Abena · 29/04/2008 13:57

Thankyou Franca for the translation I have just texted her (chicken!). Yes CAT me if you can. But my email is [email protected]

Brangelina · 29/04/2008 13:58

That's the way to go

I think working with obtuse men has made me lose all of my diplomacy. and to think I used to be such a lady....

Abena · 29/04/2008 14:01

Thanks Brangelina just saw yours!

PippiCalzelunghe · 29/04/2008 14:02

i thought it was very diplomatic and very english tbh...polite but to the point

francagoestohollywood · 29/04/2008 14:06

Pippi, I'm feeling bad now, I feel like those addicts who won't let their friends clean up .
Have to go now, have to go to the dry cleaner and then pick the children up from asilo.
Abena, I will email you tonight . good luck with the offer!

OP posts:
Brangelina · 29/04/2008 14:07

Of course you have to accompany it with a steely-eyed stare.

Do you think it was very English Pippi? Have I retained my stiff upper lip then? I do think I've become less polite though, I tend to say please and thank you a lot less and really notice it when I'm in the UK.

PippiCalzelunghe · 29/04/2008 14:15

the english way is to accompany it with a smile though...

Brangelina · 29/04/2008 14:20

I sometimes manage a grimace....

PippiCalzelunghe · 29/04/2008 14:26

b**y newborns and mnetting... dd2 just shat all through her nappy and two babygros into my only decent thing I've got to wear!!
it's the second time l've changed today: first time because of boob's leakage (forgot the pad!!)

Brangelina · 29/04/2008 14:35

That's what I meant when I said about the going to cinemas. DD's all exploding all penetrative poos were always when we were out and about. I once had to hose down the pushchair.

francagoestohollywood · 29/04/2008 16:01

Lol Pippi!!! Mine have never pooed that much. Ds pooed once every 3-4 days... which gave him mal di pancia, so we did lots of perette. Once mil didn't close the nappy properly and he did a 3 day poo all over dh's t shirt.

OP posts:
Rosa · 29/04/2008 19:22

Oh sh*t I have all this pooing to come again ..I had sort of forgotten about the yellow grimey stuff that gets everywhere!
Well Pippi it happened a bit earlier than we expected ...I wanted to loose a few more kilos but a bit too much wine on my birthday I think did it !! Have had a bit of a tough start of things but I must say I am now feeling more better than bad but have been just trying to do everything as normal ! ( and I still want a Uk spring roll!!)
Abena with Brangelina and Franca helping I am sure you will get the childminder to lower..Heavens for 1200 a month will be hardly worth going to work ( just guessing ) as I presume you are paying her in the black ???
Franca tell dh that you still have england in your heart and I understand you miss parts of the Uk but when you are in the Uk you miss parts of Italy !!!
DD just weed over the floor gues potty trianing not going as well as we hoped !

gio71 · 29/04/2008 19:57

Pippi! Welcome back. lovely name! lol at poo stories-you forget so quickly dont you what its like. dd2 sounds so well behaved
Franca Menorca is beautiful, which resort are u going to?
Abena I think 1200 is extortionate!! Batter her down!
Its difficult when you've lived in another country I think to know where you belong Franca. When I first lived in Italy years ago I spent a lot of time missing the UK, then when we moved back to the UK I craved Italy. Must admit that very rarely miss the UK now, got so sick of what Manchester has become that I was very ready to come back. Having said that we experienced a bit of Manc style violence yesterday! Our local GS store had a robbery at knife point when we were in there! Some poor girl had a knife held to her throat by 1 guy while the other 1 cleared out 3 tills!! DP was holding ds and we were so busy nattering we didnt realise what was going on until they had run off and people started yelling to call police and close the tills!!

Brangelina · 29/04/2008 23:12

Gio, how frightening! Were you in shock afterwards?
Oh well, at least with your lovely new mayor there will be a crackdown on all that crime apparently. Talkiing of which, I saw this in the paper today, I didn't notice any of this going on on the TV yesterday but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

You are right re the missing/not missing places. I don't miss the UK anymore, except sometimes when I see certain new things/concepts that you know are never going to make it over here. Oh, and I miss Boots of course. I think I've become a bit of an apolide now, I don't really belong 100% anywhere anymore and I'm no longer sure of where I call home.

Another is that Annalisa has been eliminated from Xfactor tonight. Emanuele il fiacco got chosen over her, how could they! I'm quite sad aren't I? I always hated realities and I've got myself sucked into watching this. DP and I have become like a couple of vecchietti in front of the telly...

gio71 · 30/04/2008 07:55

It was scarey! The strangest thing was that as we were walking in we were talking about our lovely new mayor and saying how he has won because of people's over exaggerated fear of security issues and that Rome in reality was the safest city we knew. Then the next thing we know we are caught up in an armed robbery . I did have a short period afterwards when I felt very fascista myself in my thoughts of what I would like done to people who dared to put ds within a few minutes of danger but that soon passed and am back to my normal liberal lefty self
Read that article Brange, why won't that dickhead Bossi just go away!!!! 300,000 ready to fight! What does he want - the bloody Balkans!
I miss Boots as well. But most of all I miss cheap children's clothes shops. Am bored bored bored of Oviesse and H&M is a trek out in a centro commerciale on the periferia.

Tallis · 30/04/2008 08:26

Hello all - have just found this thread courtesy of gio71 and it's lovely to "meet" everyone. I'm living in Rome for at least another few months, when dh's job may whisk us away again. Have a dd, six months old - currently teething and not sleeping.

