Property Ladder - anyone see it tonight?

Just had to post something about this programme. I watch it every week, and love the fact that Sarah is always right, and the "amateur" is always wrong. But tonight's programme was a classic - did anyone else think "personality clash"? And did anyone else think that Sarah went out of the way to show that she was right? They don't normally show people viewing the house, and they also seemed determined to show that the estate agents were concerned about the roof.

Great prog - I love it! (yet another one! )

I SO loathed the cow who was looking for a country home on tonight's prog .... when the husband mentioned a room 'for the baby', and she said 'don't push it'. I loathed her already, but that just sealed it. there's something about people who are physically unable to smile which just winds me up. Dp and I would like to see her and Kirsty on 'celebrity death match' - I know who I'd bet on.

eidsvold · 12/03/2003 07:21

i love it when I am proven right - towards the very beginning of the programme I said to my dh that this couple have a 'fantasy' idea of the country and were unwilling to face reality only to hear i think it was Phil say later in a voice over that they had a fantasy view of life in the country. They seemed to want isolation to a certain degree but then all the facilities of London on their doorstep. My husband was getting irritated with them as they could not make up their mind - one minute too noisy, the next too quite. I thought they wanted something they could show off to their friends - 'Oh we have a 14th century Jacobean stone house!! Or a converted chapel!!'

Me - I don't know how Kirsty and Phil remained so impartial ( to a certain degree) I would have been screaming - for goodness sake make up your minds!!!

I agree emsie - I was pleased they did not get the chapel - after saying - We have to have this!!! Thinking that they would get it simply cause they wanted it. I also wondered if they had gone as high on the chapel bid for what they paid for the other house, would they have gotten it??

bells2 · 12/03/2003 07:30

Oh she was such a sourpuss - don't think she smiled once. Totally agree that they had a fantasy idea of life in the country.

gosh2 · 12/03/2003 18:06

emsiewill I wondered the same thing about last week, I said to DH I would at least of asked them to have edited out any reference to the baby.

Thought Kirsty was unbelievable when she met them in the pub after they lost the baby - "Hi sorry about your bad news losing your baby BUT we may have found you a flat in Bath" - oh that makes it ok then!! Horrendous, I was just cringing. They should never have discussed the baby, and after their own personal tragedy I was very sad for them it being mentioned on TV. I do hope their new house, it was lovely, will mean a baby. I had sort of hoped they would of added something like that at the end of the programme.

Anyhow, I missed last nights. I forgot it was on DUH! I love the programme, but also love the other one at the same time with the dumb blonde woman who reminds me of a female Ben Fogle. Anyhow she is hillarious, she really states the obvious, she is so funny to watch, houses are disgusting though, no where near as nice as the ones that Kirsty and thingy go to see.

Oooops sorry didnt mean to go on this long. I'll not say another thing.

Katherine · 12/03/2003 18:29

I was very sad for the couple who lost the baby but it was a major part of their life and I don't think they should feel they have to hide it. I'm sure they were asked if they wanted any reference removed and I think good for them for staying with it. It was after all one of the major motivational factors in their descisions. Far too often miscarrriage is hushed up and not talked about. I think they were very strong and I hope they have the courage to try again soon.

Did anyone see Kirsty's coat/jacket thing at the end of last night's prog? What was that all about. At the end they said they were doing a live web chat and I was tempted to go on and ask her who choses her wardrobe because they should be shot! (OK got that off my chest now.)

Last night's couple were hillarious, the house they picked in the end left me cold, I think they were just moving to the country because it is the 'thing to do'. Yes I agree her comments about the baby made me want to reach into the TV and slap her, not of course that everyone should want a baby and has to have a baby but it was something about her attitude, she looked like she had a broom handle up her bum too!

My heart went out to the couple from Bath that lost their baby. I felt that Kirsty was a bit off hand in the pub and I felt that the woman was no longer interested in finding a city place (understandably), it seemed the last thing on her mind and personally I think the programme should have been left at that instead of dragging them out to see more properties. Perhaps it would have been more sensitive.

emsiewill · 12/03/2003 22:22

When I said the one last week was awful, I meant for the couple, but I'm sure that they wouldn't have put the progeamme out without their agreement, and I hope that Kirsty had the chance to give them her condolences in private, before the bit they showed on TV.

