Property Ladder - anyone see it tonight?

Just had to post something about this programme. I watch it every week, and love the fact that Sarah is always right, and the "amateur" is always wrong. But tonight's programme was a classic - did anyone else think "personality clash"? And did anyone else think that Sarah went out of the way to show that she was right? They don't normally show people viewing the house, and they also seemed determined to show that the estate agents were concerned about the roof.

Great prog - I love it! (yet another one! )

Don't worry, she isn't. I know SB34 quite well.

Property Ladder - why DO so many people just ignore SB???? If everyone is telling you NOT to do up the cellar, why do it?

LLL - hmm, do you think their idea of renovation was just giving the place lick of paint?

SoupDragon · 05/12/2002 17:16

Oh, this week's twosome made me laugh all the way through. they didn't deserve to make any money, they were hopeless! Still, at least they were likeable, unlike See-ann.

Golden moment for me was the guy who said "we'd have to redecorate"

And no, I have no idea why they did up the cellar either. I would have cleaned it, tidied it and painted it white to brighten it but that's it.

emsiewill · 05/12/2002 17:17

I think when recruiting people for Property Ladder, they must look for ones that they think are definately going to completely ignore SB - it would be much more boring otherwise. But I can't imagine why anyone would ignore her - don't they want to make money?. If I hear her saying "X isn't thinking like a developer" and "I'm concerned that X is/isn't thinking about their budget / market ...." I may scream!

What gets me is they all ignore her and do eveything totally wrong but STILL make heaps of money! Imagine what would happen if they did as they were told....

aloha · 05/12/2002 20:30

I thought the house looked like the room set in a third-rate department store. And their actual profit - the money they made by redeveloping - was tiny. Out of £20,000, fifteen grand of that came from rising property values alone. So they got a huge £2,500 each for all that hard work.

sis · 06/12/2002 13:35

But Tinker, they were only doing the property development so that they could go shopping for stuff!! Everything they said was really irritating but they were so 'nice' I couldn't really dislike them.

Also, did anyone else see 'faking it' and want that absolute idiot to fail, fail, FAIL!? He was such a pain and must have really annoyed the producers too for them to show him being so annoying and show how much his mentors hated him too.

SoupDragon · 06/12/2002 14:48

One thing that sprang to my mind with property ladder this week was to wonder how much was staged. A work aquaintance was once in a Cutting Edge programme about having builders in and it was twisted - eg Mrs X was asked to look out the window and it was used ti impliy that she was constantly spying on the builders, Mr X was told to move about his little cardboard model of the build and it was used to imply that he was constantly fiddling with things and interfering etc.

So, when the ladies were sitting down with a drink and their shopping lists whilst friends slaved over the property, was this really what happened? I can't believe anyone could be quite as clueless as they came across! Still makes excellent TV though

PamT · 11/12/2002 12:57

What about last night's property ladder then? I really thought that this week's couple would do a good job as they had already made money before but their budgeting was ridiculous. I didn't like the cherry kitchen and the laminate flooring (either upstairs or down - wrong colours in both cases) and thought that some of the colour schemes were far from ideal, particularly the lime bathroom and orange bedroom. And I know that woman was pregnant at the end but the sarong dress thing did nothing for her 'blooming' figure. Didn't think much to SB's dress sense either - miaoooow!

Anyway, we'll see what Kirsty etc has to offer on LLL tonight!

chanelno5 · 11/12/2002 13:09

PamT - What about the toilet stuck right next to the back door? Could be interesting if a neighbour pops round unexpectedly.....................

Chinchilla · 11/12/2002 13:45

God yes, that toilet! Dh and I looked at each other in amazement when we saw it. They didn't even put proper bathroom glass in the window to give a bit of privacy. I'd would never use a toilet like that.

Also, did you see the expression on the woman's face every time SB tried to give them some advice? It was a picture!

aloha · 11/12/2002 14:04

I thought it was a bit boring tonight. And again, they made nearly all their money through rising property prices, so not really getting nearer the dream of buying outright. I did wonder who much they'd enjoy going through the renovation period with a newborn baby in the house, though.I bet they have no idea what's about to hit them!

Bozza · 11/12/2002 14:04

Actually PamT I quite liked some of the colour schemes but can see the point that they weren't very neutral. Agree very much with you comments on both their clothes - v dodgy sarong. And the toilet. When they talked about putting in a toilet and not being able to afford it I assumed they were going to put up walls too!! I mean how much can installing just a toilet itself cost? Or maybe they ran out of money for the walls...

CookieMonster · 11/12/2002 14:38

Are they ever going to have somebody on this program who manages to stick to their budget and/or follows SB's advice? Everything she says sounds so sensible and nobody ever listens to her! Maybe it wouldn't be such compelling viewing if they did ....

That downstairs loo !! Nobody in their right mind will ever use it.

bells2 · 11/12/2002 14:41

And yet again, the female half of the team seemed to absolutely loathe SB.

berries · 11/12/2002 15:24

I'd like to know how dismissive they are of a separate toyroom once the baby has arrived (and gained a few years worth of toys).

SoupDragon · 11/12/2002 15:40

What on earth were they thinking about when they stuck that toilet in the middle of the utility room?? Why not put it in the living room and be done with it? lol

I could not work out why they wouldn't take on board SBs advice about putting in sliding doors to give the option of open plan/segmented living? I'd hate a kitchen that was completely open plan to everything else - imagine the cooking smells lingering!

And you notice that it was bought by a couple with grown up children and no toys.

And I agree about both the sarong and that dress SB was wearing at the end with black boots!

CookieMonster · 18/12/2002 10:45

Anybody see it last night? Why oh why didn't he sell that flat for £120K profit??? How was he going to live (in London) on £1300 a month of rental income with no job? How was he going to finance his next property development if all his savings etc had gone into the flat? Am I missing something here?
The flat was not my cup of tea (even pre dd) but I can see that it was well done and I was surprised when it was still unlet after 6 weeks.

SoupDragon · 18/12/2002 10:55

I was screaming "Sell! Sell!" at him. It was certainly very stylish but I really didn't like the layout of the kitchen/open plan living area. It just looked like the kitchen had been stuck on a wall. Which it had, of course.

Bozza · 18/12/2002 11:01

I thought he did quite well in the end but see your point about the rental/selling aspect.

RosieT · 18/12/2002 11:03

Yes, he clearly had a wodge of cash stashed somewhere, as he didn't seem at all worried about not having let the flat for 6 months. Mind you, I was convinced the only reason he quit his job was irritation at the number of times Sarah Beany droned on about "juggling his full-time job as an investment banker..."
Nice flat, though, although I thought it slightly lacked a woman's touch. And what does one use a "steam oven" for?

megg · 18/12/2002 14:54

You could see that he was soaking in all the information about being a property developer. Thats more than you can say for the others who all thought they knew better. I'm surprised he had builders who turned up to give a quote after my experiences of them. I thought he was quite sweet, a fool for not selling the flat when he had the chance to but quite sweet. Thing is with most Asians is that they have family behind them so he's never going to be destitute is he?

Crunchie · 18/12/2002 15:04

Well if he was an investment banker, he probably gets 6 figure bonus's each year so there's no need to work. I doubt it's due to his colour