I, too, was in a GS yesterday but the only criminal activity was by my dd,who grabs for veg as we go past and invariably ends up brandishing a spear of broccoli. Which GS was it, gio? I must remember to avoid it . I agree about Rome feeling safe. My dh did have his wallet stolen from a bar a few months back, and by the time he noticed (less than an hour), the thief had booked into a five-star hotel for the night (discovered this only much later), ordered a takeaway Chinese and bought a £700 camcorder on-line. And then a while later, a Macedonian was caught trying to get free medical care using his EU insurance card! In Skopje! Random...

Nicer weather today . COuld anyone advise me whether the shops will be open Thurs/Fri? I gather it's another public holiday.

Many tks indeed

Tallis

Tallis · 30/04/2008 08:29

Oh and I miss Boots so, so, much. And Gap/Mothercare for baby stuff. How come the pharmacies here are so duff? All those glass cases containing nothing more exciting than a couple of dusty baby dummies and XXXL ladies' incontinence pads.

Rosa · 30/04/2008 08:30

EEK Gio glad that you are ok and that you missed all the drama other wise you would have bene in a complete state..well I would. Crime is on teh increas here ok it is still petty crime but there is something daily.
I must say the Bossi fans that I have seen that come to the aqua ceremony every year seem pretty mature to me ..unless the young ones are in hiding. That article does sound pretty radical though. Have said first signs of Bossi power as he is so contro stranieri ( eu included) and we are out of here .
I tried to watch X factor but gave up ..every now and then I watch the re runs on sky but am lost sorry !!!

gio71 · 30/04/2008 09:51

Hi Tallis, glad you made it over . Shops will be mainly closed on thurs but should all be as normal Friday. The bridge holidays in Italy aren't what they were as dp has been muttering all week, full of resentment that he doesn't get Fri automatically off work as well!
GS was our local at Piazzale degli Eroi. The most expensive supermarket ever! Have decided I hate GS. Am sure it's much more expensive than the other supermarkets. Thank goodness for our lovely fruit and veg market where I can get a big bag of lovely fresh stuff for under ?5. How long have you been in Rome for?
Rosa is dd back to her normal self now?

francagoestohollywood · 30/04/2008 12:08

Gio ! How frightening!!!!! How are you feeling now? I supposed I would be really shocked, most of all by making up scary scenarios...
Again, I got quite depressed by the results of the elections in Rome, despite claims that Alemanno is indeed very moderate . I am not convinced. Rome, in the Sixties and Seventies had a history of extreme fascist movements (linked to organized crime, like la banda della Magliana), which I don't think have disappeared, and I'm afraid that they might feel more legitimized by having Alemanno as a mayor (he is also married to Pino Rauti's daughter!).

But lets change subject... and welcome Tallis!!! Tallis, I'm not sure if there is a shop in Roma, but for cheap (ish) clothes I love love love Du pareil au meme (especially for little ones). Shops should be closed tomorrow but def open on Friday.

Rosa, great that you are feeling better. Now we only have to wait for the cvs and then we can all celebrate properly .

Brangelina, I'm quite addicted to x factor as well, mainly cause I like morgan and mara maionchi (don't like simona ventura at all. what colour was her face yesterday?) and for Annalisa, that Emanuele might be a bravo ragazzo ma non sa di niente! In fact I approved of Mara's comment that he lacks erotismo.

Yes, I think in some ways I really don't know where I belong. I have processed many aspects of the UK way of life, like political correctness for instance (though I found it overpowering when I was living there). Plus I really miss parts of my life and routines there, especially when I hear ds being sad for missing his friends. And I miss Boots, obviously. Not mothercare though, our local one was quite disorganized !!

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 30/04/2008 12:11

and at Tallis' dh's wallet adventure !

OP posts:
Brangelina · 30/04/2008 12:42

WElcome Tallis, at the resourceful thief of your dh's wallet. Did he actually stay in the hotel I wonder?

I shop in Zara a lot for cheap children's clothes, or UK ebay for anything designerish (oddly enough they cost less there than on Italian ebay). I also second DPAM, although I must admit the under twos stuff is actually much nicer than the 3+ gear.

I like Morgan and la Maionchi too, imo la Ventura is just too fake. Glittery eyeshadow on tiny eyelids, nooooohorror. Plus she makes really daft and annoying comments. And why does she do her hair like that? It does nothing for her. Bitching session over, sorry. Emanuele is the male equivalent of a figa secca, whatever that may be...

Bossi is a prat, I agree. All this talk of fucili and 300.000 men, who does he thing he is, a longobardo warrior? IMO he's lost more than a few marbles and is now having "visions". The worrying thing is that someone like him is now in the govt, along with our mate Berlusca and his Duce inspired wardrobe. Have you seen thos stupid jackets he insists on wearing?

Sputnik · 30/04/2008 13:10

Hi everyone, been meaning to crash this thread for a while, as I live just outside Rome. I've been been in Italy nearly 20 years [thunk]

Anyway, just wanted to join in the general moaning about the elections. Very depressed about the Rome result, couldn't imagine it going to the right.

Also moaning about GS, I spent 168 euros in there the other day.

Oh and Tallis, H&M is good for children's clothes. There's one in the new shopping centre on the autostrada to the airport, and another at Porta di Roma, where the latest Ikea is, and there's a Zara with children's section there too.