Did anyone see "Grand Designs" tonight. Was that man mad? Or was he just stinking rich? Very entertaining, and I really hope they go back when the house is finished so we can see how his "bird's wing" roof really turns out.

eidsvold · 13/03/2003 07:36

what about the show before that one - the revamped faking it - can't remember what it was called - were those ppl nasty and have very high opinions of themselves or was it just me? To treat the newcomer the wasy they did and to go on about the integrity of the group - I felt they lacked integrity and were at times lacking common courtesy!!

bells2 · 13/03/2003 11:22

Emsiewill, I thought Grand Designs last night made for great television. I couldn't believe that anyone could take such a risk on a roof like that and I also didn't understand why the Architect had to provide quite such a complicated design. Certainly hope we get a chance to see the finished product. Thought is wife was amazingly calm.

bossykate · 13/03/2003 12:53

bells, i saw it last night. the poor wife! and where was the money coming from? it was such a departure from their previous house and taste... i ended up rooting for the guy though, such dogged determination, the spirit of plucky british amateurism... i did turn to my husband at one point and say fervently "thank god i'm married to you and not him!" very compelling viewing.

Bugsy · 13/03/2003 15:02

Didn't you think that it resembled an office rather than a home?
I thought (and I know nothing about architecture) that the design was unnecessarily complicated. Some of the things I couldn't quite see the point of either aestheticly (sp?) or functionally.
I couldn't work out whether I thought the man was foolish to risk so much or whether I should admire his spirit of adventure.

willow2 · 13/03/2003 15:55

Gagging to see what finally happens with the Grand Design house - it will either be spectacular or a huge folly.
Re Relocation - what an old bat! And what is the point of moving to the country and only having a postage stamp for a garden? I live in SW14 but my tiny garden seems positively botanical in comparison. As for wanting something in Clapham as well but not being willing to pay for it - there really is no pleasing some people.
I'd rather this series was just people wanting a complete change of lifestyle - from city to countryside and vice versa - rather than two homes. It's so hard to relate to if you are having a hard enough time paying for just the one!

Wills · 13/03/2003 19:18

Agreed Willow2 - in terms of Relocation that is. Found it quite frustrating and as for the garden they ended up with pah!

NQWWW · 17/03/2003 11:11

I love Grand Designs and Kevin McCloud is lovely - especially when he pauses, gives you that quizzical look and says "Personally, I'd be terrified...."

This week's was definitely the best yet - don't we all love a bit of schadenfreude? I think the man was certifiable to tackle something like that with no experience. Still, I do hope he gets there in the end and that we get to see the finished product.

pupuce · 23/09/2003 20:12

Are you watching tonight ???? It appears to be a GOOD one.... SB has already warned us that the couple did it ALL wrong !

katierocket · 23/09/2003 21:23

OH MY GOD. how clueless?!! I mean I felt sorry for him when he lost his job but really they were soooo lucky - how can someone be so completely blind to reality.

SoupDragon · 23/09/2003 21:27

They were fantastic weren't they??! Yet STILL they made a profit??

katierocket · 23/09/2003 21:29

that's what I mean by so lucky. I mean when they did all that work and then had to have it all taken out!!

Tinker · 23/09/2003 22:59

SB just can't help gloating though when it starts to go wrong.

Anyone see Grand Designs last week when that couple, who seemed to be completely devoid of a sense of humour, gutted that Victorian terraced house in London? I couldn't help enjoying the moment when the flat roof leaked after importing the builders

Couple remortgaged their house to buy 2 cottages in Aberdare, Wales at auction that they'd never seen. One OK, one derelict. Planned to convert to 1 4 bed house Finger in the air budget (literally!) Mr drew the plans himself, no architect input. Eventually, survey showed every sort of rot and woodworm under the sun. No back garden, cr*p frontage on unadopted road with car saleman displaying his wares near busy main road.

Put in self-designed staircase - buildgin regs made them take it out and move it (cost £3000 I think).

Completely clueless couple, had NO idea what they were doing, Mrs project managed it herself part time so nothing was done properly or in the right order - I think they had to rip out all the rewiring once too. Mr got made redundant.

For some unbelievable reason they were bailed out by the property market going up and someone putting in an amazing offer!

Must get DSs ready for school!

Every one of these programs is the same. Person buys a house to sell on and smug presenter spends the whole program pointing out where they have gone wrong. At the end the person usually makes a profit which the smug presenter puts down to rising market values..boring!

Enid · 24/09/2003 09:52

Just underlined the fact that even complete idiots can make money out of property at the moment. Good on them.
