according to what the programme showed anyway).
Interesting that it seemed to make the white family sit up and review some of their own parenting attitudes.
Most hilarious moment was when white wife was sitting in the new house saying that she knew her husband inside out and he would not be happy with a black woman in his home, camera cuts to husband looking like the cat whose got the cream giving Sonia a big hug saying that they're going to have a great 10 days!!

Enid · 08/01/2003 09:22

I was gripped. Made me feel like the best mother alive.

Mines · 08/01/2003 09:35

Oh hmb you missed a cracker! I missed a few bits because I just had to run away but basically: the new wife rules were for Sonia that the house should be tidied of the cuddlies/posters (all to go back when she went), no swearing in the house and the family should go with her to some things she enjoyed (gym, jazz club etc).

For Dee, the only rules I caught were Lance should stop smoking weed in the house and leave disciplining the kids to her.

Cue ENORMOUS rows. I thought the 5 minutes (a long time to watch without hiding behind the sofa) barny between Dee and Lance over Lance smoking in the house was bad enough (ending with Lance pointing out to Dee that her fat was more of a health hazard than his habit) but it was definitely topped by Mary?s behaviour when she came home and found Sonia had not only removed all the soft toys in the living room but had culled most of those in her room, too. As Sonia put it ?Mary had a baby?. She basically threw a massive toddler tantrum, enlivened by some pretty foul and racist language and eventually her dad (forgotten name) lost it with her and forced her to go and apologise. Great moment.

Meanwhile Carol and dad seemed to rather enjoy having Sonia around which led to a rude shock for Dee when she got back. Just have to quote Mary here, who has just given her mum a cuddle ? Dee asks Carol for a cuddle and Carol looks mutinous so Mary says (imagine two year old whingy voice here) ?oh no, she doesn?t do cuddles for anyone except Sonia?. What a b!!!

And just when you thought it couldn?t get any more tense, there?s a sort of debriefing session at the end when each couple gets to talk about what they think of the other couple?s lives, including their children. Argggghhhhhhh. Turns out Dee?s hubby has a problem with Mary?s language for a while and when he points that out and asks Dee to help him sort it out Dee then throws a wobbler and threatens him with a divorce!

Still it ends with Dee reading the riot act to Mary, so who knows?

Real car crash tv. In years to come people will think we were barbaric to have watched this stuff.

bells2 · 08/01/2003 09:37

I was gripped too and agree with you Bugsy on the best moment!. Couldn't believe the behaviour of the 18 year old daughter, aside from having a mouth like a sewer she seemed incredibly immature. The microwave meals made me feel sick.

I thought Sonia was terrific. I did feel a bit sorry for Dee (?) when the four of them sat down and having been given a rough time by the black guy, to have her husband side with his wife must have been quite tough. Was heartedned to see though that the white family did seem to learn from their experience. And wasn't the black son adorable?

mieow · 08/01/2003 09:40

Damn I missed it!!!!!!!

PamT · 08/01/2003 09:40

hmb, when they played it their own way, Sonia completely de-cluttered the living room and the girls' bedroom. Carol was quiet about it but Mary really threw a tantrum - shouting and swearing at Sonia and refused to apologise properly. Sonia took the family to the gym and though Mary wouldn't participate, Dave and Carol enjoyed the experience. Sonia also took Dave and Carol out to see her sister singing and they all got on really well (again, Mary wouldn't go).

Lance and Dee just didn't get on, he complained about her choice of food and she really had a row about his weed smoking after she had banned it as one of her rules. She also lifted the grounding on the kids because she didn't believe in grounding. She built up a good relationship with the son and also got on quite well with the daughter but obviously hated Lance.

Lance really appreciated Sonia when she came home and got engaged to her, though I don't think anything was going to change in their house. Dee marched in, had a row with Mary and grounded her and also said that she was going to live 'uncluttered' for a while to see how she liked it and told Dave that she wanted him to start backing her up and taking more control of the kids.

I really enjoyed the programme and can't wait for next week but I did think that these couples were obviously chosen for their differences to make good viewing.

PamT · 08/01/2003 09:44

Sorry about that, Mines got it all out before me - must learn to type faster!

Tinker · 08/01/2003 09:49

I was so disappointed that Sonia agreed to marry Lance - she was far too good for him. She must have more authority in the home than him than he gave the impression of but, his 'woman's place is in the home' attitude would have really wound me up. It must have been a try on for Dee. Surely Sonia was the kind of woman to have told him to 'Get Stuffed'

OP posts:
Mines · 08/01/2003 09:52

Yeah, I couldn't get what she saw in him - especially since her children seemed to have a bit of an issue with them.

A bright enough guy, but seemed like a bit of control freak to me. And she was brilliant - I would have thought she could have her pick.

Enid · 08/01/2003 09:52

And Sonias kids obviously couldn't stand him either. She could have done better!!

Loved it!!! it put property ladder (which went out immediately before wife swap) completely in the shade. As everyone else has said, it was compulsive viewing and really good to see some changes at Dave and Dee's house in the very last scene. But I'm not sure that the changes would last.

It was amazing to see the amount of racist comments from Dee when she was trying her best to not be seen as a racist while Lance who, according to Sonia was equally racist, did not appear to make many overtly rascist comments - or was it just a case of 'clever' editing?

I can see why Lance decided to propose to Sonia but I can't understand why she accepted!

Final comment (for now anyway) was it a fair swap? Just interms of the two women's commitments, with one ahaving a full-time job and the other not appearing to have a job.
